Design the bathroom with both kids in mind.
A Jack and Jill bathroom is a term used to describe a children's bathroom that usually bridges two bedrooms. While your decorating style will largely depend on the age of the children, you can make the room creative and inviting. Whether you choose a theme or a specific color scheme, many options are available to suit the children and to blend into the overall decor of your home.
Jack and Jill
Play up the Jack and Jill theme with a bathroom designed with the story in mind. Paint the bathroom a bright shade of blue and use green accents to set the backdrop. Consider a mosaic backsplash with green and blue tiles. Frame hand drawings of Jack and Jill with rustic wooden frames. Add wooden stools for brushing teeth in a similar wood. Use empty pails to store hand towels, soap and shampoo. Add a flat square planter of grass for decoration. For younger kids, the grass should be displayed on a shelf.
Favorite Colors
For older kids, develop a color scheme including each of the children's favorite colors. For instance, if one child loves red, and the other loves blue, you can add white to give you more options. Paint the horizontal stripes of color and choose accessories like bath towels, a carpet, soap dispensers and shelving with the color scheme in mind. Consider installing a checkerboard floor with tiles in red and white or white and blue. One idea is to incorporate school or team colors into the bathroom.
Nautical Theme
Design a nautical theme for the Jack and Jill bathroom. Choose a watery palette with hues such as pale brown, light blue, yellow and white. Make a display with large seashells, starfish, beach rocks and other oceanic elements. Playful accessories with fish, dolphins, mermaids and an octopus are welcome additions to nautical theme. Choose a shower curtain with starfish on it and use an oversized sand bucket to house bath toys or towels. Another idea is to paint a small mural or to include framed watercolor art you can make with the kids.
Contemporary
For a brother and sister sharing one bathroom, design the room to suit their growing needs. When a boy and a girl are sharing the Jack and Jill, consider dividing the room in half for decorating or incorporate elements from both of them. Choose a modern graphic wallpaper to add color to the room and take the kids shopping for accessories. One idea is to paint monograms above each door to represent each kid's initials. Designate a space for each kid's personal items on a separate shelf or in a drawer.
