Make Dining Chair Slipcovers
You can change your plain dining room chairs into elegant furniture by making slipcovers for them. Or if you have older chairs that are worn or maybe they don't quite match, covering them can fix the problem without spending a lot of money. You can select a fabric to fit your budget from very expensive brocade to inexpensive cotton. By making them yourself you can dress them up to be fancy or keep them plain and simple. The best feature with slip covers is the fact that you can take them off and launder them when needed. This simple project only takes a few hours.
Instructions
1. Measure the chair from the bottom of the chair back up to the top, down to the seat and add 2 inches onto the length and 1 inch onto the width. This is the back and first piece. Measure the seat and add 1 inch onto the width and length. This is the seat and second piece. Measure all the way around the seat and legs and add 1 inch. Measure from the seat to the floor and add on an inch. This is the skirt and third piece.
2. Transfer the measurements onto brown wrapping paper to make a pattern and cut them out. Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric and cut as many pieces as you need for your number of chairs.
3. Sew the seam for the chair back. Fold the piece in half and sew up both sides with the right sides of the fabric together. Leaving the fabric inside out, sew on the seat piece with the right side of the fabric facing up. Watch that all your seams are facing the inside of the fabric.
4. Sew the skirt seam, the shorter measurement that went from the seat to the floor. It should be one big circle. Keep the right sides of the fabric together.
5. Mark the back of the chair back half way with a pin. Pin on the skirt starting at that pin around the half of the chair back, all the way around the seat and back to the starting point. Make adjustments so that it fits all the way around without being bunched up in any one area. Check to see if all the seams are still pointing towards the wrong side of the fabric.
6. Sew the skirt on. Measure to the floor and pin the hem so that the bottom is just off the floor and sew. Turn the slipcover right side in and put on the chair. Repeat for the rest of the chairs.
