Get more room to hang your clothing by building a wardrobe.
Sometimes, bedrooms closets and dressers don't provide all the storage space you need for clothing and accessories. If your closet is bursting at the seams with all your clothes or you don't even have a bedroom closet, build a simple wardrobe to hold extra garments. You don't have to be an expert builder to make a wardrobe. Make a large box out of plywood and attach a closet rod or several shelves. Hang a pretty curtain from a rod to conceal your clothes and give your wardrobe a nice touch.
Instructions
1. Cut the plywood into two pieces that measure 23 inches by 35 inches, into one piece that measures 24 inches by 35 inches, into one piece that measures 24 inches by 37 inches, into two pieces that measure 24 inches by 83 inches and into one piece that measures 37 inches by 84 inches.
2. Cut the pine boards into four pieces that each measure 35 inches.
3. Sand the posts until they're smooth.
4. Place one piece of 23-inch-by-35-inch plywood flat on the ground. Dab a line of glue along the narrow side of one 35-inch pine post and place along one long edge of the plywood. Press firmly, then repeat with another pine post on the other long side and with the remaining two pine posts and the other 23-inch-by-35-inch piece of plywood. Let the glue dry overnight.
5. Place the 24-inch-by-35-inch piece of plywood flat on the ground. Place a line of glue along one piece of 24-inch-by-83-inch plywood and butt against the 24-inch edge of the plywood. Have someone hold it in place while you hammer nails along the bottom edge of the plywood. Repeat on the other side with the other 84-inch-by-24-inch piece of plywood.
6. Dab a line of glue along the short sides of the 24-inch-by-37-inch piece. Place the piece of plywood on top of the 24-inch-by-84-inch boards, lining up the short sides. You will probably have to climb up a ladder to do so. Hammer nails along the short sides on the top of the 24-inch-by-37-inch board to secure into the sides of the wardrobe.
7. Turn the wardrobe frame so that what will be the front is face down on the floor. Have a friend help you.
8. Slide one of the shelves into the frame, about 40 inches up from the bottom of the wardrobe. Drill drywall screws, spaced about 1 foot apart, into both sides of the frame to secure the shelf in place.
9. Slide the other shelf into the frame, about 20 inches away from the bottom. Drill drywall screws, spaced about 1 foot apart, into both sides of the frame to hold the shelf in place.
10. Place the large remaining piece of plywood over top of the back of the frame, lining it up with the four edges of the frame. Drill drywall screws into the edges of the plywood, spacing them about 2 feet apart.
11. Turn the wardrobe upright and paint with the color of your choice. Let the paint dry over night.
12. Mount a tension rod inside the wardrobe, about 1 foot down from the top and in the middle of the sides. Hang the other tension rod from the front of the wardrobe, about an inch or two from the top. Use the curtain rings to attach the two curtain panels to the outer rod.
