Teak is a tropical hardwood and its resistance to water makes it the ideal material for bathroom furniture and accessories. Not only is teak beautiful, with its warm natural tones and smooth texture, but it resists molding and maintains strength with minimal care.
Teak Bathroom Furniture
Teak wood can be used for just about any bathroom furniture. You can purchase cabinets for your sink, bath mirrors framed in teak, and shelving systems to store all of your bath supplies. Also available are teak hampers and trash cans. Teak furniture has a distinctive look as it is often constructed in thin slats, lending a tropical feel to your bathroom decor.
A teak bench is the perfect solution for a large, walk-in shower as it offers a platform from which to shave your legs or simply to relax. They are even available in corner formats for smaller showers. You can also purchase teak bathtubs, which are a Danish tradition.
Teak Bathroom Accessories
Add just a little teak to your bathroom by purchasing a set of teak bathroom accessories. Some examples include teak bath mats, toothbrush holders, soap dishes, tissue box covers and towel and toilet paper holders. Teak is also used as the casing for some bathroom light fixtures.
While teak is undeniably the ideal wood for bathroom applications, it is possible to have "too much of a good thing." Incorporate a few pieces of teak furniture, or a set of matching teak accessories. If everything in your bathroom is teak, however, it becomes a bit of an overload. Also, keep in mind that teak is a relatively expensive wood, so adding a few accessories is much more budget friendly than purchasing an entire shelving system.
Caring for Teak in the Bathroom
Teak is a relatively low-maintenance material. For teak that regularly comes into contact with water, such as a teak shower stool, rinse after each use to remove any grime or shampoo and soap residue. Apply linseed oil to your teak furniture or accessories every two to three months to prevent the wood from drying out. Avoid using any other cleaning products on teak as they may stain the surface.
