White tile creates a clean look for bathrooms.
Tile is the most easily cleaned and maintained surface for bathroom floors and walls. In addition to hygiene, tiles can add to the aesthetics of your bathroom by providing interesting and attractive effects. A white tile bathroom conveys a sense of cleanliness and helps to reflect light around the room, making the room seem more inviting and spacious.
Patterns
You can add to the visual interest of a bathroom that is finished completely in white tile by creating patterns with the tiles. If you have square tiles, you are limited in your choices to a conventional horizontal array or a diamond pattern with the corners of the tiles pointing up and down. If you have rectangular tiles with a length that is twice their width, for example, 4x8 inches, you can create a weave pattern by making squares with pairs of tiles and alternating the direction of the joints between them. If you combine these tiles with 4-inch square tiles, there are a number of different patterns you can create. Anything that covers the wall will work.
Contrast
If you feel that pure white tile will create an excessively sterile look in your bathroom, accent the white tiles with another color or colors. A white surface punctuated by random black tiles will create a dynamic surface. White tiles with carefully placed tiles of red, blue and yellow will liven up the bathroom and prevent your walls and floors from looking excessively drab. White tile walls can also be complimented by brightly colored throw rugs and towels or engaging artwork. Use bathmats and curtains to add color to the room.
Floors and Walls
Tiles can be used on floors, on walls from floor to ceiling, or on walls as wainscoting, extending only about 4 feet up the walls. These possibilities provide you with a variety of combinations. For example, your bathroom could have a wooden floor with tile walls or conversely a tile floor with wooden wainscoting on the walls. For maximum cleaning ability and resistance to water, an all-tile bathroom is recommended. White grout should be used between white tiles to provide a consistent color effect.
