If you are redecorating your bedroom with new furniture, it is often difficult to know what to do with the existing furniture. Storing it in a garage or renting a storage space is not a long-term solution to the problem. Donating your bedroom furniture is an excellent way to get a tax deduction and help someone in need. Whether you donate the furniture to a charity or an individual family, the old, still-useful furniture will continue to serve its purpose.
Instructions
1. Take your bedroom furniture to a church rummage sale. Often, they have these type of sales to raise funds for benevolent services for the community. Volunteers from the church may be willing to pick up the furniture. Another idea is to speak with someone on the staff at the church. They usually know of people who have need furniture needs.
2. Check bulletin boards of local community centers, churches, banks and other public places. They may advertise fund raisers for families who are in need in the community, due to a tragic accident, illness or other circumstances. If you donate the bedroom furniture to the organization, they can arrange to sell it to help raise funds.
3. Give the bedroom furniture to a family that has recently experienced a house fire, flood or other tragedy. The gesture not only provides some of the family members with a place to sleep, it may also encourage them and give them a needed spiritual boost for a complete stranger to donate the items.
4. Look up contact information for your local Salvation Army, United Way, Goodwill, AmVets or other charitable organization in your community. They operate thrift shops and often have trucks that will come pick up the furniture, saving you from having to transport the heavy pieces. They will also provide you with a tax receipt.
5. Contact the National Furniture Bank Association at 877-373-2835. This is an organization that collects and distributes used furniture and other items to people in need.
