The ADA requires construction of accessible public restrooms.
Congress enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 to protect the civil rights of disabled citizens. Title III of the ADA requires accessible construction of public buildings and facilities. The ADA standards for accessible bathrooms apply to all new construction and significant renovations.
Toilet Stalls
Toilet stalls must be accessible by wheelchair. There must be a clear path of 30 by 48 inches approaching the stall and the stall door must provide clearance of 32 inches. If the depth of the stall is less than 60 inches, there must be a 9-inch toe clearance above the floor at the front and sides of the stall. Handrails must be installed.
Toilets
Toilets must be 17 to 19 inches high. Flush controls may be automatic or hand operated and must be no more than 44 inches from the floor. The toilet must have a minimum depth of 56 inches.
Urinals
The rim of the urinal may not be higher than 17 inches above the floor. There must be 30 by 48 inches of clear floor space approaching the urinal. Flush controls may be automatic or hand operated and must be no more than 44 inches from the floor.
Lavatories
The rim of the lavatory must be no higher than 34 inches from the floor. The lavatory must provide a knee clearance of 29 inches high and 19 inches deep. Thirty by 48 inches of
Mirrors
The bottom edge of the mirror must be no more than 40
Bathtubs
There must be a clear floor space of 30 by 48 inches approaching the tub. The tub must have with handrails, a seat and a hand-held shower unit. Faucets must be within arm's reach and operable with one hand.
Showers
Shower stalls must be a minimum of 36 by 36 inches. The shower stall must include a seat, handrails and a hand-held shower unit. The seat must be 17 to 19 inches from the floor. Faucets must be within arm's reach and operable with one hand. Curbs in showers may not be higher than ½ inch.
