Decorating a large master bedroom is not as easy as one would think. The sheer expanse of the open room is intimidating for many people--intimidating and exciting at the same time. Large rooms allow you to do more than one simple design. Whether you prefer a simplistic, all white d cor or want to go "all out" and use strong, rich shades and exotic knickknacks for guests, there is a design inspiration for you.
Break Up Large Spaces
Create low walls throughout the room to break up empty, open spaces. Use lattice or some other lightweight material so the room remains somewhat open. Silk and rice paper screens work well for this as they allow light to softly filter through. This keeps the room from taking on a closed-off appearance.
Use Color
Large rooms give an excuse to use bold colors. Try painting a single wall deep red while leaving others a shade of brown. Pink and brown complement each other as well. Experiment until you find the colors you like most.
Plants for Large Rooms
Large rooms make it possible to have an impressive collection of plants. By painting the walls light colors, you will help to reflect natural light. Plants suitable for growing indoors include ivy, pinecone bromeliad (Acanthostachys strobilacea), African violets, Adromischus (Adromischus tricolor), Mexican weeping bamboo (Otatea acuminate), breadnut (Brosimum alicastrum), and Schefflera.
Avoid Busy D cor
Do not make the mistake of having too much going on in a single room. Even large rooms feel cluttered with too many busy decorations. This makes them feel closed in a stifling. Stick to two or three main decorating ideas in your room.
Paint a Mural
Make the room seem more expansive by painting a sweeping vista mural on one wall. This makes a good inspiration focal point to help decorate the rest of the room. Instead of a vista, you can paint a seascape, underwater scene or even a dark forest with hidden animals.
Group Items
Instead of spreading decorations throughout the space, try grouping several items together. Dedicate an entire wall to photographs and attractive frames. Place a couple of chairs in the corner with a table and lamp. Add a rug and a few throw pillows for a cozy feel.
Decorate for Guests
Turn a large master bedroom into a guesthouse. Master bedrooms often have half or even full baths---guests would feel comfortable during late night bathroom breaks. Add a small kitchenette so guests can prepare simple snacks without waking the house. This is especially nice when you have long-term visitors.
