Use Krylon Spray Paint For Bathroom Cabinets

Krylon spray paint is an ideal option for refurbishing bathroom cabinets.

Cabinetry is an important part of a bathroom redesign. It helps create the basic structure of the space and provides storage to keep the place in order. When undertaking a bathroom remodel, there are two main options regarding cabinets: refurbish or replace. Replacement cabinets often consume a large chunk of a budget, making refurbishing an easy, inexpensive option ideal for cabinets that are still in good condition. A number of paint products will work in the bathroom, and Krylon brand spray paint is among them.

Benefits of Krylon

Krylon was first marketed in 1947 and was the first manufacturer of aerosol paints in the U.S. Today, the brand has several hundred colors to choose from and a variety of paint types depending on the intended use of the piece. The Krylon Fusion for Plastic works on plastic products without priming while the Krylon H20 Latex is ideal for children's furnishings. This product is intended for indoor or outdoor use and will not nick or chip, ideal for use in the bathroom. Spraying should be done outdoors whenever possible, or the room should be well ventilated. Once dried, Krylon products are all nontoxic.

Replace or Refinish

Most cabinet materials are designed to last several years and will stay looking good with very little care. Replacement is only necessary if the cabinet body is in poor condition or damaged. If cabinet faces are outdated, a moderately priced option is refacing, which replaces existing cabinet and drawer doors with new pieces. Painting is a simple option and will give the existing cabinets a whole new look. Spray paint will work well in the bathroom, is quicker than traditional paints and, as long as it's sealed properly, will withstand the additional moisture present in the bathroom.

Painting Cabinets

Whether using traditional latex paint or Krylon spray paint, preparation is an essential element of the process. A thorough cleaning is the first step and will help remove any debris or gunk from the surface. Most man-made materials do best with an ammonia-based cleaner, while wood should be wiped down with a mild soap and water, and stone requires a pH neutral cleanser. A light sanding will remove any surface stains, nicks or scratches and creates a rough texture for the primer to adhere to. All paints require that a layer of primer be laid down with a foam roller. Krylon spray paint is available in a number of colors and textures which are ideal for bathroom use. The formula of the paint will stick to just about any surface without streaking or running. Once the paint has dried, a layer or two of polyurethane should be applied to prevent scratching or other damage.

Decorative Paints

When updating an old cabinet, a new countertop will complete the look. Krylon paint offers a line of products that will help create a faux-stone countertop for a fraction of the cost. The Make it Stone! line of products creates a stone-like texture in just a few hours. These paints come in a wide range of colors and will create a semi-glossy texture ideal for most d cor. A granite look is also possible by combining three different colors in contrasting shades. The base coat is applied and then flecked with the other shades to create the characteristic look of granite. This stippling is done using a sea sponge or textured roller to achieve the pitted appearance of stone.
