Remove Beadboard From Bathroom Walls

Remove Beadboard From Bathroom Walls

Change the look of your bathroom by removing or replacing the beadboard on the walls. A bathroom presents a challenge when removing beadboard because often the bathroom is small, making the available workspace cramped and limited. In addition there may be pipes and outlets protruding through the beadboard. After removing the beadboard, refinish the bathroom walls by installing new beadboard or painting the walls.

Instructions

1. Turn off the circuit breaker to the bathroom. If you are unsure which breaker supplies power to the bathroom, test circuits in the bathroom to be sure the power is off before removing outlet covers, switch plates and beadboard.

2. Turn off water to the bathroom from a zoned shutoff valve, or turn off the water to the house from the main shutoff valve.

3. Remove the outlet covers and switch plates. Unscrew the screws on the outlet covers and switch plates with the screwdriver.

4. Disconnect or cut pipes that are protruding through the beadboard. Disconnect with the adjustable wrench at connections. Cut pipes with a pipe cutter that do not have connections.

5. Pry off trim at the top of the beadboard with a pry bar. Insert the flat side of the pry bar between the trim and the beadboard. Tap the end gently with a hammer. Push down on the pry bar to loosen the trim. Pull up and remove.

6. Pry off trim at the bottom of the beadboard with a pry bar. Insert the flat side of the pry bar between the trim and the beadboard. Tap the end gently with a hammer. Push down on the pry bar to loosen the trim. Pull up and remove.

7. Pry off beadboard. Insert the flat side of the pry bar between the wall and the beadboard. Tap the end of the pry bar gently with a hammer. Push down on the pry bar to loosen the beadboard. Pull the beadboard off the wall.
