Add durability and comfort to iron dining table chairs with upholstered seats. Recover the fabric in a few minutes on chairs with worn or dated upholstery by grabbing a few yards of fabric. Use a sturdy upholstery material with a tight weave. A twill or damask weave is a good choice. Thin fabrics, fabrics with loose weaves and knit fabrics will stretch out of shape quickly when the chairs are used.
Instructions
1. Lay a folded beach towel or thin blanket over the edge of a table to protect the table's surface when using an iron. Turn the chair upside down on the protected table edge so that the back of the chair hangs over the table's edge.
2. Unscrew the screws that hold the cushion to the chair. Lift the chair off the cushion.
3. Turn the cushion over and measure its length and width from the bottom edge over the padding to the other bottom edge. Be sure to measure across the widest part of the cushion.
4. Add 2 inches to these measurements and cut your fabric to the dimensions calculated.
5. Turn the cushion over and use a screwdriver or staple remover to remove the old fabric. If a thin layer of fabric is glued to the bottom of the cushion, pull it off to get to the staples.
6. Lay the fabric face down on the padded table and center the upside-down cushion on it.
7. Pull the fabric up over the sides of the cushion and staple it in place. Start at the center and staple half an inch from the edge of the cushion. Pull the fabric tightly while stapling. Stop an inch from the corners of the cushion.
8. Pull the fabric over the top and bottom of the cushion and staple it in the same way.
9. Fold the fabric at the corners in at a 45-degree angle. Pull it tightly and staple it down. Miter the four corners by making small pleats in the fabric between the corner and edge and stapling down these pleats. Trim any excess fabric half an inch beyond the staples.
10. Screw the cushion back onto the chair.
