Homemade Infant Costumes

Make a costume for baby's first Halloween.

Babies look adorable in anything you dress them in, so deciding on a Halloween costume for your little one should not be complicated or cost a lot of money. You will be spending plenty on fancy frocks and character costumes in years to come, so cut yourself some slack for baby's first Halloween. Keep it simple with homemade infant costumes that require only a little creativity on your part.

Choosing a Costume

Before you start making a Halloween costume for your baby, you must know what the final look should be. A baby's first Halloween costume is a chance for parents to choose classic styles before the child's interests take over. Popular costume ideas for babies include animals, food and traditional Halloween looks such as pumpkins, ghosts and skeletons. All of these costumes come together easily with a few homemade details.

Basic Pieces

The starting point for a successful homemade infant costume is a simple outfit in a solid color. This can be a footed bodysuit or sweat suit with the color dependent on the type of costume. For example, choose green clothes for a sweet pea costume, orange clothes for a lion costume or black clothes for a skeleton costume. With the basic pieces established, you can easily complete the homemade costume with creative embellishments.

Embellishing Costumes

After dressing your baby in his or her colored outfit, you can have fun adding the details that make up each costume. The embellishments can be household items or store-bought accessories. Many items can be attached with glue or tape, but you can sew them for a more substantial finish. Cover three lightweight balls in green felt and use Velcro to attach them to clothes for a peas in the pod costume. Hot glue yarn or leather trim to a baby's knit cap to turn it into a lion's mane. Transform white grosgrain ribbon into bones for a skeleton costume with iron-on adhesive. Avoid using buttons or other items that could become choking hazards if they detached from the costume.
