Make A Bohemian Bedroom

Vivid colors are often associated with bohemian style.

The term ''bohemian'' has come to be associated with free-spirited, creative types who belong to the arts community. Bohemians are generally musicians, artists and writers who eschew social convention in their behavior, attire and taste. Bohemian decorating has a similar quirkiness. Mismatched pieces, a hodge-podge of styles and a mix of patterns are hallmarks of this style, which translates well into bedroom decor.

Instructions

1. Choose unique pieces of vintage furniture from flea markets or antique stores. Look for unusual shapes, finishes and designs. Mix styles and colors as opposed to going for a matched set of end tables, headboard and dresser. A Victorian settee placed at the foot of the bed or against a wall fits in well with the bohemian look.

2. Use bold color choices. Walls painted lilac, orange or brown make a bohemian statement. Hang textured wallpaper on a portion of a wall as a focal point then trim it out with painted molding. Use bed linens that contrast with the wall color. Hang colorful artwork, tapestries or even a sari on the wall. A neutral color scheme is not part the bohemian decorating style.

3. Mix patterns. Fold a stack of multicolored quilts at the foot of the bed or over the settee. Pile throw pillows at the head of the bed. Drape silk scarves over lampshades. Lay a large patterned area rug, such as an Abusson, Oriental or kilim, on the floor, or choose a modern geometric rug for an unexpected twist.

4. Spread clutter. The bohemian bedroom is the opposite of minimal. Place accessories such as candlesticks, novelty lamps, crystal perfume bottles, delicate hinged boxes and animal statues on end tables and dressers. Stack patterned hat boxes on the floor for storage. Place a wire bust or mannequin, dressed in vintage clothes, in the corner.

5. Add sparkle. Mirrors and the wall, a piece of glamorous Art Deco mirrored furniture, mirrored sconces or handheld mirrors are good options. Keep the reflective theme going with mercury glass votives or vases. Hang a crystal chandelier in front of the window and drape it with colorful beads or crystals. Use sequined fabric or beaded trim on throw pillows.
