Dining Room Wall Decorating Ideas

Paint, furniture and mirrors are only a few options for decorating your dining room walls.

You've completed the painstaking process of choosing the perfect dining table, chairs, centerpiece, dishes and other accessories only to discover something just isn't right--the blank walls. Decorate your dining room walls with traditional wall decor or unexpected items, as long as they tie into the color scheme or theme of the room.

Color

Paint the largest, most visible room in the dining room in a bright or bold color to create a focal point. The bold wall color can frame neutral or ordinary wall decor and still make an impact. Use the accent wall to tie together all of the colors throughout your dining room and enhance the mood and style of the room's decor. Paint a mural or design directly onto the wall, such as an outdoor scene or stripes, or use wallpaper to introduce colors and patterns.

Warm colors such as red, orange and yellow can stimulate your appetite and are common dining room colors. Cooler tones, such as charcoal or blue, work for contemporary dining rooms. Sprinkle in a warm hue to make the space more inviting and interesting.

Furniture

Large furniture, such as a hutch or china cabinet, can fill the space of a large wall and give you room for storage and display. Other furniture can be installed into the wall and become a part of your wall decor, such as an arrangement of floating shelves. Larger shelves can serve as a buffet or hold massive pieces of art, while smaller shelves can be arranged in an interesting way and hold smaller collections of bright, attractive accessories, such as vases, bowls and candles.

Wall Decor

Hang a mirror in a small dining room to reflect light and make the room feel larger. Large mirrors can fill expansive wall space in larger dining rooms without taking away from the decor. A decorative frame or interesting shape can add interest. For example, a group of four vertical wavy mirrors will add interest and fill in the blank space of the wall.

Ornate pictures, art or arrangements are another traditional option. Match the style and color palette of the painting or picture arrangement to that of your dining room. Common images include rolling hills, fruit, pots and wineries. Black-and-white picture arrangements can be striking against a bold wall in a contemporary dining room.

The Unexpected

Large wrought-iron sculptures, spray-painted branches or other three-dimensional objects can hang on the wall for an unusual look. Sconces can add charm to the room and flank iron pieces or a mirror. Hang a decorative wine rack to display your finest wine or a collection of decorative wine bottles.
