Pick A Bedroom Color Scheme

Color schemes determine the mood and feel of a bedroom.

The colors you choose for your interior dramatically effect the mood and feel of your home. Some colors command attention, while others promote relaxation. You want to choose the right color scheme for your bedroom because it's usually a place where tranquility and rejuvenation take place.

Instructions

1. Select a mood and tone for your bedroom. Gold and yellow are warm and inviting colors you can pair with red or green for a cozy look. White is airy and feels light. Dark, bold colors---such as midnight blue and mocha---add richness to your color scheme. Reddish tones will energize your bedroom.

2. Consider flooring when deciding on a color scheme. If you have dark floors and furniture, you may want to go with lighter walls to brighten the space. With lighter-colored floors and furniture, you can go with darker shades, which will make your room feel cozier. Remember to choose rugs with colors that complement the scheme you're using.

3. Select colors from an item you'll be using in the bedroom. This could be a painting, chair, pillow or rug. Find two or three colors and include these as the basis for your palette. Since you sleep and wake up in this room, select colors you enjoy looking at late at night and early in the morning. Avoid colors you won't enjoy seeing first thing in the morning.

4. Hang a window treatment that matches the mood you're trying to capture. The type of treatment you're putting in your bedroom is just as important as its color. If you're going for a romantic vibe, for instance, you may want to try a floral pattern. If you want light and airy, choose a lightweight fabric that moves with the breeze. For a relaxed look, go with tabbed panels or even bamboo shades.

5. Add contrasting color in small doses. If you want to add a bright color such as red or yellow to liven up your bedroom, for example, do it with smaller objects. Vases, pillows and throw blankets are nice objects to incorporate into your scheme for a refreshing change that isn't overwhelming.
