Bedroom Paint Scheme Ideas

A bedroom color scheme involves pairing complementary colors.

Choosing a color scheme for a bedroom can depend on several factors. While bedrooms are a place for sleep and relaxation, they are also an opportunity to express aesthetic ideals in a private space in the home. Color schemes are largely based on personal preference, but some general guidelines about pairing complementing colors can help point you in the right direction once you enter the paint store. Following a rule of two can help you make educated color choices.

Complementary Colors

Red and turquoise are popular complementary colors.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing color scheme ideas is to use two complementary colors. Complementary colors appear opposite one another on the color wheel: red and teal, blue and yellow, and green and magenta are all complementary color pairs. One of the most modern pairings is red and turquoise, but keep in mind that dark reds can make a room feel smaller. Choose one main wall color and use the complementary color on an adjacent wall or on a recessed portion of a wall, like a bay window. The complementary color can even be used with a modern geometric stencil in an artistic design.

Colors of the Same Hue

Use colors of the same hue to create alternating vertical stripes.

A hue refers to the gradation of a color. For instance, the color green can be more blue and closer to a teal shade, or it can be more yellow and closer to a lime shade. Choosing two hues of the same color can be a subtle, modern way to make a room interesting. Multiple hues of green or blue can be aesthetically interesting but still calming. Select three walls to paint in an icy gray blue and then one accent wall to paint a sky or robin's egg blue. Use molding as a chair rail half way up the wall, and paint above the molding a light lime color and below the molding a chartreuse. Two colors of similar hue also work well as alternating thick vertical stripes around the room.

Lights and Darks

Adding black paint to a color is called shading, and adding white to a color is called tinting. If you decide on one color for a bedroom, add visual interest by creating both a tint and a shade of the main color. Tints and shades are especially effective in the brown family. Shades and tints of brown are sophisticated, modern, adaptable, and calming. Choose a light beige as the main wall color, and add a vertical or horizontal chocolate stripe, or select three walls to paint a deep brown and paint the wall that the bed is on a lighter, sandier tan. Shades and tints can also work for other colors as well, particularly yellow, green, and blue.
