Decorate A Romantic Bedroom In An Apartment

Ethnic textiles create an exotic mood.

Of all the rooms in your apartment, the bedroom should reflect your innermost self. For romantic bedroom decor in a small space, save the rococo details for accessories and textiles. If your apartment bedroom has special architectural features, highlight them with furnishings and accessories that have elegant details.

Instructions

1. Update your bedroom with a new color scheme. If your landlord allows you to paint, you can paint walls in a warm tone, which lends the space intimacy. Try burgundy or red for drama. If you want your bedroom to appear larger, keep paint colors lighter and cooler, such as a shabby chic palette of icy pink, lavender, cornflower blue or cream. Pale yellow or gold lends a romantic bedroom regal elegance. If you cannot paint your walls, add these colors by hanging fabric on the walls or covering canvases with fabric and placing the canvases on the walls.

2. Furnish your bedroom with stylish but functional pieces. Most apartment bedrooms do not afford the space or flexibility for large, ornamental furnishings. Instead, consider a low platform bed with a wooden frame for a clean, modern look to use as a base for ornate bedding. For a romantic bohemian look, consider a vintage bed frame in scrolled wrought iron. An upholstered headboard softens the space. Achieve a similar effect by covering a thin mattress in plush fabric. A simple dresser or armoire provides romantic style with antique drawer pulls, crystal knobs or a hand-painted trim.

3. Soften surfaces with different types of textiles. In windows, lighter, translucent fabric allows natural light to filter inside. Darker fabrics with details such as gold stamping, embroidery, beading, small mirrored trim or fringe add romantic flourish to throw pillows, bedspreads, floor cushions, wall hangings or canopies. Embellish textiles with pom-pom trim, fringe and tassels for an ornamental look.

4. Hang artwork that gives the space a romantic, tranquil feeling. Landscape paintings have classic style, while abstract paintings in saturated hues have a contemporary feeling. Black and white photographs and movie stills give your apartment bedroom Old World elegance. Coordinate simple gallery-style frames in black lacquer or stainless steel for a streamlined look.

5. Illuminate your apartment bedroom with multiple light sources. Although you may be limited in your choice of built-in fixtures, supplementing your rental's lighting dramatically changes the mood of the room. Flank a large painting with wall sconces or small lamps sitting on floating shelves. Floor lamps with elaborate, curving bases have a feminine style. A chandelier or a bouquet of bright paper lanterns over the bed gives the space sculptural detail.
