Decorate A Countrystyle Bedroom

Country bedrooms feature warm, soft elements with muted colors.

American country decorating style is all about down-to-earth comfort and warmth. The lines are simple, the colors are muted but rich and the decorating elements are sparse but comforting. If you want your bedroom to feel cozy without a lot of clutter, a country-style makeover is probably your best bet.

Instructions

1. Paint your furniture to match your new country style. Paint your bedframe French blue or warm cream. Coat chairs and dressers in rust reds, warm browns or buttery yellows. You may not need to paint wood furniture as long as it's real wood and not laminate.

2. Cover your bed in a large patchwork quilt. Find a quilt that hangs down to the floor to eliminate the need for a bed skirt. Cream-colored sheets and pillow shams complement the patchwork quilt without being too obviously country.

3. Scatter twined rugs over the floor. These rugs are made from fabric and twine; they're usually oval and come in rich, muted colors. Place one on either side of the bed, one in front of the door and one under each chair.

4. Fold and place country-style blankets over the backs of chairs. Place another on your footboard. Pin lightweight blankets to the walls for insulation and softness.

5. Decorate the tops of bureaus and windowsills with ceramic pieces and candles. Place a pitcher and bowl in a sunny window. Cluster a few candles on a ceramic plate and set it on your nightstand.

6. Replace gilt or metal picture frames with wooden or cast iron frames. Simply transfer your pictures and prints over to the new frames to make them country-style.
