Fairies are a favorite in little girls' rooms.
Finding the design direction in a child's bedroom is as simple as honing in on his interests. Once you have a theme in mind, decorating is matter of creating a space that reflects what's important to the child.
Sports-Related Theme
Opt for bedding in colors that reflect the child's favorite sports team. Rather than a headboard, build a wall of open "lockers" around the bed, giving the child plenty of room to display his toys and memorabilia. Wallpaper murals are available for just about every sport and can serve as the centerpiece of the room's decor. Wall decals are large, make a visual impact, and can be quite inexpensive. Choose an area rug that anchors the room and ties the theme and colors together.
Fairytale Inspired
The bed is often the focal point in a fairytale-inspired room. Paint the headboard white and dress the bedding up in pastels, with plenty of texture in the way of throw pillows and sheer fabric suspended from the ceiling as a canopy. Stencils, wall murals and framed art are all strong design choices for a room that celebrates fairytales.
Storage Considerations
Use a full-size locker as wardrobe storage, simple tackle boxes on shelves to organize smaller treasures, or a "fireman's ladder" against the wall with hooks attached to hold hats and jackets. Place her "princess bed" on risers, leaving space for storage beneath and place a freshly painted old steamer trunk at the foot of her bed to stow her toys. Paint bright fireflies on her wall and screw a simple hook into each, giving her somewhere special to hang her hats and necklaces.
