Small bedrooms benefit from window features, such as skylights.
Tiny bedrooms can make you feel trapped and afraid. Opening up the space, however, is possible when you put in a bit of planning and contemplate style. Picking a style for the bedroom is often the ideal place to start. A loft look, a cottage motif or a cozy-attic nook style transform a mediocre room into one that appears purposefully intimate.
Maximize Light
Furnish the bedroom with larger windows, if the windows are small. Windows add two main features to a small bedroom: light and a focal point or "exit" point. For rooms that feel claustrophobic, adding a window -- or increasing the size of a window -- will let in more light. Add the window on the side of the room that receives the most hours of direct sunlight, if possible. Skylights are another option; they let light flood in throughout the day and capture moonlight at night.
Stripes
While it comes down to personal aesthetic taste, adding broad stripe patterns to a small bedroom opens it up, according to a Good Housekeeping feature on master bedroom design. Wide stripes, ideally in a light color such as beige, cream or light blue, add dimension and warmth. Complement the bedroom with wide-striped wallpaper, repainting or a striped bedspread. Pair the bedspread with striped pillows.
Multi-Functional Furniture
If the room has space for only a few pieces of furniture, ensure that each one is multifunctional. For example, choose a bed or daybed with drawer storage underneath. For coffee tables, select one with storage underneath, pull-out cabinets and a glass top for storing books or CDs underneath. Bookshelves do not have to take up a whole block of wall -- install shelves, like scales, on the wall to hold books and albums instead of a boxy cube.
Mirrors
Fill an entire wall with floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Or, add a wall of picture-frame size mirrors that punch space into a wall, or walls. A wardrobe with mirrored doors is a also an ideal way to handle two situations: It gives the bedroom tenant a full-sized mirror, and you do not have to take up wall space you can use for artwork or other furniture pieces.
Window Dressing
If adding a new window is not an option, design features around the window that accentuate it, such as colorful curtains or drapes, instead of blinds. Attractive cloths, borders or valances -- ornamental drapery hung across a top edge of the window -- attract the eye, promoting a refreshing openness in a small bedroom.
