Italian Bedroom Ideas

An Italian-style bedroom uses design elements popular in Italy.

Romeo and Juliet, the canals of Venice, vast Tuscan vineyards and exquisite, colorful cuisine all come to mind when thinking about Italy. Get inspired by the vivd landscape and Italian culture---and bring the nuances to your bedroom by decorating in themes depicting Italian d cor.

Colors

Homes in Tuscany are painted with colors inspired by nature. Earth tones predominate the Tuscan palate---in conjunction with bright, bold accent colors such as Mediterranean turquoise, poppy red, the vibrant green of unripe olives or the gold hue of olive oil. For your bedroom walls choose a ripe pear color or the cream of an aged fresco. Create depth in the walls by texturing with plaster to resemble the nuances of mural frescoes.

Draperies

In Italian homes, draperies are used to soften the harsh texture of wood or metal. Italian-style fabrics include damasks in oversized scroll or floral patterns. Other materials favored by Italian designers include tapestry designs and muted silks or cottons with small prints or striped designs. These fabrics may be embellished with fringe or tassels made of silk thread.

Furnishings

Italy has an ancient tradition of furniture making. Many modern furniture companies have been in business since the early 1900s. While modern Italian furniture is contemporary, the traditional medium for making furniture in Italy is solid wood. Some furniture was decorated with decoupage in a style that is referred to as arte povera, or poor man's art. Other furnishings were hand carved with embellishments. Both antiques and modern reproductions are finished by hand. Classic pieces like a laquered wardrobe or a rococo four poster bed will make a room look as if it came from Venice.

Objects

Objects of art or accent pieces can help tie a room together and identify it as distinctly Italian. Sculptures, busts, vases and bass relief objects look as if they were taken from ruins that date back to the Roman period. Elements from nature such as dried grapevines or silk roses can feel as if you've stepped into a sprawling vineyard in Tuscany. You can add Italian words to a wall to express a sentiment such as, "Buona Sera".
