Make Bedroom Slippers

Make your own bedroom slippers from an old sweater.

You don't have to spend a lot of money on overpriced retail slippers. Making your own is a great craft project and an economical way to use an old, but comfortable, sweater.

Instructions

1. Set a plain white sheet of paper on a flat surface such as the floor. Place one foot on top of the paper and with a pencil trace the outline of your foot onto the paper. Use the pencil to smooth out the toe outline.

2. Draw a smaller oval inside of the slipper outline for the foot opening. Look at slippers you already have for this foot opening.

3. Create a sew outline by drawing small dots 1/4-inch from the slipper outline. This line allows for extra material around the slipper outline for the sewing process.

4. Place another sheet of plain white paper underneath the slipper outline paper, and use scissors to cut the slipper pattern from both pieces of paper. Use a razor blade to cut the foot hole out of one slipper pattern paper.

5. Use straight pins to attach both slipper outlines to an old sweater. Cut the outline out of the sweater. Measure the width of the foot opening for the strap piece. Cut one small rectangular strap for the slipper strap that overlaps the foot for better hold. Place the solid sweater piece on a flat surface. Place the sweater piece containing the foot hole on top of the solid sweater piece.

6. Sew the two pieces together along the extra 1/4 inch of space with a 2-by-2-millimeter-long zigzag sewing machine stitch. Reinforce the slipper edges by folding over the 1/4-inch edge and sewing with a 7-by-2-millimeter-long zigzag stitch.

7. Give the slipper a finished look by crocheting the rough edges. If you are not skilled at crocheting, use a strong thread and needle to clean the edges and help the material not to fray. Insert the foot into the slipper and take note of where you want to place the strap. Sew the small strap onto each side of the slipper hole with needle and thread.

8. Repeat the entire process for the other foot.
