A bedroom should look inviting if it's well designed.
All separate pieces of bedroom furniture do not necessarily have to match. While a formal master bedroom requires a very unified look, most bedrooms do not. In fact, it can be enjoyable to mix and match various types of furnishings. A few rules do apply, however, since a bedroom should look organized and provide comfortable space for sleeping. For example, the furnishings should not overpower the room size. Every bedroom needs balance in terms of furniture placement, too. Designing the space with an eclectic mix to create harmony requires adding pieces carefully.

1. Plan the room around sleeping space. Measure the bedroom to decide the mattress size, such as king or queen. Sketch the bed in various positions. Place it on an angle across one corner of the room, for example. Draw the headboard space to fit flat against various walls. Add night tables in the design if there is sufficient wall space beside the headboard. Make sure the scale of all furnishings match in size and bulkiness, so that no piece overpowers another.
2. Purchase main pieces of furniture to balance each other. Sketch the style of headboard to use first. Draw a more ornate wooden headboard if the bedroom has 9-foot ceilings or vaulted ceilings. Plan to buy chunkier night tables with post legs to flank a 6-foot tall carved wooden headboard. Design a heavy dresser and chest to go with this type of headboard. Use a brass headboard with simple spindles for a small, formal room. Select a dresser and chest to fit a brass headboard that are more sleek or delicate in design.
3. Design complementary finishes of main pieces. Plan to buy to match in tone, as one option, so that artwork and bedding can be more colorful. Select odd pieces and paint them all black for a unified designer look. Use this method for creating a nice room with odd tables, bookcases and wooden chairs. Add leopard-print table scarves and curtains for a unique decor. Use a brass headboard with an oak dresser to create neutral gold tones, for example, if you plan to display colorful quilts in the room.
4. Plan contrasting furniture finishes for special artistic appeal. Position a fancy dresser, for example, to stand out as a work of art on its own. Select an ornate oak dresser to go with a no-frills black headboard and chest of similar scale or size. Use artwork and decorative items in the room to harmonize with the black furnishings. Use black and white painted pieces together if they have similar lines. Choose a mingled black-and-white bedspread to tie the contrasting colors together.
5. Create unique night stands. Use glass or wooden tables covered with fabric, for example. Keep the night stands as formal as the bed and headboard; for instance, cover a small round table with a green velvet cloth and place a crystal lamp on it. Don't use a casual lamp appropriate for a child's room, or it will cheapen the overall look. Attach a large shelf trimmed in crown molding directly to the wall to serve as a night table, if the floor space is limited beside the bed.
