Designing a walk-in custom closet for your master bedroom will take time, careful planning and most likely some compromise, particularly if the space is shared. Walk-in closets are obviously used for clothes storage; however, many people use them for other purposes as well, especially if they are large enough to serve as a small room. Before you get started, consider your lifestyle to determine if the closet needs to have other functions besides storing your clothes.
Instructions
1. Measure the closet (if it already exists) or determine the space that is available to build your walk-in closet. Building a brand new walk-in closet will require extra steps relating to constructing the room, finishing the walls, adding flooring, and wiring the room for electricity. Contact a professional for help in these areas if you are building a new closet space.
2. Make a list of what you need in a closet. This will include how much space you need for hanging clothing and other items, as well as how many drawers and shelves you will need to store shoes, bags and bulky items. Come up with another list for things you'd like to include in your closet, such as a flat panel TV or a full-length mirror.
3. Determine your budget. You may be able to do some things yourself, such as installing the shelving, which can save you money.
4. Plan out the space. Delegate full-length space for hanging longer items such as coats or dresses. Double your hanging space by installing an upper and lower bar, or by adding drawers beneath a higher bar or shelves beneath a lower bar. Make room in your design for drawers, shoe shelves, linen storage (if needed), and shelves for hand bags, hats, and bulky folded items like sweaters.
5. Install proper lighting in the closet. For larger walk-in closets, consider multiple lights, floor lights, or track lighting so you can easily see all of the items you'll need when getting dressed.
6. Add any extras such as a chair, sofa or ottoman for sitting if your space allows this and you desire it. Install a full-length mirror or set up a free-standing mirror.
