Dining room decoration is limited by space.
While all homes tend to have certain rooms, like kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms, a separate dining room is often a bonus. If you are moving into a home or apartment with a separate dining room, you may not have any furniture to put in the space. The options you have when it comes to decorating a dining room with furniture depends on the size of the space and other nearby features of your home.
Instructions
1. Measure the dining room. Take a measurement across one wall and then along the adjacent wall to get the length and width of a room. If the room is circular, measure across the center of the room from one side to the other to get the diameter.
2. Draw a rough sketch of the dining room on a piece of paper. Mark the room measurements onto the sketch to help you plan the space.
3. Pick out a table for the space, making sure that it fits easily in the room as indicated by the measurements on your sketch. Not all of the dining tables available will work in your space. A large dining room may accommodate a table that seats 12, while a smaller room may only accommodate a table for four or six. Circular spaces also generally work better with circular tables. If the dining room walls are wood, or if the dining room has an open plan with the kitchen, select a wood that doesn't clash with the wood you can see from the dining area. It's generally best to get the same type of wood as used in the cabinetry and other visible furnishings.
4. When you position the table in the dining room, make sure that enough space is left around the table that all of the chairs can be easily accessed. Once you have placed the table, draw it in its place on the sketch, so that you can have a portable reference of the space remaining.
5. Add any type of additional furniture that you would like. House Beautiful suggests bookshelves and accent tables that can be decorated with books, photos and other items. Typical dining room d cor, such as china cabinets and hutches, are also good. Before buying any piece of furniture, take measurements of the furniture in the store and make sure that it fits into the open space left on your sketch.
6. Do not over-furnish the dining room. Make sure that the table remains the focal point of the room, and don't make it difficult to get around the table or serve food.
