Install A Bathroom Tub Faucet

An eyecatching faucet can update your bathroom in an afternoon.

Installing a new faucet in a tub is a quick way to update your bath. With all the options available in shape, size and finish, the most difficult part of the process may be choosing the faucet kit. Each faucet install slightly differently, so follow manufacturer instructions, but the basic process is fairly standard among faucet types.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water to the bathtub.

2. Pop the center caps off the old faucet handles and take out the screw in the middle with the appropriate screwdriver. Pull off the handles and remove the escutcheon rings and retaining nuts.

3. Unscrew the old spout to remove it. It should just slide out, though it could have retaining screws or caulking around it that you can slice through with a utility knife.

4. Remove your tub's access panel.

5. Cut through the pipe with a hacksaw leaving enough room to re-install your fittings.

6. Sand the end of a copper pipe. Apply flux with the included brush. There may be as many as four pipes feeding into the new connector for the valve of a single-handle faucet. Put the connector on, heat it with a torch to re-sweat it, and then solder the valve. For plastic pipe, cut the pipe, clean it, and glue the connectors on.

7. Install the retaining nuts into where the handles go. Put on the escutcheon ring, this may also be called a cover plate.

8. Put on the handle or handles, tighten screws, put on the pop caps.

9. Install downspout/spigot. Turn until it's in place. Apply a bead of silicone caulk if necessary.

10. Turn water back on. Check for leaks.
