Gather comfortably once again with new chair padding.
If you fill your dining room routinely with good food, friends and family, then the seats of your dining room chairs may be suffering more wear and tear than you, or your guests, would like to feel. Do not give up entertaining. Instead, switch out the old seat padding and covers for something new that will serve you well for many future meals.
Instructions
1. Turn the chair over so that the legs are facing upward. Unscrew the sections of wood that hold the chair seat in place with a screwdriver. Set the screws aside.
2. Pull the seat away from the chair frame with your hands or with the assistance of a screwdriver with a flat edge. Pull out staples and tacks with a pair or pliers.
3. Remove the fabric covering and the foam cushion. Discard the old cushion.
4. Select new foam cushions that will provide support and comfort. Use the seat bottom as a template, drawing your cutting lines on the foam with a marker. Cut thin foam to size with sharp scissors. Slice through foam that is too thick for scissors with a sharp knife. Spray the wood seat and the foam with adhesive and press the foam onto the seat.
5. Measure the area of the seat with the cushion in place. Purchase material for the seat with an additional three to four inches of length and width to wrap around the bottom of the seat. Cut the material to size with scissors.
6. Lay the fabric out on a flat surface with the side of the fabric that will show on the finished chair facing down. Center the foam and chair seat on top of the fabric with the foam against the fabric.
7. Pull on one side of the fabric up and around to the bottom the seat. Select a place roughly in the center along the length of the fabric and staple the fabric to the chair with a stapler. Gently smooth the fabric. Pull the fabric across from the side that you stapled and staple it at its center point. Staple the fabric at the center of the the final two sides, checking that the fabric is not wrinkled as you proceed.
8. Fold the fabric near one corner up onto the seat and hold in place with your hand. Fold the fabric on the adjacent edge to overlap the first section. Staple into place. Follow the same technique to complete the other three corners. Add staples along all of the sides to hold the fabric into place securely.
9. Screw the seat to the chair using the original screws. Cut away excess fabric with scissors. Turn your chair over and you're ready for guests.
