Paint A Dining Room Table A Dark Brown

Paint a dining table brown for a rich, elegant look.

Purchasing an inexpensive dining room table at a flea market, garage sale or thrift store can save you money, although you may have to put in some sweat equity to achieve a designer look. Adding a coat of rich brown paint to a dining room table that has seen better days will give it a rich, elegant look and an instant facelift. By doing the preparation work and painting yourself, you will save money and gain a dining table that looks as though it belongs on a showroom floor.

Instructions

1. Fill in any holes in your dining table with wood filler and a putty knife. Let the filler dry. Sand down your entire table with 100-grit sandpaper to remove any bumps, gouges and dings from the table. Sand until the entire surface that you will be painting is smooth.

2. Vacuum the sandpaper dust from the table. Take your time with this step to remove as much dust as you can. Put some water in the bucket and get the lint-free rags damp. Wipe down the entire sanded surface with the damp rags and let dry.

3. Pour a small amount of the oil-based primer into a paint tray. Apply a thin layer of primer to the sanded surface with a paint brush. Allow the primer to dry completely.

4. Pour a small amount of the brown paint into a clean paint tray. Apply a very thin layer of the paint to your table with a clean paint brush. Paint slowly and with the grain of the wood to avoid leaving drip marks or paint brush lines. Allow this layer to dry completely.

5. Sand the dry layer of paint with your fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Vacuum the sand dust and wipe down with a damp rag. Let it dry completely. Apply more layers of paint until you achieve the level of paint coverage you desire. Sand, vacuum and wipe down with a damp rag between each layer of paint. Let each layer dry completely.

6. Pour the water-based polyurethane into a clean paint tray. Use a clean paint brush to apply a coat of the polyurethane to your painted table in long, even strokes. The polyurethane adds a high-gloss shine and increases the life of your paint job and the durability of your finish. Let dry completely and apply another coat or two if necessary.
