Vintage Bedroom Decoration Ideas

Vintage Bedroom Decoration Ideas

People who favor vintage style often love it because of its old-world, cozy feel. The term "vintage" refers to a style that is elegantly cluttered, full of bright colors and old-style patterns. Inspirations for vintage style come from the late 1930s through the 1940s. Some people may like this style because it reminds them of times gone by or of the home of a beloved grandparent. One of the best places to use vintage motifs is in the bedroom. The bedroom should be a place of relaxation and comfort, full of things that make the occupant feel good about the space. Vintage style is designed to do just that.

Furniture

Choose dark-wood furniture, such as walnut, mahogany or cherry. In addition to these woods being popular in the '40s, their color makes them seem older than lighter woods. A sleigh-style bed or a bed with short, carved posts and lots of curves is perfect. Nightstands should be tall and narrow with scrolled paint on the drawers or curved drawer fronts. Try to find a dresser to match.

Paint plain dark wood furniture with gold scrollwork, large clusters of pink and white cabbage roses, or both.

If you like metal finishes, choose gold or bronze. Brushed finishes are fine, but shiny metals are more time-period accurate. Choose headboards and footboards with curled or interweaving metal rods. White or light-colored wicker furniture matches these metal tones.

Accents

Find a large, oval mirror with a frame that matches the rest of your furniture. Hang it above the dresser to create a vanity. On top of the dresser, lay down one or two lace doilies of any style or color as long as the color matches the room.

Look for glass perfume bottles, and pour your favorite body spray into them. Paint the back of your favorite brush and comb with silver paint and clear glaze. Place your makeup and other toiletries in round, floral-patterned hat boxes and little wicker baskets with lids.

Choose lamps with dark wood or gold-tone scrolled bases. Porcelain lamps with floral or pastel enamel patterns on them were also popular. Choose off-white, smooth shades.

Find vases with similar patterns and fill them with silk daisies and roses. Hang up black-and-white photos in unmatched frames of different shapes, sizes and finishes. Cluster them together in lieu of posters or portraits.

Fabrics

Find fabrics in bright, cool colors. Mint green, candy pink, sky blue and cool white are among the most popular colors. Floral, checked and paisley patterns are all appropriate. Choose patterned bed linens and use the colors in the linens as a color scheme for the room. Try not to mix patterns.

You can also use a floral comforter and decorate the rest of the room, including the sheets, in solids unless you can find curtains or accent pillows that match the main pattern almost exactly.

Use a down-filled comforter and soft cotton sheets. Put cushions on chair seats and on their backs if you wish. Stack two or three accent pillows on the bed against the headboard; edge the cases and shams in lace.
