Think outside of the box when it comes to bedroom walls.
Many decorators pay attention to furniture, lighting and linens without giving much thought to walls. Break away from traditional colors and coverings and let your walls reflect your design sense and personality. Your bedroom is a good place to start. Experiment in your personal sanctuary with options that will breathing life into your bedroom--starting with the walls.
Instructions
1. Use paint in new ways. Instead of a traditional white or neutral, go colorful. Red walls are exciting. Green walls convey a sense of calm. Yellow walls make you feel happy. And remember that strong wall colors can be nicely offset with the colors in your curtains and bedding. Try a combination of colors on your walls: white with taupe, maroon with gray, blue with white. Or paint different shades of the same color, going from bright tangerine to pale orange, or from navy blue to sky blue. Or, instead of one color on the walls, try patterns, stripes, polka dots, designs and motifs.
2. Put up a mural. A mural is simply a large picture painted on the wall. In your bedroom, this accent can have quite an impact. Find a do-it-yourself mural kit or a local artist to paint it for you. Feature whatever scene or view catches your fancy: a forest scene with trees and forest animals; sandcastles on the beach; a city skyline or an underwater seascape featuring whales, fish and coral. Your imagination is your only limitation.
3. Faux finish your walls. This technique is used to make the surface look like another material. Imitate the fibers of grasses, the refined look of marble, the wood of trees or a texture such as stucco or plaster. The paints and materials to create these effects are readily available in any home improvement store. And if your walls have any imperfections, faux finish hides them well. Once faux finishing is complete, balance the look with muted, understated bedroom accents.
