Finally, you are free and you will be moving to your own one bedroom apartment. Although you will get your freedom by renting your own apartment, your space will be very limited. To best furnish your one bedroom apartment, you must learn to maximize the little bit of space that you have and equip your apartment with only the bare essentials.
Furniture
Start with the absolutely necessary items. Pick up a sofa for the living area, preferably one with a fold-out mattress so that guests will have a sleeping area. Add a coffee table and additional seating if there is space. Mount your TV on the wall to save space. A mattress, box spring and headboard are essential for your bedroom furnishings. Add a floating shelf beside the bed to place an alarm clock or reading book without taking up vital floor space. Add a small dresser to the room, or tuck one in the closet. Hang up as many clothes in the closet as possible to avoid having to get too large of a clothing storage unit. You will not have space for a dining room table, but set up a small area for eating, such as stools by the kitchen counter or a TV tray. Add a small console table or desk in the room with the most available square footage for an area to pay bills and complete work. Place a mirror in the bathroom or bedroom.
Kitchen Items
Purchase enough tableware to feed the highest number of people you expect to invite, and the necessary tools. If you plan on dining alone, your needs will probably differ than if you expect to have frequent dinner parties. For single eating, purchase a microwave, set of plates, cups, flatware, ice trays, baking dishes to cook frozen meals, and a can opener. For more extensive cooking needs, purchase serving ware, pitchers, stemware, platters, cutting board, cutting knives, a blender, electric mixer, cookie sheets, pots and pans, and a large set of baking dishes.
Toiletries and Cleaning Supplies
Stock up on toiletries. Purchase shampoo, conditioner, soap, razors, toothbrush, toothpaste and toilet paper. Add routine cleaning supplies like a mop, broom, trash bags, laundry soap, dish soap, bathroom cleaner and washcloths. Also purchase a plunger and light bulbs.
Accessories
Add decorative accessories if desired, but try not to clutter the small space with unnecessary items. Some options include art, picture frames, shelving, small storage units and bath accessories. A couple of small table lamps will provide extra lighting. Sheer curtains will help add a sense of home to the area while letting as much natural light in as possible, making the space feel more open. Add items to the wall to free up as much floor space as possible, such as a hanging DVD rack. Get a set of coordinating towels to hang in your bathroom. You also need a shower rod and curtain. Add rugs to the bathroom, living room and bedroom if desired.
