Position Downlights For A Dining Table

Some dining room chandeliers have built-in downlights.

Downlights are used at dining room tables to help illuminate the setting and the food. They are also used to add additional lighting for moving around the exterior of the table during a dinner party. There are two types of downlights in many dining rooms. The first is a downlight that is built into the chandelier. This light is often centered over the centerpiece and operated by a switch that is separate from the main chandelier lights. The second type refers to recessed can lights mounted in fixed positions in the ceiling. These can lights are not designed to be directional.

Instructions

1. Choose a chandelier with a built-in downlight if you enjoy frequent dinner parties and you like to show off beautiful table floral arrangements. The center downlight will direct light specifically at the center of the table and transform the centerpiece into a display that looks like art.

2. Position small fixed-style recessed lights over every two side chairs around the perimeter of larger dining rooms. If your room is wider than 14 feet, it is helpful to have table illuminating downlights set up on a dimmer so that you can light the table to the degree you want. These small fixtures should be at least 4 feet apart along the length of the table.

3. Position larger fixed-style recessed lights behind the chair of diners so that the light will span to cover the table setting and the pathway behind the chair of the diner. These lights would be 4 to 6 feet apart along the length of the table and spaced from 2 to 3 diners apart. You would not use small and larger lights together, but instead use one or the other.
