Paint A Bedroom Gray

A blue-toned gray can be a calming color.

Gray is an eclectic and pretty color for bedroom walls, and depending on the rest of your décor it can be funky or sophisticated. If you are looking to paint your bedroom gray, learn some easy tips and steps to doing so, in order to give your bedroom a chic style and a fun look.

Instructions

1. Pick out a shade of gray that you like, depending on your décor and color scheme. If you have a small room, stick with a lighter shade of gray, as dark shades can make small rooms even smaller. Most grays go generally well with cool tones, so you may want to focus your color scheme on that. If you have warm tones for the rest of your décor, stick with a gray that has warm orange or red tints to it.

2. Grab a few color swatches and take them home to compare against your wall. Some stores even offer small, inexpensive, sample tins of paint, so that you can actually see the color dried on your wall. Once you've decided on the exact gray you want head back to your hardware store and purchase a large can of it.

3. Move all furniture and wall hangings from your bedroom. Apply painter's tape to all borders, light switches and plugs in your room. This will prevent paint from spattering onto borders and ceiling. Also lay out a large tarp to cover your bedroom floor and prevent carpet or hardwood floor stains.

4. Pour primer into a paint tray and paint all four walls with primer using a roller brush. Wash roller brush immediately after use if you want to use if to paint your walls gray later on. Re-using a brush is an effective way to help you save a little bit of money during the re-decorating process. Allow the primer to dry, about eight hours for latex primer and at least a day for oil primer.

5. Pour gray paint into your tray and begin painting walls with a rolling brush. You want to paint the majority of your walls leaving about a half a foot of space bare just at the trims. Even though you've taped off your trims and borders, a rolling brush is harder to control in these areas, so you'll want to use a different brush later on.

6. Use a small, two-inch wide, bristled brush and go around the entire room painting walls up to the trim and borders. A smaller brush is easier to control in these tight spots. If you should somehow get paint on borders or trim, have a warm wash cloth ready to wipe it away immediately before it sets.

7. Wait about four to six hours for the paint to dry and decide if you like the shade and color. If you still want it a bit darker, repeat these steps to see if an extra coat will give you the desired effect. Again wait for the second coat to dry. Once you've reached your desired shade and the paint has dried, remove all painter's tape and move furniture back into room. Now enjoy your newly painted gray bedroom walls.
