Eco Friendly Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Potted plants naturally freshen and purify the home.

Decorating a bedroom with an eco-friendly touch is healthier for your family and for the environment. Enhance the room with nature-inspired colors and decor elements, such as plants and flowers. Using non-toxic items, organic fabrics and sustainable furniture pieces will infuse the space with a calm and relaxing vibe. Sustainable furniture materials, such as bamboo and organic cotton, are renewable resources. Products made of recycled materials, such as wood and plastic, are also sustainable.

Walls and Floors

Traditional paints can produce harmful emissions. Volatile organic compounds evaporate, releasing chemicals into the air. Choose to update the bedroom with low-VOC or no-VOC paint, which is available in the same colors as conventional paint. Splash the walls with a sage green, sunny yellow or relaxing lavender color to promote the feeling of relaxation and harmony. If you are replacing the room's flooring, go with eco-friendly carpet constructed with fabric made out of recycled water bottles, or flooring made with reclaimed wood or a renewable resource such as bamboo and natural cork. Add a pop of color to the space using vibrantly hued tile constructed of recycled glass.

Furnishings

Refresh current bedroom furniture instead of buying new items. Don't send good items to the landfill if you can update them with a little creativity. Cover a gouged wooden desk or chair with a few coats of non-toxic paint for an instant upgrade. Repurpose stacked luggage into a creative nightstand or turn an old wooden door into a rustic headboard for a bed. If you are crafty, make your own bed pillows and chair cushions using old curtains, quilts or fabric scraps. Transform an antique storage chest into a comfortable end-of-the-bed seat using foam padding and decorative material. Use potted plants as natural air purifiers.

Bedding

For a healthy, eco-friendly sleeping space, use bedding made with all-natural fibers, such as bamboo and cotton, rather than synthetic materials. Choose an organic cotton sheet set and comforter. Growers don't use pesticides or chemical fertilizers on organic cotton. You don't have to sacrifice comfort for sustainability, as organic bedding is available in luxurious high thread counts and silky finishes similar to their conventional counterparts. Since you spend a lot of time in your bed, pick eco-friendly pieces such as a mattress free of polyurethane foam and fire retardants. Opt for a mattress made of latex foam instead. Look for a bed frame and headboard made of bamboo, which is a renewable resource, rather than tropical hardwoods harvested from rain forests.
