Teen Bedroom Ideas For Decorating

For teenagers, their bedrooms are their castles, a place for quiet retreat and privacy. However, they often want their bedrooms to reflect their personal style as well. Parents can create an ideal space for teenagers by consulting with them and determining their preferences and setting up spaces that allow them to feel their room is their own.

Styles

Before embarking on a teenage bedroom design, brainstorm possible style preferences. While not everything in the bedroom needs to adhere to a style or a theme, keeping one in mind helps streamline the design process. Some popular styles for teenage bedroom include contemporary, bohemian, earthy, beach cottage, crafty and sporty. You can adjust current furnishings to reflect these styles with a simple paint job, stenciled embellishment, accent wall or the addition of thematic bedding and wall art.

Spaces

Teenagers often require their bedrooms to serve multiple purposes. The sleeping area should be relatively clutter-free, with a shelf or stand for storing current reading material and music. Ideally, there should be a separate study area, near a window or with a good desk lamp or pendant light. This area should be near an outlet as well, to accommodate a computer, if necessary. A tall bookshelf, which can be narrow or wide, is ideal for stowing reference books, textbooks, extra notebooks and baskets or buckets with necessary school supplies. Some teenagers also like a lounging or exercise area, which can be as simple as a corner with a throw rug and some cool patterned floor cushions.

Accessories

Accessories in a teenager's bedroom should reflect their style and preferences. Allow teenagers to display collections on bookshelves, or add a free-floating shelf or corner shelf to show off little items. Teenagers can create a scrapbook-style collage of photographs, ticket stubs, invitations and souvenirs to decorate a bulletin board or door. They should display or hang their favorite school projects, art projects, awards or trophies as well. Take advantage of vertical space by using a ladder-like shelf for showing off accessories, or attach a shallow shelf along the length of a wall for propping up pictures, collectible toys and other memorabilia.
