Proper Height For A Picture Above A Dining Room Table

Proper Height for a Picture Above a Dining Room Table

Hanging a picture above the dining room table adds a significant focal point to the room and sets the mood for the dining experience. Museum and art galleries use various formulas for hanging art and most commonly placing the center of the artwork at an average eye level. Homeowners doing their own decorating enjoy more freedom. For best results, consider expert advice, and check the picture's view from both standing and sitting positions.

General Guidelines

Various venues for viewing art hang pictures 57 to 63 inches from the floor to the center of the piece, which approximates an average eye-level. The most important factor is to hang the picture where it looks its best and provides the greatest viewing pleasure. In the dining room, you might want to hang the picture a few inches lower than an average eye level to improve the view for those appreciating the picture while seated at the table.

Things to Think About

Consider the scale of the location. For example, to hang a painting above a sideboard, choose a height that will balance the open space between the sideboard and the ceiling. In a room with a high ceiling, have an assistant hold the painting so the center of it is at 63 inches (5-foot 3-inches) and stand back to check the effect. If it is hung too low over the sideboard, it will appear crowded. Smaller artworks should usually be hung lower than average, where perhaps the center of the picture is at 55 inches or lower.

Making the Decision

Have an assistant hold the picture at lower and higher positions while you view it from the dining room entrance, then directly across from the picture, then from a position seated at the dining table. Unless the room has a high ceiling, focus on positions a few inches below eye level. Select a position where the picture views well from both standing and seated positions.
