Different Designs Of Bedrooms For Teenagers

Compromise for a bedroom you and your teen can live with.

Designing a bedroom for your teenager requires compromise. You'll need to teach your teen pick practical items that stick within a budget. Let your teenager choose her own design style so you both have a room you can be happy with.

Teen Bedroom Designs

When designing a teen bedroom, think about your teenager's favorite movies, books, colors or sports teams. You can even base the design off a favorite drink bottle. Since teens' tastes change, decorate with paint. Keep more expensive items such as furniture and flooring neutral. You can even create a headboard by painting cherry branches over the bed. Make the room pop with an aqua background and pink bedding.

Think about function as well as style when decorating a room for a teen. Turn a twin bed into a day bed by adding a large bolster pillow on the back. You can even create a headboard that runs the entire side of the bed. This keeps the room functional but also creates a space where friends can gather to play video games or talk. Consider a theme and color palette that will grow with your child. Bright colors can seem more grown up. Pastels may be more suited for a child's room. Modern themes focus on clean lines and neutral colors for a sophisticated teen space that you might even like.

Your teen may want a black bedroom but you might be worried about the lack of light. You can both get what you want by painting half of the wall with chalkboard paint. This also serves as a message board for your teen's friends. Keep the space sophisticated with cool blue accents and black and white artwork.

Teen Bedroom Accents

Use accent pieces as the focal point for your teenager's bedroom design. This allows you to inexpensively change the room by switching out one or two pieces. Give your teen's room an exotic feel by sewing lightweight chiffon fabric into a bed canopy. Stick to an all white canopy for a tropical room or use patches of colors for a bright space. This will take the place of a bed frame to save money.

Create a large bulletin board where your teen can pin pictures of friends, postcards or celebrity photos. Use cork coasters to create a bulletin board for a modern room. The Better Homes and Gardens website recommends putting forty coasters together. Paint half of the coasters in bright colors. Acrylic paint will add color. Choose several different colors such as orange, silver and lime green. You may need to use several coats of paint for an even finish. Glue one painted coaster on top of an unpainted coaster for stability. Photo mounting stickers allow you to make a cluster of coasters on the wall for a dramatic effect. You can also disperse the dots throughout the room for a polka dot wall.
