Make An Indonesian Inspired Bedroom

Indonesian-style bedrooms are often earth toned and dimly lit.

Indonesia is a tropical Southeast Asian country known for its variety of plants and wildlife, as well as its beaches filled with colorful fish. In contrast to the region's vibrant flora and fauna, Indonesian furniture tends to be earth-toned, highlighting the natural beauty of local teak and acacia wood. Authentic Indonesian d cor is often finely crafted, as seen in intricate geometric and floral inspired wood carvings and rugs.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls an earth tone such as cream, tan or reddish brown, depending on how dark you want the room. Paint trim and ceilings a contrasting earth-toned color, such as a darker brown to frame the walls. As an alternative to paint, consider replacing some of the bedroom walls with wood paneling.

2. Purchase good-quality wood furniture and accents, preferably from Indonesia or another South Asian country. Indonesian wood furniture and accents tend to be earth toned with decorative accents such as metal handles on bureaus and intricate geometric carvings on headboards, table legs, chair backs lamps and mirror frames. Beds and sofas tend to lie close to the ground.

3. Lay a large Indonesian or Indonesian-inspired rug over the floor. Choose a simple sisal rope rug or a more decorative, naturally-dyed Oriental rug with a floral pattern.

4. Accessorize sparingly with artwork that evokes Indonesian culture, such as framed photos of Indonesian scenes, figures of Buddha or Hindu gods and Oriental vases. These accents can add a touch of color without detracting from the natural look of the room.

5. Add a few tropical plants or an aquarium to the room to add colors and life reminiscent of Indonesia's natural landscape.

6. Light the room with recess lighting, sconces other accent lights. The dim lighting will highlight the natural beauty of the d cor. Use electrical lighting sparingly in favor of oil lamps and candles.
