Put Two In One Bedroom

Two people in one room is possible with some ingenuity.

Sharing a room can be difficult. Kids, college dorm-mates and even adults find themselves having to share a room with another person. Each person has their own likes and dislikes and habits. Often, these personality traits don't mesh with the other person sharing the room. Roommates must learn to get passed these differences and find a common ground to make sharing a room work. There are several options for organizing the space so each person has an adequate amount of personal space and storage.

Instructions

1. Set up a bunk bed. A bunk bed is a space saver; it allows you to utilize the same square footage for two separate beds. For a larger child, invest in a bunk bed with a full-sized bed at the bottom and at a twin size at the top.

2. Store clothing, shoes, toys and other things in storage containers and place them under the bed. This is especially useful for toys that are not often used or for clothes that are out of season.

3. Divide the closet and drawer space evenly to prevent one person from crowding out the other. Make a rule, that once someone has used up there designated storage space, they will not be allowed to invade the other person's space.

4. Decorate the walls and select furniture to accommodate both people's taste. This can be difficult, if the two people have completely different styles. But you can divide the room in two and designate one wall for each person to decorate.

5. Separate the room into two or three zones. Designate a zone for each person's personal items, and if room allows, designate a common zone for the television, computer or shared items.

6. Remove duplicate and unnecessary items. There is no need to have two televisions, two mini fridges, two garbage cans or two of the same toys. This crowds the limited space. Any toys, clothes and books that remain unused should be donated or discarded.

7. Create a chore and rule list. Each person requires a certain amount of privacy and consideration. For example, "After 9 o'clock, lights out." Even if one person is still awake, that person has to agree to turn off the television and lights at a certain time. Write rules about personal responsibility and cleaning up, and create a chore list that covers vacuuming, dusting, washing the bedding and other cleaning.
