The 1950's, with its poodle skirts, denim pants, and drive-in theaters, may be a bygone era, but a 50's themed party can be a fun way to evoke that vibrant time in America. Convert your home into a 1950's-style diner or malt shop, or your backyard into a drive-in movie theater.
Malt Shop or Diner
Decorate your house like the malt shops or diners that were popular in the 1950's. You can get black-and-white checkered plastic to attach to your walls or floor and red checkered tablecloths to go over your tables. Serve your guests hamburgers and fries. Have your guests wear popular 50's fashions like poodle skirts or denim jackets. If you don't have a jukebox, you can play popular 50's tunes on your computer or off a CD player to simulate the atmosphere of the era.
Hula Hoop Contest
Hula hoops were a popular toy in the 1950's. Get some hoops from a local toy store or discount shop, put on some 50's music, and have all your guests try to keep the hoops going. Give gag prizes to winners, such as a pack of bazooka gum.
Drive-In Movie
If you have a large backyard, convert it into a drive-in movie theater for your 50's era party. Set up a large screen in the yard and choose a popular movie from the 1950's to show on a projector. Use one of your back windows as the concession stand. Place a large sign listing the items for "sale", such as buttered popcorn and candy and let guests ask for them at the concession stand window. If you do not want your guests driving on your lawn, you can simulate the drive-in experience by placing towels on the grass for people to sit on.
