Paint A Bedroom Red

The color red adds spice to the walls of a bedroom.

Whether named after a food, such as Habanero Chile, Picante, Juicy Passionfruit, Cherry Tomato or whether given less exotic names, such as Ruby Shade and Enticing Red, it is clear that the color red is a fresh choice to paint a bedroom. It is essential to follow some traditional steps to ensure the red color applies evenly and dries to a satisfying finish.

Instructions

1. As with any paint project, certain steps must be taken ahead of time to prepare the room for paint. Repair damage to the drywall by patching any holes, cracks or other problem areas. Allow the patches to dry for at least 24 hours before sanding them smooth with fine-grade sandpaper. Wipe the wall with either a homemade mixture to clean the dust from the walls or a commercially prepared product before applying primer.

2. Masking the room with blue painters tape is a necessary step for clean cut ins and an acceptable finish. Apply the tape around the top of the walls, bottom of the walls and around trim, including windows and doors.

Red colors that are highly saturated require tinted primer to ensure a smooth, even application. Ask the paint salesperson with whom you are working to guide you to a pre-tinted primer or one that can be tinted to your requirements for your red bedroom. If you are painting over an old color that is also highly saturated, it is important to make sure you have the properly tinted primer so the red color will apply evenly onto the primer after it has dried over the old paint color.

Cut in, applying small but even amounts of tinted primer around the edges of the trim, top and bottom of the walls.

3. Primer the walls with the remaining tinted primer. Evenly coat the walls, allowing them to dry for 24 hours before moving on to the next step.

4. Cut in around the trim work, top and bottom of the walls with the red paint.

5. Apply 2 to 3 even coats of red paint to the remainder of the walls of the bedroom. Start by making an "M" shape with the paint roller or a "W" if you prefer. Roll the paint in a zig-zag pattern over the M or W shape. Finally, roll the paint from top to bottom, applying even pressure. Allow the paint to dry fully before hanging up artwork or curtain rods.
