Handicap Restroom Requirements

Grab bars or handrails placed around the toilet help prevent falls.

Public handicap restrooms designed for adults and children must adhere to guidelines set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This applies to handicap facilities installed inside of standard public restrooms. The ADA allows companies to use technologies and designs outside of the guidelines as long as the designs provide the same benefits or better.

Appliances

Handicap users benefit from appliances placed in the restroom, in the order of use. This prevents the user from having to travel far. Appliances include soap dispensers, paper towels or hand dryers, feminine hygiene dispensers, and trash containers. Sensor-operated appliances, such as hand dryers, can encourage hygiene.

Doors

Businesses must install a door to the toilet stall so it has a minimum of 42 inches clearance space between the door and any barrier from the latch side. Doors can have a pull bar mounted on the inside, so those who are in wheelchairs can close the stall doors more easily.

If disabled people must push against the door with their wheelchair to enter the restroom, install kickplates along the length of the door width, about 2 inches from the bottom of the door, up to 16 inches. Install door closers also, which have a delayed action, allowing the disabled enough time to get into the restroom.

Grab Bars

Disabled people depend on grab bars or handrails to keep their balance. The space between the wall and grab bar must have a 1 1/2-inch clearance. This allows enough room to hold the bar and prevents arms from slipping into the opening. Grab bars must have the ability to resist 250 lbs. in weight. Grab bars cannot move or rotate--they must remain sturdy.

Install grab bars 33 to 36 inches above the floor. For children, install grab bars 18 to 27 inches above the floor. Wide toilet stalls require rear grab bars, at least 54 inches long. Narrow toilet stalls must have grab bars on both sides of the stall. Install 42-inch long side grab bars within 12 inches from the rear wall.

A shower room that is 30 by 60 inches must have grab bars around the wall. Also, install shower room grab bars between 33 and 36 inches above the floor.

Mirrors

Mirrors must hang at least 74 inches high at the top edge, if shared by wheelchair users and walking people. All people, including the disabled and children, can use full-length mirrors. Full-length mirrors need clear floor space of 30 by 48 inches to provide enough room for approach.

In children's stalls, hang mirrors with the bottom edge up to 34 inches above the floor.

Sinks

Sinks must have rims no higher than 34 inches above the floor and have a depth of 6 1/2 inches or less. The room underneath the sinks must have a width of 30 inches, a height of 24 inches and a depth of 19 inches. The approach to the sinks must have at least 30 by 48 inches of floor space, extending up to 19 inches under the sink. Keep all exposed pipes under the sink insulated, and remove any sharp surfaces underneath that could cause injury.

For children, install sinks no higher than 31 inches from the floor, with a knee clearance of 24 inches.

Acceptable faucet designs include the push, touch, electronically controlled and lever-operated types.

Toilets

Install the top of the toilet seat 17 to 19 inches above the floor. These measurements apply to wall-hung toilets also. The floor space to the toilet must have a minimum width of 30 inches.

For children ages 3 and 4, install the toilet seat 11 to 12 inches above the floor. For ages 5 through 8, 12 to 15 inches from the floor, and, for ages 9 through 12, 15 to 17 inches above the floor.

The required height of urinals must have the elongated rim 17 inches above the floor maximum. This height applies to wall-hung or stall-type urinals.

Toilet Stalls

The standard, single-occupant stall must have a minimum width of 60 inches, with the center line 18 inches from the side wall and the door swinging into the stall. This 5-foot circle must be free of obstacles to allow enough room to move the wheelchair around.

Ideas For A Male Bedroom

A well-designed bedroom is functional and attractive.

A bachelor or young man needs a suave, sophisticated room to call his own. A well-designed male bedroom offers comfort and sanctuary to its owner and is inviting to guests. Keeping the bedroom clean and free of clutter is the best way to improve the room, but the right color palette and bedding choices are also important.

Storage Options

A well-designed closet provides most of the storage needed to keep clothing, sports gear and other items off of the floor. The experts at BobVila.com recommend installing a closet organization system that fits your specific needs and wardrobe. For example, an older bachelor with a variety of high-quality suits will need a different closet system than a young man who wears nothing but T-shirts. If the space in your closet is not sufficient, purchase a few under-the-bed storage containers for more out-of-sight storage.

Color Palette

Strong, masculine colors create the mood a man's bedroom needs. Darker tones of warm brown, gray-toned greens and blue-toned grays may seem dark but produce a very serious atmosphere in any bedroom, say the experts at House Beautiful. A minimalist modern look is also very popular for a man's bedroom, but care must be taken not to make the room too sterile. Off-white paint colors with yellow or red tones keep the room warm, and stainless steel furniture should be limited in bedrooms with predominantly white color schemes.

High-Quality Linens

Soft, neutral-toned, high thread count bed linens are a crucial part of the male bedroom. Even young men will appreciate the comfort of better quality sheets and comforters. The Apartment Therapy website recommends a striped comforter in a color that coordinates with the wall color, or a bright white comforter paired with sheets featuring a bold graphic print.

Wall Art

Posters of rock stars or athletes may be appropriate for younger boys, but young men and adults require better wall art. The experts at AskMen.com say to keep any other colors in the room in mind while choosing art, such as dark furniture or bright red bedding. Framed prints of artwork containing some of the room's existing colors tie the design of the room together. Black and white prints of geometric landscapes add an elegant but masculine touch, or use large-scale posters of your favorite abstract art.

Decorate A Formal Dining Area

Formal dining areas can be elegant.

A separate dining area can call for a formal look. Formal dining rooms provide elegant settings for eating as well as entertaining. It doesn't need to take a lot of money to decorate your dining area this way. Focus on types of color, fabric and furniture accessory style to set a formal tone.

Instructions

1. Select a color scheme for your dining room. If it connects with the kitchen or living room, the scheme should work with those color palettes. Paint your dining room walls with colors that have a sophisticated feel. Darker colors, such as cocoa, royal blue or dark green, will have a more intimate and dramatic effect. Golden tones are pleasing in formal dining rooms because they exude warmth.

2. Create a formal mood in your dining room with lavish textures. Add a touch of class with patterned and textured wallpaper, a painted faux finish or stenciled border.

3. Hang rich fabrics for window treatments. Look for shimmery finishes such as silk or taffeta. Velvet and heavy brocade fabrics increase the feeling of formality in the room.

4. Decorate with antiques and reproduction pieces. They usually display ornate and interesting details that enhance the elegant tone of the room.

5. Hang a chandelier for a dramatic effect. Choose one that fits the size of your room and ceiling height. Low ceilings need smaller chandeliers, while you can hang larger, more elaborate chandeliers from tall ceilings.

Arrange Furniture In Combined Bedroom And Dining Room Areas

You can create separate areas even in a wide open space.

When you live in a small space, it's not unusual to have rooms that do double or triple duty. In a studio or loft apartment, for example, the only separate room may be the bathroom, while the rest of your accommodations consist of one combined living area. When you have a combined bedroom and dining area, you may be at a loss as to create two distinct spaces that are clearly differentiated according to their purpose.

Instructions

1. Mark off the area that is devoted to your dining space by placing masking tape on the floor. Do the same for your bedroom space. This will allow you to place your furnishings in distinct areas and create dedicated spaces. Remove the masking tape once your furnishings are in place.

2. Select furnishing colors and styles that complement each other when designing a combined areas. If your furnishings do not match, purchase slipcovers, pillows and blankets in complementary colors to unify the two areas. Refinish furniture that clashes so that the colors blend well.

3. Repeat a similar theme in both areas by choosing lamps, decorative items and and artwork that flow from one space to another. Create a look of unity by following a specific theme. Shabby chic, country, monochromatic, contemporary or ethnic decor are all possibilities for your combined space.

4. Create a division between your dining and bedroom areas. An adjustable or removable division works well when you want your space open at times and divided at others. A folding screen, rolling wall divider or curtain on a rod or track are all options that can be adjusted as you desire. When you know that you want your space to have a permanent division, opt for a fixed wall divider, dresser, bookcase, sideboard or china cabinet to create the feeling of a separate space.

5. Lay area rugs and throw rugs to differentiate between the two spaces. Choose a large area rug for your dining area, and situate it under the table where you eat. Opt for several small throw rugs in your bedroom area, or choose runner-style rugs on either side of your bed.

Arrange Bedroom Furniture With An Extra Dresser

Arrange furniture so all elements are accessible.

No matter what the size of your bedroom, an extra dresser often causes issues with placement along with all of the other bedroom furniture. Both dressers need to be easily accessible so that you are able to stand comfortably in front of them. The ability to open the drawers fully is also essential. Drawing a floor plan of the bedroom allows you to play with the placement without actually moving around heavy dressers and other substantial bedroom furniture.

Instructions

1. Measure your bedroom to figure out exactly how much space is available. Measure your furniture pieces so you know how much room each piece will take up.

2. Draw a scale drawing of the room, including the door, closet, windows and other fixtures that will affect furniture placement. Draw in the furniture on paper using the measurements you took of the individual pieces.

3. Position the furniture pieces from the largest to the smallest. This usually means placing the bed first, which often goes opposite the door.

4. Place one of the dressers on the wall opposite the bed if you have the space. This is particularly useful if you plan to place a TV on top of the dresser for viewing from bed.

5. Position the second dresser on the same or another wall, depending on the amount of space you have available. One option is to place the dressers on either side of a window to balance the placement within the room.

6. Stand in front of the dressers to ensure they are easy to access in their current placement. Try opening the drawers and getting items out to ensure the space isn't too cramped. Focus on functionality first and the appearance of the room second.

Make Vinegar Bathroom Cleaner

Keep your bathroom clean with vinegar.

Staying within a budget is not always easy. Some expenses, though, such as cleaning supplies, can be cut significantly if you make your own cleaners at home. Vinegar, for example, is an excellent household cleaner, and it is available in large bottles at a more economic per ounce cost than smaller bottles. Making cleaners with vinegar for your bathroom also requires little effort.

Instructions

1. Pour pure white vinegar in a spray bottle and use it as a general cleaner to clean most areas of your bathroom, including the sink, tiles, shower door and tub. After spraying, use a rag to wipe the areas clean. You can also spray it on grout, let it soak in for several minutes and use a scrub brush or old toothbrush to remove mildew.

2. Add 1 tsp. salt per 1 cup white vinegar to the spray bottle and shake until the salt dissolves. This, too, makes a suitable bathroom cleaner, according to the Michigan State University Extension Office.

3. Mix 1 cup white vinegar and 1/2 cup baking soda in a plastic bag, such as one used to store food, making sure to mix the two over the tub in case of spills. Then tie it to the shower head so the shower head is soaking in the cleaning solution for an hour or so. This removes soap scum, according to VinegarTips.com.

4. Combine white vinegar and baking soda to make a paste. Use this cleaner to get rid of soap scum and hard water stains in your tub, shower and sink.

The Best Ways To Improve Bathroom Ventilation

Although bathrooms are designed to be bright and pleasant areas of privacy, problems can occur when ventilation is poor. Poor ventilation can cause a bad smell, but more importantly, it can be a source of mold, mildew and other issues brought on by an over-abundance of moisture and humidity. Fortunately, you can improve the ventilation in most bathrooms by taking advantage of their surroundings.

Open the Window

Bathrooms in many homes have windows, which can improve ventilation and prevent stale air and humidity from becoming a source of mold and mildew. If the window looks out onto a public walkway or yard, use blinds or a curtain to cover the area. Avoid curtains made from fabric since the organic material in the fabric can be affected by the moisture and heat passing through it. Instead, use vertical blinds or a vinyl curtain to maintain privacy. If using venetian blinds, open them at a downward angle that allows for ventilation but keeps onlookers from gaining an inside view.

Use the Vent Fan

Many bathrooms in apartment complexes do not feature a window. Still, many of these bathrooms are equipped with a ventilation fan designed to suck up hot air and humidity, allowing the ventilation system to exchange it for fresh, clean air. Some ventilation fans operate automatically when the light turns on in the bathroom while others have an exclusive switch. Like all ventilation systems, these vents should be occasionally cleaned to prevent blockage. These fans require duct work to be installed from the bathroom to the outside and can be an expensive upgrade to a bathroom.

Open the Door

Older apartments and houses may not have access to a vent or window. In these cases, leaving the door open, during and after showers, can help maintain a cool temperature while giving humidity adequate room to dissipate. This will also reduce odors, which are more pungent when contained in a small area.

Other Fans

Portable fans and, where possible, ceiling fans can also be used to circulate air, reducing humidity while also cooling air temperature. While ceiling fans are sealed units and connect to the home's power system, plug-in electrical fans should be located away from open water sources, such as the sink or shower.

Change A Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Change a Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Bathroom exhaust fans play an important role in circulating air and preventing moisture buildup in bathrooms. When fans fail to operate, the most effective repair is to replace the fan unit. This is a relatively simple procedure that involves removing the fan motor cover and removing the retaining screws which hold the old fan in place and inserting a new unit. The replacement procedure is simple and inexpensive and can be completed in 5 to 10 minutes.

Instructions

Remove Old Exhaust Fan

1. Using a stool positioned directly beneath the inoperative fan, grasp 2 opposite sides of the plastic fan cover and pull cover down 2 to 3 inches until wire holding clasps on each side are exposed.

2. Squeeze the 2 wires on each clasp together until the fan cover is released and set aside fan cover.

3. Locate fan electrical plug and unplug the connection from the electrical outlet.

4. Locate the screw securing the fan unit to the ceiling. This is often found directly adjacent the electrical outlet. Some fan models will have 2 securing screws. These will be located on opposite sides of the fan base.

5. Use flat-head screwdriver to remove securing screw, pull fan out of the fan well and set old fan aside.

Install Replacement Exhaust Fan

6. Align replacement fan in position to allow electrical plug to be inserted in electrical socket and plug into electrical outlet.

7. Insert fan into ceiling well and secure by inserting and tightening securing screw(s).

8. Test fan by turning on wall switch. If fan fails to operate, check to be certain that the plug is fully inserted into the electrical outlet. If fan still does not operate, check circuit breaker and reset if necessary.

9. Replace fan cover by holding cover in place with 2 wire clasps just below the slots in the fan base. Squeeze the 2 wire ends of each clasp together and insert these into the the slots on opposite sides of the fan base. Once properly inserted, the ends of the wire claps will spring into place.

10. Push the fan cover up allowing the wire clasps to be fully inserted into the slots on the fan base, at which point the clasps will spring open securing the cover in place.

Unclog A Bathroom Sink Pipe In A Wall

Bathroom sinks over time will develop clogs as hair and other debris collect at certain points along the sink's drainpipe system. Sometimes the clog will be located in the stubout, or pipe that protrudes from the wall. The only way to remove a clog from the stubout is to feed a drain auger or snake into the pipe in an attempt to dislodge or pull out the clog's debris. While the procedure may be messy, it does not require much technical skill.

Instructions

1. Place a bucket underneath the sink to catch any water that comes out of the pipes. Clamp a pipe wrench to the sink trap connections and turn it counterclockwise to undo the connections.

2. Look into the sink trap you removed, making sure it does not have any clogs inside it. If you do see a clog, feed the auger through the sink trap to push the clog out.

3. Use your hands to undo the connection between the horizontal pipe and the stubout that protrudes from the wall. Feed the auger into the stubout until you feel resistance inside the pipe.

4. Rotate the crank on the auger's handle clockwise, and continue feeding the auger into the pipe. If the auger becomes stuck or you cannot feed it any farther but still feel resistance, turn the crank counterclockwise as you retract the auger from the stubout.

5. Retract the auger from the stubout once you no longer feel resistance. Reassemble the sink trap on the underside of the sink, and then turn on the faucet's hot water at full blast to flush down any remnants of the clog's debris.

Items For Beach Bedrooms For Kids

Transform your child's bedroom into a beach oasis.

A beach-themed bedroom captures the essence of summer year round. Children can enjoy a beach oasis in the comfort of your home in just a few quick and easy steps. The possibilities are endless. Items such as seashells, tropical flowers, lighthouses, surfboards and sand are easy to find or create with art.

Walls

For a simple and basic wall design, use paint in either blue or beige. Blue paint can capture the serenity of water on the beach, while beige may resemble sand. You may also post decals such as surfboards and seashells, which your child can pick out and place on the wall himself. For a more detailed design, have a mural painted on one accent wall or around the entire room. A mural of a beach scene complete with sandy beaches, palm trees and the ocean is a great addition to a beach-themed room.

Bedding

You have many options for beach-themed kids' bedding. For the simple approach, you can get a monotone comforter to either match the blue or beige of the walls or in contrast to emphasize the ocean and sand pairing of the beach. This simple approach will leave focus to the accessories around the room and promote relaxation on the bed rather than a distracting pattern. A more decorative approach could include a comforter with lighthouses, starfish, surfboards or tropical flowers. Try adding a grass bed skirt to add to the beach theme, similar to a hula dancer's attire.

Lighting

Include your child in decorating the lighting for the room. Add a grass hula skirt to a plain lampshade from top to bottom for a fun beach lamp. You can also have your child find shells on your next trip to the beach and glue them to a plain lampshade. Add some glow-in-the-dark star-shaped stickies to the ceiling to give a "beach under the stars" feel. This may also help children who are afraid of the dark.

Accessories

Add stickers or paint a miniature ocean scene on a light switch cover for a special touch. String together seashells from the beach with your child to create a unique garland to drape anywhere around the room. Continue with the hula skirt design and create a window covering out of the grass-like material. Another art lesson for your child could include gluing seashells to thick-banded picture frames. Add your child's favorite picture of the family at the beach for the perfect personalized beach-themed accessory.

Small Bedroom Decoration Ideas

Small can be a big deal when it comes to decorating a bedroom. Plan to toss out anything that takes up too much space and donate it to a thrift shop. Then have fun designing a whole new look for your reclaimed space.

Using Color

As a rule, lighter colors help to make a space look bigger. Use pale shades for the ceiling, walls and floor, and add dark or bold colors in accessories such as lampshades, pillows and pictures. If you prefer the look of darker walls, ceilings and floor, use only one color for all of them to give an unbroken look to your room and add the appearance of more height.

Keep the furniture light-colored to add to a spacious feeling. Paint dressers, chests, headboard and nightstands off-white, pale gray, beige or even pastel colors. For a fun finish that will make the furniture almost "disappear," paint it to match the walls or wallpaper.

Choosing Furniture

If you haven't furnished your small bedroom yet, select furniture that won't overwhelm it. Large, heavy pieces will take up a lot of floor and wall space and make the room look crowded, If you're short on storage, think vertically. Install shelving that reaches to the ceiling. You can cover half of a wall this way and still retain floor space, since the shelving won't extend as far into the room as furniture. You'll also have more room for the other pieces you'll need, such as a bed and nightstands or side tables.

Make your furniture do double duty. If you love the look of a skirted dressing table, hide storage shelves behind the skirt. Opt for a platform bed with drawers or a bookcase headboard. Make the platform bed a loft bed, with a ladder leading up to it and storage below it. Instead of a nightstand, place a tall storage cabinet beside the bed, with a pull-out shelf you can use at night.

Make a Statement

Use fabric or accessories to give your bedroom flair. Hang long draperies that reach from floor to ceiling. Choose a wrought-iron headboard in off-white that will have presence but won't overpower the room. Attach a circular canopy frame to the ceiling over the bed and hang sheer curtains from it. Add small accessories in bright colors that complement the room, such as a vase of yellow flowers, hot-pink throw pillows or electric-blue picture frames.

Install A Bathroom Sink Plumbing System

If you change the location of the sink in the bathroom, you need to install a bathroom sink plumbing system. This isn't the most challenging plumbing problem, but it requires that you measure carefully at least twice before you cut any of the PVC waste pipes or water feed pipes. Once the PVC glue sets for 30 seconds, it creates a chemical weld. If you install the sink where no vent pipe exists, you'll either need the services of a plumber or check with local code. Most of the time, a 2-inch stack vent is appropriate.

Instructions

1. Measure the distance to rough-in the water pipes. Run the pipes to the appropriate openings, 20 inches from the floor to the center of the pipe; sweat a dog-ear elbow fitting onto the water pipe. Stabilize the fitting with a board. Sweat another pipe onto the other end of the dog-ear that allows for 3 inches out of the wall. Attach the shut-off valves using the compression fitting.

2. Check your local code for the length allowed from the stack to the trap. Many codes allow for a 1-1/2-inch diameter arm, the size for sink waste pipes, to extend 5 feet from the stack to the trap. Some areas, however, limit the length to 3-1/2 feet. You'll need to create a 2-inch stack vent for the waste pipe. If you're simply moving the plumbing for the sink, make sure that the drain isn't further than code allows. If you stack vent then you'll need larger PVC pipe.

3. Bring the drain out from the wall at a height of 19 inches on center and 8 inches from each of the water pipes. There are two different options available for draining the sink. The S trap connects at the floor level and often isn't allowed on new bathroom installations but is grand fathered many places. The P-trap comes from the wall and is the most code worthy type of trap. Bring the drainpipe to the location where you'll attach the P-trap. The easiest type of material to work with is PVC, but if you have the pipes exposed, you may want chrome.

4. Attach the faucet on the sink. If you have a two-handle faucet, create an outline of plumbers putty or use a plastic seal that comes with some faucets. Put the nuts on the threaded area that fits through the holes to tighten down the faucet.

5. Install the drain into the sink. Put plumbers putty around the opening before inserting the drain. Tighten it underneath. Create the dry run of the P-trap to fit into the wall pipe. You may need to add a slip joint extension piece if the pipe doesn't fit into the wall properly. Tighten at the drain. Once properly in fitted, spread thread compound onto the area where the P-trap fits with the wall plumbing. Hand-tighten it if it's PVC. If it's chrome, then a use a hand-tighten plus a turn with a channel lock. Test for leaks. Fill the basin with water and release.

6. Insert the plastic supply lines into the shut off and tighten it down. Insert the other end into the faucet and tighten it by hand. It's a good idea to use Teflon tape on the threads before you tighten it. Turn on the main water supply and check for leaks. If you find a leak, shut it off at the new shut off valve and re-tighten the plumbing.

Wire For A Bathroom Fan

A ventilation fan for a bathroom typically is wired to a standard lighting/receptacle circuit. Depending on the model, the fan may be controlled by a regular, single-pole wall switch or a timer switch. Some fans include a built-in humidistat switch that automatically turns the fan off when the room air is sufficiently dry. Contact the fan manufacturer to learn about compatible switch options for your model. In a standard installation, a vent fan is connected to the switch with the fan at the end of the cable run, just as with standard light fixture wiring.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the circuit cable feeding the electrical box for the wall switch at the home's service panel (breaker box).

2. Install the fan housing to the ceiling framing, following the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Run 14-gauge, 2-wire, non-metallic cable (14/2 NM) from the fan housing to the electrical box for the switch; this is the "fan cable." Secure the cable every 4 1/2 feet and within 12 inches of the fan housing and electrical box (or as directed by the local building code), using insulated cable staples.

4. Connect the switch to the source cable and fan cable, following the switch manufacturer's wiring diagram. Mount the switch to the electrical box, and install the cover plate.

5. Install the fan's motor unit, as applicable. (Some fans come with the motor pre-installed.) Connect the fan cable to the motor unit as directed by the manufacturer. Most fans have two wire leads that connect to the matching black and white cable wires with wire nuts (plastic wire connectors), plus a ground screw for connecting the cable's ground wire to the fan housing.

6. Complete the fan installation (running duct, installing vent cap, attaching grille) as directed. Restore power to the source circuit, and test the fan operation.

The Best Sunblocking Drapes For The Bedroom

A dark curtain or drape will minimize bedroom sun exposure.

The bedroom is a room for escape for sleep and rest. If undisturbed sleep is vital, curtains and drapes that blockout sun are a must for bedroom decorating. The fabric and color of the chosen drape are key to blocking out sun from bedroom windows. Keep these two elements in mind while choosing bedroom curtains.

Blackout Curtains

Blackout-style curtains are made from heavy fabric that blocks out sunlight. They also help insulate rooms, because much heat and energy is lost through windows.Blackout curtains have a tightly woven backing, often multi-layered, which blocks most of the light that comes through bedroom windows. You can also easily transform your old curtains into blackout style by adding blackout liners from a craft or haberdashery store.

Lined Curtains

Thermal-lined curtains or lined curtains in general are efficient in blocking out sunlight from bedrooms windows so you can catch extra sleep. Thermal-lined drapes have a liner made from insulating material. A thermal liner can not only block out unwanted sunlight but keep cold drafts and summer heat outside the house. Double-lined curtains reduce sunlight's encroaching capabilities by using two layers of lining. Double-lined drapes are thick and heavy, blocking sunlight, insulating windows and adding privacy.

Colors

The best sun-blocking drapes will be in darker colors. Light colored drapes allow more sun to filter through. Dark colors such as black, dark green, dark blue and dark brown stop sunlight from penetrating. They will also filter the remaining light as dark in color, as the light must hit the drapes first before entering the bedroom.

Fabrics

The thicker the drape material, the better the drape will be at preventing sunlight from coming through the window. Sheer, thin fabrics are inefficient in blocking out sunlight. You will want to use thick or woven fabrics like wool, burlap, dungaree and muslin for sun-blocking drapes. You can make these yourself with the appropriate fabrics or purchase them in store.

Darken A Bedroom

So you’ve just moved into your new apartment and found it too bright for your own liking. Or maybe your existing room has the same problem. There are numerous easy ways to darken a room, ranging from the ultra-simplistic to the semi-difficult. With a few simple steps, you can create a darker, more inviting room.

Instructions

Darkening Your Bedroom

1. Perhaps the easiest way to darken any room is to put black-out shades on all of the windows. This is especially true if your room has windows that directly face the sun for most of the day (or in the morning). You can purchase black-out shades from any major home-furnishings store; the price can range from around $20 to $200 depending on the style and overall quality. Make sure that you measure your windows before heading to the store. Measure across the top of the window frame, as well as determining how long the window actually is.

2. If you can’t afford a black-out shade, using dark bed sheets is another great way to darken any room. Make sure that the sheets you choose are quite large; king-size works best. You will want to fold the sheets over at least twice -- three times, if you can -- to maximize light blocking. Once you have folded the sheets appropriately, you can drape them over your windows in order to make them look like more then a simple sheet.

3. With your hammer and nails, nail the sheets into position. Do not use tacks, because the sheets will weight them down, and you will soon find your newly made drapes on the ground.

4. If blocking light isn’t enough to darken your room, you will want to actually darken the entire room through painting. Visit your local home-improvement shop and pick out a darker paint to apply to your walls. A deep red, green or even dark blue are great hues with which to darken your room yet still keep it warm and inviting.

5. Make sure that you cover all of your furniture before you begin painting; if possible, remove it completely from your room. Place masking tape where the ceiling meets the walls to prevent paint from getting on your ceiling. You may need to re-paint your room a couple of times to make sure the color is as deep as you desire.

Decorating Ideas For A Large Master Bedroom

A large master bedroom is the perfect opportunity to experiment with decorating styles.

A large master bedroom offers an ideal opportunity to explore creative design and decor to create the private retreat of your dreams. Your personal design tastes should dictate the decorative choices in your master bedroom. Choose details based on your love for shabby chic country design or your affinity for Asian-inspired contemporary pieces; whatever your tastes, a large master bedroom provides ample canvas space for exploring your personality and style.

Walls and Floors

A large master bedroom offers enough space and light to handle the visual impact of bold wall and floor colors. Warm colors such as burgundy, rust orange, yellow and purple reduce the loftiness of the space and make the room feel cozy and romantic. To maintain the feeling of size, opt for a pale cool color such as mint green or sky blue. If you go with a neutral wall color, create a bold accent wall in a pattern or darker hue of the wall color. For example, white walls get a sophisticated update if you cover an accent wall with a toile or damask-patterned wallpaper.

Although traditionally bedrooms feature carpet to offer heat and sound insulation, consider the natural appeal of hardwood or laminate hardwood flooring. The smooth, reflective hardwood surface helps balance light within the space. To soften the hard floods, a bright-colored or asymmetrical area rug placed beneath or at the foot of the bed adds charm and visual interest to the space.

Lighting

Effective lighting is essential in a large master bedroom to prevent the space from appearing too cave-like. Traditional table and standing lamps likely do not produce enough light for a large room, especially if it features vaulted or cathedral ceilings. Choose a modern lighting alternative such as cable or track lighting to offer even disbursement across the entire space. Around the bed and desk, add built-in recessed lighting for concentrated light for reading. If your bedroom features high ceilings, a chandelier-style fixture is a stunning alternative lighting option that gives off ample light. A traditional crystal chandelier is a romantic addition to a traditional-style bedroom, while a contemporary hanging fixture made from brushed nickel or stainless steel adds streamlined elegance to a modern space. Keep chandeliers on a dimmer switch to offer control over brightness during the daytime.

Furniture

Instead of investing in a bedroom set made of several large pieces of furniture, select one or two oversized pieces to avoid making the space feel cluttered. A canopy or four-poster bed adds an element of romantic opulence to a large master bedroom; a king-sized bed in a low frame is a suitable option for more contemporary spaces. To create a welcoming dual-function space, designate an area of the bedroom as a seating area. If your room features a fireplace or wood stove, a small area rug and overstuffed chairs create a cozy seating area. Install a window seat beneath a large window and line the surrounding wall space with book shelves to create a reading nook. Although it may be tempting, avoid creating an office space in a master bedroom; bringing work into the bedroom transforms the space into a working area rather than a relaxing area.

Remove A Burn Mark From A Dining Room Table

Hot pots can cause burn marks on dining room tables.

Wood furniture, even when stained, will not take kindly to hot items or fire touching its surface. The dining room table, because you eat on it, is more likely to get burns than any other piece of furniture in the home. A hot pot set on the surface, or a candle that tips over can leave a horrifying scorch mark. Luckily, most minor burns in wood can be scuffed out without ruining the wood or stain.

Instructions

1. Dip a clean cloth in lemon juice and scrub the area to remove heat marks. Polish the area with a wood oil to bring back its luster.

2. Dip a 0000 steel wool piece in cooking oil and rub it gently along the grain of the wood if the lemon juice does not work. Gently rub the oil into the mark. Examine the mark in the wood after each pass with the steel wool to prevent taking up too much of the stain. Polish the wood once the stain is removed.

3. Dig out the stain using a curved blade. Work the edge of the blade into the stain and lightly carve out the mark. Use a fine-grit sand paper folded into a small square to remove the char if a curved blade is not available. Apply stain that matches the existing stain to cover up the exposed area.

Paint A Romantic Bedroom

Neutral colors soften a room's angles.

A fresh coat of paint can change your drab, cold bedroom into a romantic getaway. Regardless of your budget, painting the walls a soft, sensual color is a quick way to add a hint of romance to the room. Choose a paint color that means romance to you; it can be found in a favorite fabric, favorite rug or your lover's eyes. Requiring very few supplies and only a modicum of time, painting your bedroom can be done in a weekend.

Instructions

1. Select a paint color. Neutral tones, such as earthy tans and beige, coordinate well with bright accent colors, while warm tones, including red, yellow and spicy orange, create a sexy feel. Cool, relaxing tones include blue, soft green and light purple shades.

2. Prepare the room for painting. Remove any artwork, furniture and accessories from the room. Remove the covers from light switches and outlets. Cover floors and large furniture with canvas cloths. Cover any remaining hardware with painter's tape.

3. Prime the walls with a primer tinted the same color as the final color. Primer fills a wall's pores to create an even base for the paint. Sand the primer with 120-grit sandpaper and wipe it down with a damp sponge before painting.

4. Use a 2 1/2-inch angled brush to cut in paint around the perimeter of the room, along the ceiling and along trim molding. To cut in, apply paint about an inch from the edge of the wall. Turn the brush onto its bristles, pressing down on the longest bristles to form a point. Apply the brush point to the wall to create a clean line of paint where the wall meets the trim.

5. Dampen the paint roller by rolling it in water for latex paints or paint thinner for oil paints.

6. Dip the roller into a paint tray filled with paint, completely covering the roller.

7. Apply paint to the remainder of the walls with the roller in a W or M shape on the wall. Overlap vertical strokes, maintaining a wet edge between the strokes. Overlap roller strokes along the cut-in edges as well to blend the paint.

8. Apply a second coat of paint to the walls if desired.

9. Paint the trim with a straight-edged brush on wide moldings and a small sash brush for straight lines along the edge.

Decorate A Bedroom With Brown And Purple

Purple provides a calming feel in a bedroom.

Deep purple hues combined with chocolate browns may induce a state of relaxation and make these colors ideal for a bedroom. Decorating this personal space depends entirely on the tastes of its occupants. Brown and purple items can be found in all styles of furniture and accessories. Look at pictures in interior decorating magazines for inspiration when planning your purple and brown bedroom.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls of your bedroom a light purple or brown color. Dark colors tend to evoke a gloomy feel in a bedroom so sticking to lighter hues avoids this potential problem.

2. Place an area rug on the floor if the bedroom isn't already carpeted. Get a rug with a dominant color theme of brown or purple or a pattern that incorporates both.

3. Choose matching brown wood furniture for the bed frame, dresser, night stand, desk, shelves and any other pieces for the bedroom.

4. Choose silver accent pieces like curtain rods, door knobs and lamps, as this color adds a softer feel to the area when combined with brown and purple.

5. Place accessories on shelves and table tops throughout the bedroom that have a dominant color theme of purple or brown. For example, decorative purple glass objects, brown accent pillows and purple flowers in a brown vase.

6. Hang brown or purple curtains above the windows. Choose a color that's darker than the wall color to avoid a monochrome feel in the bedroom.

7. Choose a sheet set and comforter in opposite colors. For example, chocolate brown sheets with a royal purple comforter.

Paint A Dining Table For Outdoor Use

Continue to use your dining table in other household areas.

Barbecues, outdoor parties or a simple weekend lunch with the family are all great occasions to use an outdoor table. An outdoor table is a nice addition to your outdoor patio and yard, if sometimes a costly one. If you have an old dining table you just cannot bear to throw away, repurpose it with paint or varnish to create a table for outdoor use.

Instructions

Using Colored Paint

1. Clean the dining table with mild liquid soap and water. Allow the table to dry completely.

2. Use the sandpaper to remove any finish that is on the wood table. You need to sand away the existing finish completely prior to applying a new coat of paint to ensure the new paint adheres properly.

3. Use a paintbrush to apply a coat of oil-based primer to the table. An oil-based product penetrates the wood surface easily and is more durable than water-based products. Wear disposable gloves to protect your hands from being stained by the paint.

4. You can use colored paint to match existing patio furniture.

Apply outdoor paint to the freshly sanded dining table. You can choose to use spray paint or gallon paint and a paintbrush; either method works well. Outdoor paint is important to use as it can withstand the weather elements, such as rain, snow and sunshine, which can warp and destroy the wood surface.

5. Allow the freshly painted dining table to dry for 48 hours before using.

Natural Wood Finish

6. Follow Steps 1 and 2 in Section 1 to prepare the indoor dining table for outdoor use.

7. Use a finishing pad to apply marine varnish or tinted polyurethane. You can purchase these pads at paint stores and home improvement stores. Work with the grain of the wood for a consistent and natural wood appearance.

8. Wipe off the varnish or polyurethane with lint-free shop paper towels. Wipe in the direction of the grain. The shop paper towels are more durable than commercial paper towels and you can purchase them at paint stores and home improvement stores. Work quickly before the varnish begins to dry and becomes too sticky to work with.

9. Let the varnish dry overnight and repeat Step 3 up to five times. Numerous coats of varnish give the wood the durability to endure outdoor elements.

Make Your Bedroom Ecofriendly With Ecobedroom Sets

Sleep easier on an environmentally safe bed.

Go green within your home to lessen your exposure to toxic chemicals and other environmental hazards. Start by transforming your bedroom into a cozy eco-friendly paradise. In addition to looking for bedroom furniture made from reclaimed or recycled materials, replace your mattress with an organic one, as traditional commercial mattresses are often made from petroleum-derived polyester and other synthetic materials that can negatively affect health. Another benefit of purchasing organic bedroom items, such as organic cotton sheets, is the low impact the manufacturing of such materials has on the planet.

Instructions

1. Purchase bedroom furniture made from recycled lumber or other sustainable material, such as bed frames created from bamboo. Support local businesses and cut down on carbon monoxide emissions by buying furniture locally. Another option is to refinish old bedroom furniture a friend or family member was going to throw out.

2. Place an organic mattress and box spring on the frame, if applicable. Organic mattresses are made with organic cotton and chemical-free wool, with natural rubber, or latex, mattresses also available depending on your bedding preference. Using organic mattresses lessens your exposure to toxic chemicals, as well as dust mites. Natural wool is a dust mite repellent and also insulates well and absorbs humidity, meaning it will stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

3. Buy environmentally friendly sheets, pillows, duvet covers, shams and comforters. Look for those made of pure organic cotton, flannel or silk depending on preference. Buy locally if possible to further add to the eco-friendliness of your bedroom.

4. Use other eco-friendly decor pieces to round out your environmentally friendly bedroom. Consider chairs made of recycled plastic, or those that have been reupholstered and made new again. Look for desks made of recycled lumber, as well as decor items from yard sales, flea markets and consignment shops to avoid buying new.

Stay Safe In A Public Restroom

Stay Safe in a Public Restroom

The primary reason for using techniques for staying safe in public restrooms is to avoid contracting infectious diseases. Because public restrooms are used by many different people, and store employees usually clean them only once or twice per day, they are highly unsanitary. Another reason to stay safe in a public reason is to protect yourself from criminals.

Instructions

Stay Safe from Diseases

1. Wear shoes or sandals when entering public restrooms. Never go into one without shoes on. Particles of other people's waste can splash onto the floor during toilet use and during flushing.

2. Inspect the toilet and the interior of the stall when you enter it. If the toilet actually has fecal matter or urine still in the toilet or on the toilet seat, use a different toilet. If you can squat or hover above the seat while using the toilet, this is the best choice. Otherwise, cover the seat with toilet paper. If there are flushable seat covers available, use one.

3. Remember that some toilets have a very strong flushing mechanism, which can spray water droplets when flushed. Therefore, get out of the stall as quickly as you can after flushing the toilet. If the toilet is one that flushes automatically, try to get out of the stall before it flushes. If you have to flush it yourself, use toilet paper to shield your hand from the handle or button, or flush it with your foot.

4. Wash your hands with the hottest water you can stand. Remember to wash for the recommend 20 seconds for best results. There is no harm in washing your hands twice if you want.

5. Get some toilet tissue or a paper towel with which to open the door. One of the most common mistakes people make when in a public restroom is washing their hands and then grasping the door handle when they leave. There are germs on this surface as well.

Stay Safe from Criminals

6. Be aware of everything that is going on around you, particularly other people. Sometimes a criminal will try to corner a woman in a restroom to commit thievery or occasionally physical assault. If you feel someone might be following you, don't go into the public restroom.

7. Keep your purse and belongings safe. If you have many packages, it's really a good idea not to use a public restroom. If you place them on the floor, then they will collect germs. If you hang things from the hook on the door, it is easy for someone to reach over the top and simply pull it off. If you must hang up your bags, keep your purse on your shoulder or wear it messenger-bag style so that nobody can steal it while you are using the toilet.

8. Remember to lock the door. If it is a large public restroom, you obviously can only lock the stall door. If it is a single restroom, go ahead and lock yourself in. If the door won't lock, don't use the restroom unless you have a friend to stand outside and guard the door for you.

The Best Hotel Dining Rooms In Dc

Some people go to Washington, D.C. specifically to eat because the city has some of the best restaurants in the world. Even the hotels, known elsewhere for mediocre fare, have great restaurants with chefs of renown who have items on their menus to please your palate.

Lafayette Room

This restaurant is in the Hay-Adams Hotel where you are able to view the White House. While you cannot go wrong by going to the Lafayette Room for Sunday brunch, the true test of a gourmet restaurant is what it has on the dinner menu, and this restaurant passes with flying colors. Start your meal with an appetizer such as Black and Blue Ahi Tuna with sweet mango and a spicy Japanese radish salad, or Texas coast shrimp and black garlic ravioli with saut ed shrimp and artichokes. Segue to an entree like roasted Georges Bank scallops with fennel and topped with orange Pernod butter or grilled Niman Ranch beef filet of Short Rib with braised root vegetables.

Michel Richard Citronelle

Michel Richard Citronelle is in the Latham Hotel, where some congressional people and other dignitaries dine. Chef Michel Richard has put together a creative menu and the 8,000-bottle wine cellar is one of the best in the city. You can choose dishes from the tasting menu for $150 per person, as of January, 2011, and they include dorade royale with fingerling potatoes and Asian-style duck with spring rolls and potato fried rice among several others. Sit at the Chef's Table and be prepared to spend as much as $275 per person.

Ici Urban Bistro

Ici Urban Bistro is in a Swiss Hotel, Sofitel Lafayette Square on 15th Street, so it's not a typical French restaurant. Only seasonal ingredients are used and its menu is very contemporary. Start your meal with Chesapeake Lump Crab Duo with jumbo lump crab and an avocado salad as well as crisp crab with a sweet pepper spring roll or Fois Gras Terraine consisting of Hudson Valley foie gras, a Virginia Braeburn apple gel e and chips, and served with a mâche salad. For your entree, try roasted halibut with toasted gingerbread crust and accompanied by zucchini tagliatelle with white wine and pepper emulsion or Veal Tenderloin with York orchard apples, wilted Vates kale, and oyster mushrooms in Cardamom jus.

CityZen

There's no question who's in charge of CityZen in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. It's Ric Ziebold who's chef de cuisine and a James Beard Award winner. The menu is modern American through and through, but chef Zeibold interjects some foreign dishes on it like valk shank served with potato gnocchi. Start with an appetizer such as Confit Of Moulard Duck Foie Gras served with cranberry stew, Star Anise scented pain perdu and crystallized orange. For your entree, order one of several dishes like pan seared Maine Diver scallops with braised Cardoons, Spanish capers, Piquillo peppers and Castillo de Tabernas olive oil. Top off your meal with the restaurant's version of a banana split which is roasted banana fritters with creme brul e ice cream and mocha coulis.

The Best Home Product To Clean Bathroom Tiles

The right product will make bathroom tile cleaning an easier task.

Bathroom cleaning is a routine and important chore in every home. Cleaning bathroom tiles may require dealing with soap scum, oily residues and minerals from water, however. These deposits can be troublesome and may require harsh chemicals and heavy scrubbing. Fortunately, the right home cleaning product can help make cleaning bathroom tiles easier and less time-consuming.

Method Daily Shower Spray

Method Daily Shower Spray Cleaner is a non-toxic tile and tub cleaner that is applied to surfaces without having to scrub or rinse. Results may take up to three or four weeks, but the product does remove soap scum, water stains and mildew, according to Galttech. You must spray all areas completely, however. The manufacturer states that no animals are used in testing the product.

Kaboom Bathroom, Tub & Tile Cleaner

In a side-by-side test of bathroom cleaners that included both Scrubbing Bubbles and Kaboom Bathroom Cleaner, Kaboom provided easier cleaning and better action on grout and rust stains, according to RetroHousewife. Kaboom was allowed to sit on bathroom tile surfaces for one to three minutes, then rinsed with a wet cloth until no cleaner residue remained. Kaboom worked particularly well on the hard-to-reach areas around faucets and knobs, without scrubbing.

Green Works Natural Bathroom Cleaner

Many consumers are interested in organic products that are less toxic to the environment, sparking an array of new organic products on the shelves for the environmentally conscious. Green Works, made with plant- and mineral-based ingredients, was rated by ConsumerReports.org as the best bathroom cleaning product among those that claimed to be natural. The website advises using the product frequently to remove and prevent mildew build-up.

Oxygen Bleach Cleaner

For those who prefer a simpler and less expensive product that they can keep on hand for a number of home cleaning tasks, AskTheBuilder recommends using oxygen bleach for cleaning bathroom tile. Oxygen bleach does a good job removing the dirt and grime that sticks onto bathroom tile grout and will not hurt adjacent carpeting.

Homemade Cleaner

Many people express concern about the harsh chemicals in home cleaning products and prefer to go back to the old cleaners that our grandparents once used to clean kitchens and bathrooms. MrsCleanUSA recommends a homemade cleaner using ½ cup ammonia, ½ cup of plain white vinegar, ¼ cup of washing soda (Borax) mixed in 1 gallon of water. It will do as good a job as expensive, commercial cleaners. Pour some of the solution in a spray bottle and apply to bathroom tile surfaces. Rinse the tile thoroughly and buff tile lightly with a clean cloth.

Decorate A Bedroom On A Very Tight Budget

Decorating on a budget doesn't mean skimping on taste.

Even though not many people may see your bedroom, it's important for you to feel relaxed and comfortable there. With a little imagination and a small budget, you can turn your bedroom into a peaceful retreat. Decorating on a budget means making the most of everything, and that begins with a strategy. If you stick to a plan, it’s possible to decorate your bedroom and give it a sense of harmony without spending a lot of cash.

Instructions

1. Paint your bedroom for an instant transformation. Paint is inexpensive, and changing the color of your bedroom can make it seem completely redecorated. Choose a favorite color and one you're not likely to tire of quickly. The color should be soothing, like a muted blue or cream as opposed to a bright color like fuchsia. Complement the colors you have in your room, including furniture, window treatments and bed coverings.

2. Use secondhand items to dress up your bedroom. You can find functional and decorative pieces at garage sales and flea markets. Spruce up used items easily with a good cleaning or a coat of paint to make them seem like new. Refreshed with new paint, an old telephone table can function as a unique bedside table. Shop for affordable pieces of art that match your decor, or re-frame artwork you already own.

3. Use a folding table or television tray for a vanity table. Cover with a cloth, if necessary. Lean or hang a mirror on the wall, and hang an inexpensive swag light over the table.

4. Use plants as decorative accessories in your bedroom. Plants are inexpensive and can make a room feel peaceful. Place plants on a small table in the corner for a boost of color. If you don’t have much space, try hanging them from your ceiling.

5. Use tray tables or a stack of boxes for end tables. Cover boxes with samples of wallpaper or contact paper.

6. Rearrange the lighting in your bedroom. Find an inexpensive lamp or move existing lamps to new spots. Lamplight warms a room and can instantly change how a bedroom looks and feels.

Small Bathroom Concepts

Adding color to a small bathroom with neutral colors will make the space appealing.

A home or apartment with a small bathroom may mean you have to store some of your toiletries in the bedroom or that you're not quite sure decorate the bathroom with colors and decor items that won't take over the space. Making some major -- or minor -- renovations to your bathroom can make the area appear more spacious and turn the area into one of the most impressive parts of your living space.

Use Light Colors

Painting the walls with light colors will make the bathroom look bigger; intense and bold colors make the area seem closed in. Pastel shades are ideal for bathroom walls; warmer hues like dusty rose add a sense of comfort to the space, and cooler color choices like sea foam green or light blue give the bathroom a relaxed feel. You can also add lightly colored linens to the towel racks on the wall, or grace the bathtub with a lilac or light yellow shower curtain to make your small bathroom just a little more colorful and spacious.

Add an Accent Piece

Include an eye-catching piece in the bathroom to make the entire room more appealing; this way, the focus won't be entirely on the limited space of the bathroom. For instance, add a shower curtain with bright red and yellow patterns to break up the monotony of the white walls, or place a cobalt blue area rug in the center of the bathroom to offset the gray walls or counters. A large piece of artwork in a gold or silver frame, or a series of mirrors and sconces on the accent wall, draws the eye to the wall -- not to the rest of the bathroom's limited area.

Retile the Bathroom

Take the existing tiles out of the bathroom to add much smaller -- or larger -- tiles to the area. In a black and white bathroom, install black tiles to the floor to give the bathroom some height, or add tiny tiles in a light shade of gray or yellow so the area has a wider feel. Add tiles in a vibrant color to make the floor the most appealing part of the bathroom, such as magenta tiles in a black bathroom. Large tiles against the bathtub walls add height to bathrooms as well, and eye-catching hues in this area are a refreshing dose of color to the bathroom.

Add Attractive Storage

A small bathroom will likely have limited storage, so adding places to house the linens or display small decorations like potpourri and candles will give the bathroom a comfortable feel without taking up extra space. Dark wood shelves in a bathroom with brown or bronze accents are best; adding linens in a burst of color like lemon yellow or turquoise, along with black candles, is a temporary way to customize the bathroom until you're ready to change the color scheme. A small basket in the corner spray painted in the shade of your choice and filled with plush towels and synthetic flowers is a charming addition to the bathroom that won't take up too much room.

Decorate A Japanese Bedroom

Shoji Screen

A Japanese bedroom can be a tranquil place to contemplate and sleep. Japanese style is minimalist so it's an inexpensive way to furnish a room. Decorating your bedroom with this theme may remind you of a favorite vacation or philosophy. You might not even have to paint the walls in order to create a Japanese bedroom. A Japanese theme will add character to your bedroom even if you're living in a rental.

Instructions

1. Remove any unused furniture from the bedroom. Place a dresser inside the closet so you have more open floor space. Simplify your life by getting rid of any items that you don't use, want, or need. Japanese design is about simplicity and cleanliness.

2. Bring in paper screens. Shoji screens are made out of rice paper and wood or bamboo. This is a traditional Japanese decorating element. Use a screen to create an entryway into your room. Shoji screens can hide unwanted elements in your bedroom such as exercise equipment or a home office. If you don't like the view out of your bedroom window, place a screen in front of it. Shoji screens can serve as window treatments, giving you privacy and allowing light in.

3. Keep furniture low to the ground. Platform beds and futons are traditional in Japanese design. This may mean that you will only need a mattress instead of a mattress and box spring set, which will save you money. Platform beds are also common in modern design so you'll be able to reuse your furniture if you change decorating styles.

4. Use neutrals with a pop of color. Japanese decorating focuses on balance like the yin and yan. This style works well if you can't agree with your spouse about decorate the bedroom. If you have white walls, try dark chocolate brown or black furniture. Bring color into one item in the room like a pillow or vase so it really stands out against the neutral colors.

5. Hang opulent fabrics. Silk is common in Japanese design. Translate this into elegant curtains or a wall hanging. Keep your bedding the same neutral colors as the wall. A silk fabric will add texture and interest to the room.

6. Focus on craftsmanship. Japanese decorating focuses more on quality than quantity. Purchase pieces that you truly love and that will last for several years. Quality furniture also adds a luxurious feeling to the room even if you don't have a lot of furniture pieces.

7. Buy furniture with multiple functions. When you think of Japanese decorating you might think of futons. Futons can be used for sitting or sleeping. If you live in a small space, look for bedroom furniture that can serve dual purposes. A trunk at the end of the bed can be either a bench or storage.

8. Arrange furniture in the center of the space. Japanese style uses the middle of the room. Try placing your bed in the center of the room instead of against the wall. This makes it the focal point of the room. It's an unusual furniture arrangement that will change the feeling of your existing bedroom for free.

9. Choose nature inspired artwork. Nature is a common element in Japanese design. Cherry blossoms and other trees are often themes in Japanese art.

Fine Dining Etiquette Rules

Always use the appropriate utensils based on what you are served.

Whether it's your first time going to a fine dining establishment or you want to impress the clients you are taking to dinner, its important to be well-versed in proper dining etiquette so you won't embarrass yourself. You'll do fine as long as you remember a few basic rules for dining at an upscale restaurant.

Seating

Always wait for the host of the dinner whether at a home or in a restaurant to sit before you do. Enter the chair from the right side to avoid bumping other people. A man should always pull out the chair of a woman. If it is a group dinner, preferably a man would pull out the chair of a woman to the to the right of him. Also, when any woman stands to leave the table or return, the men should stand up.

Napkins

Unfold your napkin as soon as you are seated at the table and place it in your lap. If you need to leave the table, place the napkin loosely on one side of your plate and never on your seat. You do not need to fold it, but don't wad it up on the table either. Do not use your napkin to wipe your nose or any of the cutlery, although you may dab your mouth with it.

Utensils

Always use the utensils furthest away from your plate and work your way in, as the appropriate food will be served in that order at a fine dining dinner. Your salad fork will be the furthest away on the left side of the plate next to the napkin, followed by your dinner fork and your dessert fork. On the right of your plate the soup spoon will be the furthest away, then the teaspoon, then the dinner knife. The butter knife and plate will be above your forks. Glasses will be above your knife and spoons.

Wine and Berages

At each place setting at a fine dining dinner, you should have at least two glasses, one for water and one for wine, though there may be two wine glasses, one for red and one for white. If you don't want wine, when the waiter comes by you may simply inform him that you don't want any. Holding your hand over the wine glass is considered impolite by some. Accept an alternative nonalcoholic beverage if the server offers. If you are drinking wine, always hold the glass by the stem only and sip casually.

Table Manners

Wait to start eating until everyone has been served their food. Never slouch, sit up straight and keep your elbows off the table at all times. Your less dominant hand should remain in your lap unless you are using it for cutting your food or buttering bread. Never use a toothpick or your fingers to pick at food in your teeth. Instead excuse yourself to go to the bathroom. The same applies if you are sneezing or coughing a lot. Always pass the salt and pepper shakers together.

Eating

Avoid putting too much food in your mouth at a time and don't blow on the food if it is too hot. Instead let it cool slightly. A fork should only be used to pick up food, not scoop. For small vegetables like peas, use your knife to hold the peas steady so that you can pierce them onto the fork. For soup, place the spoon fully in your mouth rather than slurping the liquid through your lips. Try everything on your plate especially if you are at someone's home. Place your utensils across your plate when you finish eating.

Conversation

Avoid discussing controversial or sensitive subjects such as religion, politics and risque topics. Choose comfortable topics such as hobbies, careers, travel, and other interests.Talk equally to the person seated on both sides of you at a group dinner. Speak in normal to lower voice tones so that everyone can carry on their own conversations. Never have a conversation on your phone at the dinner table. In fact, your cell phone should be off, in your purse which should be underneath your seat or on your lap if its small enough.

Design A Princess Bedroom

Children love the world of fantasy and enjoy imagining the fairytale life of castles, dragons, knights and princesses. A princess-themed bedroom is a natural choice for children who like the world of happily ever after. With some splashes of color, a few choice pieces and a bit of sweat, you will have a bedroom fit for a princess.

Instructions

1. Start with color. Designing for a princess bedroom can incorporate the classic shades of pink and lavender, but you can also consider jewel tones such as turquoise, jade, ruby red and amethyst. Metallic shades of silver, gold, bronze and copper add a regal air to the bedroom.

2. Add some accent colors. The frilly princess look can be achieved with accents of antique white, pale peach or floral patterns. The designer princess look can have frothy pink anchored by a poppy orange, or lavender grounded with light brown trim. The modern princess enjoys sleek white, sea-foam green or groovy paisley.

3. Bling out the bed. It would not be a princess bedroom without some kind of ornamentation or drapery adding visual pop to the bed. This does not have to be a major investment. You can improvise a canopy with a simple mosquito net hung over the bed. You can create the illusion of an ornamented headboard by painting designs directly on the wall behind the bed. Tie gauzy ribbons around bed posts or invest in some lacy, frilly pillowcases to add a feminine touch.

4. Accessorize the look. You can go for the Disney princess look with cartoon princesses on the trash bin, curtains and comforter. Or you can add a crown-shaped throw rug, ornamental stencils on walls and furniture, a lamp spray-painted gold, bouquets of cloth flowers or a toy box transformed into a jeweled treasure chest.

5. Personalize the space. Add princess-themed name plates, growth charts or frames for artwork. Place family photographs in frames that you have spray painted gold and decorated with glitter or sequins. Let you child do a small project for the space, such as painting a night stand or step stool in princess colors.

1. Paint one accent wall a bright, modern color. This wall should be the main wall in the room, perhaps the one that your bed or TV sits against. Use a slate purple or slate blue, a bright green or blue, or even red. When choosing a color keep in mind the elaborate detail of vintage pieces and try to imagine each color as a backdrop. Also, make sure the color isn't so bold that it will take away from the other elements of the room.

2. Mix and match furniture, buying some pieces with simple lines and colors and others with a more distinct vintage look. For instance, pair a simple modern headboard with antique or vintage looking nightstands or a vintage desk or vanity. Make sure all the pieces use the same scheme or color palette. If you use too many variations your bedroom will begin to look like a thrift store.

3. Add a simple color comforter or duvet that coordinates with the wall, but be careful not to use something that is too bright. Add a few throw pillows with a modern pattern. Not only will this combine the modern look with the vintage headboard but you can also easily exchange these pillows at any time for a different pattern or color for easy redecorating.

4. Place a piece of vintage artwork on the wall. Use an actual painting of a scene from a different era or turn some of your personal photographs into black and white or sepia tone photos. If you have more modern artwork place the piece in a very vintage looking frame, perhaps one with distressed gold or a lot of detail.

5. Fill the room with vintage pieces such as a tea set from the 1950s, an antique vase filled with flowers, a retro lamp or rug, an older alarm clock, a rotary telephone or a bookshelf filled with classic novels.

Diy Indoor Dining Room Bench Seating

Installing bench seating in your dining room will ensure that you never run out of room for guests.

Dining room seating is a problem many homeowners struggle with. Homes with a small dining room have limited space for extra seating, and even if adequate space is available, extra chairs may not be. The simple solution to this problem is to build some homemade bench seating in your dining room. This project provides you with extra seating that will take up minimal space in your dining room and will save you the hassle of having to drag extra chairs from all over the house when you have company for dinner.

Instructions

1. Measure the area in which you intend to install your bench seating to determine the dimensions of the bench itself. It is best to install the bench directly against the wall, so use a measuring tape to measure out from the wall to the desired depth of the seating and record this measurement. Use the length of the table to determine the length of the seating or install the bench along the entire length of the wall for multipurpose seating.

2. Use a table saw to cut pieces of 3/4-inch pine to size for the top, bottom and sides of your bench. Use the length and depth dimensions of your desired bench to cut the top and bottom, the height and length to cut the front and back and the height and depth measurements to cut the two side pieces for the bench.

3. Lay the bottom panel flat on the ground and apply a bead of wood glue along the front edge. Stand the front panel upright against the bottom panel, aligning the bottom edges and pressing them together to create a seal with the glue. Insert 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the front panel into the thickness of the bottom panel every 4 to 6 inches to secure the two pieces of wood together.

4. Apply a bead of wood glue to the back edge of the bottom panel and attach the back panel of the bench following the same procedure as the front panel.

5. Squeeze a line of wood glue onto the side edge of the bottom panel and onto both side edges of one side panel. Slide the side panel into place between the front and back panel, pressing it into the glue applied to the bottom panel.

6. Secure the side panel in place with 1 1/2-inch wood screws driven through the front and back panels into the thickness of the side panel and through the side panel into the bottom panel. Attach the second side panel in a similar manner.

7. Cut four pieces of 1- by 4-inch pine to frame the top of the bench and to provide added support for the seat. Cut two pieces of 1- by 4-inch pine to the length of the bench and two additional pieces to the width minus 8 inches.

8. Lay the long pieces of 1- by 4-inch pine flat on top of the bench frame, aligning the outside edges. Secure the pieces of pine in place by driving nails from a nail gun down through the pine into the frame beneath. Sandwich the shorter pieces of pine between the longer pieces, aligning the outside edges, and nail them in place.

9. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall on which you intend to install your bench and make light pencil marks just above the height of the bench on the wall. Slide the bench into place against the wall and attach it by driving 3-inch wood screws through the back of the bench from the inside into the wall studs.

10. Lay the sheet of 3/4-inch pine cut for the top of the bench flat on top of the frame to serve as the seat. Secure the seat in place by driving 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the top of the bench into the flat 1- by 4-inch pieces of pine beneath it.

11. Fill any visible screw holes with wood filler and allow it to dry completely. Sand down the wood filler to a smooth surface, then paint or stain the bench as desired.

12. Arrange your choice of throw pillows or seat cushions on top of the bench to make it more comfortable.

Dream Bedroom Ideas

An exotic Moroccan bedroom

A dream bedroom bathes you in comfort, making you feel special. The room can be decorated in a variety of styles and still create this effect. Muted blue, purple, and yellow colors, along with plush fabrics, mimic the French country look. By contrast, zen-inspired rooms offer tranquil simplicity, just right for de-stressing. Moroccan accents and warm colors lend an exotic air and spice up your life. Relaxing in a dream bedroom rewards you at the end of a hectic day.

Zen Bedroom

Create this room by starting with sage or moss green walls to evoke calmness; the zen style takes its color from nature. Rest a simple mattress on top of a straight-lined chocolate brown platform bed frame. Add a matching green bed covering topped with chocolate, green, and gunmetal silver throw pillows. Use an organic wool or cotton rug in a neutral tone to cushion the floor. Alternatively, sisal throw rugs work well on a wood floor. Hang paper lanterns on each side of the bed over boxy chocolate end tables. Place large, green floor pillows around a low square table located at the end of the bed or in a comfortable corner. Include natural accessories, such as a bowl of smooth river rocks, candles, and rectangular pots of live grasses add additional natural ambiance. One large focal piece, such as a hanging water fountain, completes this design with sight, sound, and texture. This room is defined by balance and simplicity as noted by the Room Design Online website.

French Country Bedroom

White trim highlighting soft, blue walls serve as the backdrop for a casual French country-style room. Re-purposed a metal wrought iron gate as a headboard. Find a bedspread with a sunny white or yellow background, overlaid with a meadow of flowers. Choose a bed skirt and pillows covered in coordinating stripes, plaids, or toile. Hang billowy, chiffon curtains over the windows. Place a chaise lounge or cushioned bench at the foot of the bed, which is covered by a soft green, knitted throw blanket. Frame the bed with ceramic lamps sitting upon distressed, whitewashed wooden end tables. Use oval frames, hung by silk ribbons, to encase black and white family photographs. Place a rocking chair in the corner of the room by a small round table with a patterned fabric cloth. Include accessories such as china tea cups, lace hankies, old books, fresh flowers, or a bowl of lemons or apples.

Moroccan Bedroom

Curry-colored walls set the stage for this exotic bedroom. The focal point is a dark wood four poster bed, sheathed in a rich comforter in tones of paprika with gold accents. Drape red chiffon curtains over the bed like a canopy. Add satiny throw pillows in spicy red, orange, and gold tones, accented with crystal beads and fringe. Use black wrought iron sconces above dark wood end tables flanking the bedside. Create a focal wall with mosaic tile squares embedded into a gridded wooden frame. Rich oriental carpets anchor the design while adding warmth to the floor. The African Images websites suggests placing scented candles in Moroccan lamps. Moroccan pottery pieces accessorize the rest of the space.

Master Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

The master bath should ideally provde a place to escape from the pressures of the world.

The master bathroom is like an extension of the master bedroom and should keep with the theme of providing you a private oasis from the stresses of the outside world. While the master bath is an extension of your bedroom, there is no rule that says it has to be decorated in the same way. If the bedroom is decorated mainly in the style preferred by one spouse, then the bath could reflect the sensibilities of the other spouse.

Tubs

The extent of your remodeling plans may begin and end with the replacement of the tub. The master bathroom should include a tub that is a showcase item. Among the types of tubs to consider for bathroom renovation are whirlpool tubs, corner tubs and old-fashioned, detached claw-foot tubs. For a truly impressive master bathroom, consider a floor level sunken tub that you can walk directly into.

Two-sided Couples Bathroom

If you keep running into each other inside the current bathroom design, give thought to a complete redesign of the area. Place a shower unit on one side and a tub on the other. Place a sink on both sides but at different ends of the room. This design may even seem like you've got more space than you really do.

Whimsical Bathroom

A master bathroom can be more enjoyable than some children's bathrooms if you are the type who remains young at heart. Create your own whimsical paradise by painting the tub to look like a yellow submarine. Comic book collectors should consider repainting the walls to reflect their favorite characters. Movie lovers can place framed images of their favorite movies or photographs of their favorite actors. Install some shelving to showcase your collectibles. Music lovers who have transferred their entire CD collection into MP3 should create a mirrored wall by fastening their CD collection to a wall with the label-side down. Or adhere label-side out to showcase your collection.

Wood and Copper

Get rid of all that ceramic and faux ceramic fixtures that make your bathroom look like everybody else's. Wood vanities and washstands automatically lend a bathroom a distinctively new feel. Adding a polished wooden toilet seat carries this design through its logical conclusion. A freestanding copper tub provides just the right kind of contrast to all that grain. Accent the tub by installing copper faucets in your sink and copper towel holders on the wall. Of course, if you really like the whole wood look, you can even get a wooden tub.

Specialized Equipment

Remodeling for special purposes can result in the introduction of specialized elements. A walk-in hydrotherapy tub is designed with a sloping backrest and head support as well as massage jets for those who suffer chronic back pain. If your shower area means stepping into a tub, remodel to make the tub and shower unit separate to reduce the potential for falling. Go a step further and install a sitting area inside the shower for those who might have trouble standing up by themselves.
