Mount A Bathroom Mirror

Mount a Bathroom Mirror

Bathroom mirrors are not only a necessity, but they also add beauty to your room. They come in every shape and size imaginable. They have modern plain borders, or fancy borders. You can buy one in a natural wood finish, or painted. When it comes to a bathroom mirror, the choices are endless. There are as many installation methods as there are types of mirrors. A bathroom mirror can be mounted to a wall easily with no need for any construction skills.

Instructions

1. Measure and mark the length and width of the wall where you will mount your bathroom mirror. Try to position the mirror so the corners of the mirror land on a stud behind the drywall.

2. Screw a fancy 1-inch mounting hook into each of the top corners where you placed your marks. Use a screwdriver, or a screw gun, and tighten the screws so the mounts are secure. Mounting hooks come in plastic, metal, marble, and many other materials. Most mounting hooks are about 1-inch by 1-inch.

3. Apply globs of Mirror Mastic all over the back of your mirror, staying 3 inches away from the edges. The mirror adhesive comes in a caulking gun and can be squirted out in small mounds.

4. Insert the mirror under the lips of both of the upper mounting hooks, and press the mirror firmly against the wall. The mastic adhesive will create its own suction. The adhesive dries quickly, within 2 hours.

5. Have someone hold the mirror in place while you screw in the lower two mounting hooks. Place the lips of the hooks up under the lower edge of the mirror and screw them tightly in place. Although the mastic will hold the mirror adequately until it dries, the hooks give the mirror extra holding strength.

Repair A Bathroom Sink Faucet

Repair your leaky bathroom sink faucet.

The bathroom sink is probably one of the most-used fixtures in your home. Wear and tear over a period of time can cause the bathroom sink faucet to leak. Faucet leaks are common and easy to repair. Usually, only new seat washers are needed to fix the problem. You don’t have to hire a plumber to install a new washer. You can repair the bathroom sink faucet yourself.

Instructions

1. Detach the cap and handle from the faucet. Pry the top cap off of the handle with a screwdriver; then unscrew the handle screws to remove it from the faucet. Use the adjustable wrench to unscrew the packing nut (secures the stem to the faucet). If the handle is too difficult to pull up with your hands, use the faucet handle puller.

2. Take your stem apart. Pull the stem unit out with the needle nose pliers. A rubber disk (the seat washer), below the stem, should be visible. Unscrew the brass screw that holds the seat washer in place to remove it.

3. File the stem before replacing your seat washer with the new one. File down any protruding edges on the stem into which the washer fits.

4. Place the old washer into the stem and screw the brass screw into place.

5. Reassemble the handle and cap. Insert your handle back into the faucet and secure it with the original screws. Place your decorative cap back on top of the handle piece.

Decorate An Americanthemed Dining Room

Decorating an American-themed dining room can show your patriotism.

Decorating a dining room with a theme can be a fun way of expressing yourself. American themes are fairly common for dining rooms and can be achieved in different ways. There is no shortage of items available in American colors, and there are various items that tie in with the country or its history. Decorating a dining room with an American theme can be done with a minimal amount of planning.

Instructions

1. Fill your dining room with furniture made of cherry wood, which can be used in Americana-style decorating.

2. Cover your dining room table with a red, white and blue tablecloth. There are tablecloths available that are colored exactly like an American flag, or you can use a table cloth of one color and accentuate it with cloth napkins colored as the other two.

3. Lay down a floor rug that fits the red, white and blue color-scheme.

4. Place decorative plates down at each place setting. These plates can either fit the American color scheme or they can have images on them that fit an American theme, such as eagles or former president's faces.

5. Hang photos in colored picture frames or hang images from American history, such as paintings of the Founding Fathers or a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

Buy Cheap Gothic Bedroom Decorations

Theater props.

Decorating a bedroom in a particular style or theme can often be frustrating if that theme is outside of the mainstream product lines. Gothic bedrooms are a specific taste and it's not like you can venture into the local mega store and find good decorations. But, with a little ingenuity and effort it is possible to find some excellent decorations at great prices.

Instructions

1. Use the Internet to locate local theater companies and prop shops in the area. (Check on university and junior college groups as well.)

2. Contact the theater companies and ask them when they plan their next prop, set and costume sales. Ask for a list of their shows over the past two years. If they have produced a gothic show recently, it is likely that both costumes and props will be in the sale.

3. Contact prop shops in the area to see if they have a prop sale coming up and what type of items may be listed. Frequently prop shops build items that are preliminary production pieces that don't make the cut. These items are often sold or thrown out.

4. Locate local LARP groups in the area. These are Live Action Role Playing groups and they range from vampire themes to science fiction themes. Many of these groups create props and costumes in the theme of the group, and often pieces are traded or given away as a role is discarded for something new.

5. Create a basic list of the type of items you are most interested in acquiring, but be flexible to items that are similar but not exactly the same. By networking among these groups it is likely you will be directed to other groups and other contacts for specific types of items or in house sales. Often the sales are poorly produced and more a social event and you may have to scrounge around in old boxes and bins.

Typical Japanese Bedrooms

Historically, noble families used tatami mats.

Certain aspects of the Japanese lifestyle may seem a bit strange to foreigners. Differences in their cultural values and traditions reflect in their mannerisms, their cuisines, and even in their living spaces.

Design

Traditional Japanese apartments usually center on the concepts of simplicity and minimalism. For example, most furniture items, such as dressers and night stands, sit closer to the floor than in American bedrooms.

Traditional Furniture

Instead of the European-style beds that Americans are accustomed with, traditional Japanese bedrooms feature futons---flat mattresses placed directly on the floor. These bedding sets fold up for easy storage during the day.

Tatami mats, a traditional form of Japanese flooring, sit beneath the futon or furniture.

When more than one person occupies an apartment, a shoji screen may be set up. Shoji screens are thin, adjustable, paneled walls that fold out to divide a room and provide privacy.

Fun Fact

Japan is also home to capsule hotels. These establishments allow guests to sleep in rooms that are slightly larger than the size of a casket.

Paint Color Ideas For A Bedroom

Bedroom painted in a neutral gold color

There are many things to consider when choosing a wall color for the bedroom. It can seem overwhelming to choose a paint color, especially since there are hundreds of options to choose from. By keeping a few guidelines in mind, choosing a bedroom paint color can be an easy process.

Pale Hues

If you want color on your bedroom walls other than the standard white or off-white, yet you don't want a bright color, a pale or muted hue is your best bet. Blue is popular in bedrooms because it is a calming color--try pale aqua, light sky blue, periwinkle or light aquamarine. Other pale hues to consider include sage, lavender, pale yellow and light rose.

Bright Colors

Choosing bold, bright colors for the bedroom is not recommended because these colors can be overstimulating. But if you are set on having bold-colored walls, make sure that your furniture and decorations aren't as bright so you can maintain balance. If your bedroom is on the smaller size, avoid dark and deep shades.

Some popular bold and bright bedroom paint colors: eggplant, plum, deep red, cobalt blue, bright teal, amethyst and mocha.

Neutrals

Neutral colors are most common in bedrooms, but they don't have to be boring. There are many advantages to using a neutral bedroom paint color, including the ability to easily switch up decor without having to worry about whether the new decor matches your bedroom walls.

Neutral paint colors include tans, light and medium browns, matte and metallic gold, ecru, eggshell, buttery yellows and shades of gray.

Master Bathroom Layout Ideas

In the past, master bathrooms were often simply larger bathrooms with a purely functional purpose: to allow a couple or individual ease of access to bathing and other tasks with more space and privacy than a traditional bathroom. However, today's master bathrooms encompass a range of lavish and luxurious possibilities, and the large size typically found in master bathrooms offers choices in design layout.

Tub Center

For a modern day master bath, the focal idea is luxury. Situate a sumptuous bathtub right in the center of the room. A sunken bath with whirlpool jets, evocative of an in-ground swimming pool, in the center of the room allows you to see all the other areas of the bathroom from the tub and allows you to walk around the tub. Ideally, the master bath should be directly beneath a skylight so that a flow of natural light can pour over you when bathing without sacrificing privacy. Hang an understated television from a corner, so that you can enjoy your favorite TV show or movie while you bathe.

Separate Sinks and Toilet

Two sinks are an absolute necessity in a master bathroom, even if you're the only person who will be using the bathroom. The additional sink adds to the feeling of space. The sinks can connect along the same vanity cabinet or be separated by a cabinet. Situate the sinks near a window so that you have lots of natural light shining on your reflection in the mirror. To keep the tub as the focal point, install one sink on either side of the tub. Install the toilet in its own spacious water closet away from the rest of the features of the master bath for added privacy.

Spa Shower

The spa shower should stand to the right or left of the bath and exceed the expectations of an ordinary shower. Surround the shower with glass to allow in natural light. For added luxury, outfit the shower with multiple jets and a large bench.

Vanity or Exercise Wing

Additional space opposite the shower allows you extra design options. Furnish this area with a vanity table and mirror, placed to take advantage of natural light. Alternatively, place exercise equipment, such as a treadmill or elliptical machine, for quick and private morning workouts.

Ideas For A Bathroom Decorated In Zebra Print

A zebra's graphic markings make a striking decorating statement.

With its high contrast, black and white stripes, zebra print makes a striking decorating statement. However, not all zebra is the same. Depending upon the direction you take, you can decorate a zebra themed bathroom that basic black and white with a punch of color; top to bottom zebra; colorful and bright; or neutral and sophisticated. Use your imagination and creativity to create the zebra bathroom that's just right for you.

Zebra Plus a Bright

Zebra's contrasting black and white stripes provide the perfect backdrop for an eye catching pop of color. For example, in a relatively plain bathroom with white tile and white walls, hang a black and white zebra print shower curtain, then add towels, bath rugs and counter accessories in a single bright color, such as hot pink, purple, red, lime green or orange. Paint wooden cabinets black, if possible. A mirror with a zebra frame or a few zebra print accessories complete the look. This method looks contemporary and fresh, and is practically fail safe. Additionally, it transforms a plain bath very effectively yet easily. Be sure to clear out clutter for this style to look its best.

Going All Out

If you have a very tiny bathroom or a powder room, going all-out zebra is very striking. While this method is too much for a bath of larger size, it can provide a tiny bath with big drama. In this method, have all the walls and ceilings wallpapered in a large-scale zebra print. Use the same print on fabric for the shower curtain and window treatments. Add in some subtle accessories, solid color towels and a dramatic light fixture, such as a crystal chandelier. The light fixture becomes the focal point, and the all-over zebra print adds drama, but doesn't overwhelm because of the room's small size. Painting wooden cabinets black will help you pull off this look.

Colorfully Wild

Zebra print does not have to mean strictly black and white. Shop around and you can find colorful zebra print accessories in every color of the rainbow. Bright zebra prints in orange, hot pink, aqua blue and lime green work especially well in children's bathrooms, and your kids will love the wild colors. Paint the walls a bright color, such as yellow or lime green, then add bright, crazy colored zebra print towels, rugs and accessories. Challenge yourself to decorate the entire bathroom without using any black.

Sophisticated Neutrals

To turn your bathroom into a relaxing, sophisticated retreat, switch gears to neutrals. Just as you can find zebra prints in brights as well as black and white, zebra is also available in subtle, natural shades. Look for zebra bath rugs, towels and accessories in shades of tan, olive, gold, brown and cream. Other earth toned animal prints such as leopard and giraffe can be mixed into this color scheme, if desired, for a safari look.

Change A Bathroom Sink Faucet

Replace old, faulty bathroom sink faucets with new ones.

One way of dealing with an old, leaky faucet is to replace it with a new one. Bathroom sink faucets come in a wide variety of styles and price ranges, which make them a viable option no matter what your budget restraints. When changing a faucet, inspect the current one to ensure that you purchase a replacement that fits your sink. Some faucets come with levers on the back to operate pop-up drains. If your sink does not have a pop-up drain, choose a different faucet or be prepared to make additional changes.

Instructions

1. Go under the bathroom sink and turn off the water supply to the faucet at the shut-off valves. The valve handles turn clockwise to shut off the water. Turn on the faucet handles to drain any remaining water out of the supply lines.

2. Disconnect the pop-up drain assembly if your sink has one. The lever arm that connects to the faucet connects to an arm coming from the sink drain either with a thumb screw or nut and bolt. Unscrew the thumb screw or remove the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the faucet from the pop-up drain assembly.

3. Unscrew the water supply lines from the faucet with a faucet wrench. The supply lines connect to the faucet with a nut or screw fitting like that on a garden hose. Faucet wrenches looks like a pair of jaws on a swivel end. These are the best tool for getting into the tight space between the sink and wall to reach the hose connections.

4. Loosen the nuts securing the faucet to the sink with a wrench. If necessary, use a faucet wrench to loosen the securing nuts. Go to the top of the sink and pull the existing faucet off the sink. Clean the area where the faucet was mounted to ensure a tight seal when installing the new faucet.

5. Insert the new faucet into the holes in the sink. Most common bathroom sink faucets require no assembly or preparation. Go under the sink and thread the retaining nuts over the exposed threads under the faucet until you can no longer turn them by hand. Turn the nuts an additional three-quarters turn with the wrench or faucet wrench.

6. Connect the new pop-up lever arm to the drain arm with the thumbscrew or nut and bolt, if you have a pop-up drain. Thread the water supply lines to the bottom of the faucet until they are hand tight. Turn the water supply connections another three-quarters turn with a wrench. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks around the connections. Tighten as necessary.

Painting The Closet Doors In A Bedroom

The right color has the potential to make a dramatic effect on the look and feel of a room.

Whether you're adding a splash of color to a new home, or looking for an inexpensive way to update the bedroom interior, a fresh coat of paint will improve the look and mood of a room. Functional closet doors can double as a decorative element to any bedroom and when it comes to the bedroom, homeowners have more wiggle room to be creative because only a few close friends will ever see this personal space. The technique used to paint your closet doors depends on the effect you're going for.

Instructions

1. Paint the closet doors with an accent color. Keep in mind that pastels and neutrals make a room feel larger and create a more peaceful space. These colors also match most decorative styles. Bright, happy colors work well in kids' bedrooms, while sensual, deep browns and burgundies are more appropriate for the master bedroom. Match the door with a soft pillow, a comfortable chair, or a luxuriant bedspread in a similar shade to help the closet color blend with the rest of the room.

2. Paint flat closet doors in the kid's bedroom with chalkboard or magnetic paint. Measure the surface of each door and purchase enough paint to coat twice. Stir the bucket of magnetic paint frequently to keep the iron in the mixture from settling to the bottom. Use a regular paint brush to paint side to side and then from top to bottom. Use the same technique to transform a closet door into a chalkboard. Kids can hang pictures, create chalk art and spell words with magnet letters. Who needs paper and crayons?

3. Update paneled closet doors with a combination of two colors. Paint the outside paneling the same color as the bedroom trim, but choose a darker color to paint the inside paneling. This is a two-part project that requires the outer paneling to dry before taping it off to paint the inner paneling. The result is worth the time and patience required. It is best to cover paneled closet doors with a clear commercial sealant to prevent chipping or wear.

4. Stencil closet doors with flowers, cars, letters or any other design if you don't want to commit to an all-over paint job. Stencils are sold in most home improvement stores but savvy decorators can cut their own from a sheet of plastic and a sharp craft knife. Use a damp sponge, a small roller or a stencil brush and stencil paint to mark identical patterns around the side, or cover the entire door for a wallpaper effect.

5. Don't shy from creating a scene or a mural on closet doors in the bedroom. Paint closet doors with a flat, neutral-color paint and using a pencil and an overhead projector in a dimly lit room, trace the outline of rolling waves, a mountain scene, the solar system or any picture that transforms the bedroom into a more personal space. Ask an artistic friend to help fill the outline in with paint.

6. Save time and skip the paint. Apply peel-and-stick artwork to closet doors for an easily removable effect.

Painting Techniques For Bedroom Furniture

Hope chest painted with milk paint and decoupage.

Whether you found a great deal at a yard sale or thrift store or you are just tired of the same old bedroom furniture, it can be quite simple to paint your furniture a new lease on life. There are several inexpensive painting techniques that even a novice can use. The type of finish you choose for a wood project will determine the amount of preparation you must do; metal should be stripped fully. Your painted finish will adhere better to a properly prepared surfac --lightly sand or thoroughly strip depending on your choice of finish.

Enamel

Oil-based enamel paint is thick and opaque. This paint is extremely durable, resists chips and cracks, and maintains vibrant color for many years. Enamel comes in many colors and is highly glossy. Some stores can color match enamel, giving you virtually endless choices. It covers old finishes extremely well and requires only minimal preparation. Lightly sand the surface of your project and enamel can be sprayed, rolled or brushed on. Because it is thick and slow drying, it is generally self leveling. Brush and roller marks usually disappear as enamel dries. Enamel takes a week or more to dry and you must wait until it fully cures to begin using your furniture. Oil based paints require mineral spirits or other chemicals to clean painting tools.

Latex

Water based latex paint is a good choice if you prefer a less glossy finish, or easier cleanup. Latex paint is available in several gloss levels: full gloss, semi-gloss, satin, eggshell and flat and most paint stores can color match latex paints. Because it is water based, clean up is easily done by rinsing painting tools in soap and water. Providing nearly the same opacity of enamel, acrylic can require little preparation other than light sanding. It dries quickly, so it is more prone to brush marks than enamel. Latex paint is a good choice if your furniture is not moved often or subjected to heavy use. It is a bit more likely to suffer from chips, cracks and fading in the sun.

Acrylic and Milk Paint

Specialty paints such as acrylic or milk paint contain a higher concentration of pigment and can be watered down to create a stain like effect. This type of finish is often used when a more rustic finish is desired. Milk paint is available in a limited number of earth-based colors. Many colors of acrylic paint are sold, but usually in small containers. Mixing milk and acrylic paint colors is simple, but color matching is only available by trial and error of mixing of available colors. Both are water based, fast drying and easy to clean up. However, the more translucent the paint, the more preparation must be done. If you wish to use acrylic based or milk paint as a stain, you must fully strip the old finish from your bedroom furniture. Both techniques are extremely fast drying and best applied with a sponge or rag. Specialty finishes can be coated with a protective clear coat for added durability.

Refurbish A White Bedroom Suit

While beautiful, white bedroom furniture does not always age gracefully.

White bedroom furniture is elegant, classic and timeless. Unfortunately, white furniture is susceptible to staining and discoloration, and shows dings and scratches more than darker furniture. If you have a white bedroom set that is showing its age, consider refurbishing rather than replacing it. A little work can give your white bedroom furniture a beautiful new look.

Instructions

1. Remove any hardware attached to the furniture. Sand the exterior surfaces of the furniture with a palm sander, creating a slightly grainy surface.

2. Fill any dents with wood filler, following the manufacturer instructions. Select the lightest-colored wood filler available to make painting easier. Allow the wood filler to dry thoroughly, at least 12 hours.

3. Apply an even coat of a white, glossy, latex spray paint to the furniture. Apply an additional coat once dry if necessary. Remember that multiple thin coats create a cleaner paint job than fewer, heavier coats.

4. Install updated handles and drawer-pulls on your furniture pieces. New, modern hardware is a simple and inexpensive way to bring older furniture up to date.

Design Your Own Bedroom Game

Colored pencils for glorious drawings

Remember when you were young -- single-digit ages -- and woke up early in the morning, before your parents? If your parents were like mine, they valued their sleep, and they asked you to find quiet ways to occupy yourselves before waking them. Our activity of choice was "art lessons," in which a 5-year-old me taught my then 2-year-old brother draw. Or scribble. Activities like these, which require minimal equipment and can entertain young children for long periods, are valuable. If parents can teach their kids ahead of time keep busy in their bedrooms, parents may find themselves actually enjoying some peace and quiet at home. So, parents, teach these games to your kids!

Instructions

Build a fort in your bedroom

1. Clear off a space on the floor, large enough for you (and any other guests in your fort) to sit on.

2. Put a comfy blanket or towel on that now-clear space. This will be the floor of your fort.

3. Use three couch cushions to form three walls in the shape of a U. If you don't have pieces of furniture to lean the cushions against, place blocks or a stack of books behind the cushions to support them.

4. Drape a blanket over the tops of the three cushions: this is the "roof" of your fort.

5. Support your structure: Place heavy objects (books, or anything else) at the corners of the fort to keep the cushions from falling.

6. Bring more cushions or pillows inside to sit on if there's room. Invite your dolls or stuffed animals. You can also drape a second blanket over the front of the fort, to add to the sense of privacy and intrigue. If you do that, make sure to bring a flashlight inside with you.

For the more artistically inclined bedroom dwellers

7. Make artwork to decorate your bedroom walls. You can draw with markers, crayons or colored pencils, and then hang your creation on the wall. Maybe you want to depict the landscape you wish you could see from your window. Maybe pure abstract is more your style. Maybe you want to write your name in brilliantly bright and huge letters. Be careful not to actually draw ON the walls, and have fun.

8. Make drawing a game if you have a friend (or sibling) with you. Each of you draws an animal or human face or head on the top third of a piece of paper. Fold the paper over so that the head no longer shows, but a hint of the neck peeks out from underneath the fold. Pass the paper to your companion (this works with more than two people also). Your companion then draws a torso--of whomever or whatever the imagination desires--on the middle third of the paper, and then again folds over the paper so that only a hint of the torso is showing. The paper gets passed again, and another person draws legs and feet. Unfold the papers and meet the crazy creatures you've concocted.

9. Make paper dolls. Draw people of whatever size you want, and then cut them out. Draw on cardboard or heavier paper if you have it. Next, on more lightweight paper, draw clothing that would "fit" these people; also draw inch-long rectangles at the edge of the clothing, in at least four spots. Cut out the clothing, including the rectangles. These rectangles are tabs that you'll fold to keep the clothing on your dolls.

Dance Party

10. Prepare to release energy. This is only a good idea if you're not trying to stay quiet for any reason.

11. Sing, or play music, and just move your body in whatever way feels right. Repeat the same moves over and over to perfect them, or just let loose and jump around.

12. Jump on your bed--the best dance move of all. But do so at your own risk.

Reduce Germs In A Bathroom

The bathroom is often the first front of the war against germs, and you may need to take daily actions to keep it clean. From mold in the tub caused by an excessively moist environment to bacteria in the toilet, there are many areas to take into consideration. Cleaners are just one way to clean a bathroom. There are also simple habits that can help you keep reduce the amount of germs in your bathroom.

Instructions

1. Run the exhaust fan when showering or bathing. This will help circulate the moist air out of the bathroom after any shower or bath. Moisture from bathing in a shower or bathtub can contribute to the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria. If the bathroom does not have an exhaust fan, consider installing one.

2. Towel dry the tub and shower after bathing. Removing any extra moisture will help reduce the germs in your bathroom.

3. Spray mold and mildew remover on your tub after taking a bath or shower. These cleaners will inhibit the growth of bacteria. Keep the cleaner handy in a bathroom closet so you don't forget to apply it after each shower.

4. Keep antibacterial soap in your soap tray. Leave paper towels out for the drying of hands instead of cloth towels. Germs can be spread from person to person on cloth towels.

5. If you prefer to use cloth towels instead of paper towels, you wash the cloth towels in hot water after each day's use.

6. Use very warm water and soap to wash your hands after using the toilet. Sing the "happy birthday" song twice while soaping your hands, then rinse with warm water. This method ensures you have sufficiently killed the germs on your hands.

7. Flush the toilet with the lid down. Germs can become airborne after flushing.

8. Wipe down high-touch areas with a disinfectant towelette at the conclusion of each day. You may not be able to clean after each use of the bathroom, so setting a schedule of cleaning at the conclusion of each day can be helpful.

9. Use paper cups instead of a ceramic cup for rinsing or drinking in the bathroom. Germs can linger on the lip of the cup and be spread to other users.

What Paint Color Is Soothing For A Bedroom

A bedroom should be a place of relaxation. Choosing the right paint color can have a major impact on the feel of a room and how you feel in it. But before you pick up a paintbrush, check out soothing paint colors that will invoke a sense of tranquility and help ensure a restful night's sleep.

Blue

More than any other color, blue can soothe the senses. But not any hue will do. For the best rest, choose pale shades of paint like robin's egg blue rather than bright shades like aqua or cornflower Blue for your bedroom's walls.

Green

The color of spring, green can both soothe and refresh at once, making it an ideal paint choice for a bedroom. Opt for cool pastels rather than rich, vibrant hues to promote a feeling of peace.

Yellow

Yellow has a reputation for being bright and sunny rather than soothing, but the right shade of yellow paint can have a calming effect. Consider a warm honey-hue or soft, buttery yellow to boost your bedroom's rest factor.

Purple

It is well-known that the scent of lavender induces sleep, but so does the color. Muted tones of purple, whether lavender or lilac, are ideal for a bedroom.

Neutral

Warm, neutral hues can help create a cozy feel. Whether you opt for a sand or beige-colored paint, remember to choose subtle tones for a good night's sleep. You can even use white, just choose a shade like eggshell to keep the look soothing rather than stark.

Lay Bathroom Tile On Plywood

Using plywood as a subfloor creates a strong surface for laying tile.

Plywood is a commonly used subfloor surface for tile because it creates a solid, stable and level platform for the tile to adhere. In most tile-laying situations all you need is the plywood surface to begin laying the tile. However, because bathrooms are high moisture areas, these projects present an obstacle that most rooms do not. The plywood must be protected from the moisture present to avoid damage to the plywood and to prevent the growth of molds and mildew. Adding protection takes additional time, but it adds to the overall lifespan of your bathroom's tiled surface.

Instructions

1. Measure the surface being covered with the tile and divide the surface measurement by the size of the tiles you're using to get the coverage amount needed. Purchase the necessary tiles plus 10 percent to account for breakage and cutting needs.Draw up a plan for the tile placement that uses as many whole tiles as possible, with partial tiles lined against walls that are the least seen from the doorway.

2. Clean the plywood subfloor using a household cleaner suitable for wood surfaces. Remove any staples from the plywood and make sure to nail all nail heads flush with the plywood floor.

3. Check that the floor is level using a level bar. Drag the flat metal bar across the floor, marking any high or low spots for correction. Use a floor sander equipped with 30 grit sandpaper to sand down high levels even with the rest of the floor surface. Fill smaller low areas of the plywood with wood putty spread into the dips with a putty knife. Fill larger dips with a self-leveling compound, spreading the compound with a trowel and allowing it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Remove any dust left over from the leveling process.

4. Remove the baseboard from the walls and set aside. Use a prybar to remove the baseboard, prying it from the walls at the nail locations.

5. Use a notched trowel to spread a layer of asphalt mastic over the plywood surface. Tilt the trowel on edge to raise ridges in the mastic by running the notches across the floor's surface. Wait 30 minutes to allow the mastic to set.

6. Roll a layer of 6-mm polyethylene plastic sheeting over the surface of the mastic. Overlap the sheeting 4 inches at the joints and place a strip of fiberglass tape across the flap end to hold it down. Cut the sheeting to fit using a utility knife. Spread a second layer of mastic over the polyethylene and wait an additional 30 minutes for the mastic to set. The plastic sheeting acts as a protective moisture barrier.

7. Mix a batch of thinset mortar in a bucket, following the manufacturer's instructions. Spread the thinset onto the subfloor in a 4-by-4 foot section starting against the bathroom wall. Use the same spreading process with the mortar that you used with the mastic. Place the tiles on the mortar, leaving a ¼-inch gap around the edge against the wall to allow for expansion of the tiles due to temperature changes. Add tile spacers around the edges of the tiles to create uniform tile rows. Check that the tiles are level with a carpenter's level, and make any corrections necessary by tapping the tiles into place with a rubber mallet. Cut the tiles when necessary using a tile cutter. Allow the mortar to dry for four hours before grouting.

8. Remove the tile spacers and apply the grout to the joints between the tiles. Place the grout onto the tile surface and push the grout into joint lines using a grout float. Clean the excess grout from the tiles using a damp sponge 15 minutes after the grout placement and then wait overnight for the grout to dry. Remove any grout residue from the tiles using a lint-free cloth, and wait 7 to 10 days for the mortar to cure.

9. Brush the tiles and grout with a tile and grout sealant to protect the surface from spills and add to the water resistant nature of the tiles. Allow the sealant to dry overnight before using the tiled surface.

Painting Ideas For Bedroom Walls

Some bedrooms are a place to rest, relax with a book or maybe watch television before sleeping. Others are meant strictly for romance with a special someone. Guest bedrooms should offer a different feeling while still being warm and welcoming. Children's rooms are altogether different and should reflect the personality of the owner. Bedrooms are open to any paint palette imaginable. They are the perfect place to let your decorating psyche run wild with techniques and colors.

Romantic Bedrooms

Romantic bedrooms should have a warm and inviting feel and set the mood. Earthy tones are warm and can contribute a certain sensuality to the bedroom. A tawny gold, like a lion's coat, painted on the walls can then be sponged or ragged to give a more textured and wild look. Or leave it plain to be accented by other pieces in the room. Another possibility is to use stencils to paint a pattern on one wall for visual effect. Rubber stamping is another option to add dimension to a wall or as decorative border. Cheetah spots, diamonds or fleur-de-lis patterns are just a few of the possibilities.

Guest Bedrooms

Guest bedrooms should make your guests feel comfortable and welcome. The paint should reflect a sense of belonging and peacefulness---a place to rest during their journey. A room painted in sky blue with white trim and finished in a nautical theme takes guests on journey of its own. A lavender room with white trimming and adorned with lilacs and other floral accents makes a charming country statement that guests will appreciate. For a more vintage look, the use of dark, stained woodwork will accent cream or beige colored walls, and the room also can be decorated with antique fixtures and furnishings. The paint color combinations should reflect tranquility for this type of bedroom.

Kids' Rooms

Kids' rooms are a great place to go bold with paint colors. Primary colors make great statements when painted on solid walls. Painting each wall a different color, as in the sides of baby blocks, is a fun twist. You can try a lighter color and then paint accents such as balloons drifting upward or use a stencil or rubber stamp kit to add features to the child's liking. Clouds are another popular item to paint on bedroom walls to stimulate young imaginations. If you're skilled with painting, try adding a mural of a scene from favorite book or movie. Painting numbers and letters around the room for a young child can add an educational touch as well as a decorative one.

Diy Pedestal Dining Table

A pedestal table adds a contemporary flair to a dining room.

A pedestal dining table is an elegant and contemporary addition to the dining room. The table's pedestal, located in the center of the bottom of the table, allows for comfortable seating uninterrupted by table legs. Basic carpentry skills are needed to construct the table, which could be stained or primed and painted dark gray or black and finished with acrylic sealer paint. Many lumberyards will cut the wood to the sizes needed for the table's construction if requested.

Instructions

1. Cut four pieces of plywood to measure 24 inches square with the table saw.

2. Connect two pieces together at the edges at a right angle with the wood glue. Clamp the pieces and let the glue dry for two hours. Hammer in brads to secure the connection. Repeat with all squares to create the box-shaped pedestal for the dining table.

3. Cut an 8-foot by 3-foot piece of plywood with the table saw for the dining tabletop.

4. Center the tabletop over the pedestal. Hammer brads through the table top to connect the top to the pedestal. Cover the brads with wood putty, smooth it with a damp finger and let the putty dry for one hour.

5. Sand the entire table thoroughly with the sandpaper. Paint with primer or stain and let dry for two hours.

6. Apply two coats each of acrylic sealer or acrylic paint and sealer, letting each coat dry for two hours.

Painting Ideas For A Little Girl'S Bedroom

Colors are important to a little girl, so the key colors should be chosen by her. Painting the walls her favorite color is the first step to giving a little girl a dream bedroom. With a little extra thought and effort, her bedroom can become much more than just a room. Her room can be transformed into a land of enchantment.

Stencils

Pick a theme for a wall and decorate with stencils. Stencils and brushes can be purchased at crafts stores and discount stores. Let your little girl decide what suits her fancy. Disney characters, kittens, fish or butterflies are only a few of many possibilities. A wall painted in two shades of blue can represent the sky and the ocean. With a bit of freehand artistry, you can paint some rolling waves to distinguish the separation of water to sky. Use a fish stencil to paint beautifully colored fish of different sizes to swim in the sea.

Select some butterflies to fill a wall. Large and small butterflies in a rainbow of colors are sure to please a little girl. Trace and paint a simple tree in a corner or add a row of flowers at the bottom of the wall. The wall will come alive with color and will be a room where she will enjoy spending her time.

Fence

Create a country look with a fence. Cut a template for a picket fence from sturdy cardboard. The dimensions of this can vary, but 3 inches wide and 36 inches long would represent a basic size. The top of the post should be rounded. Once the fence has dried, add some painted flowers and a vine to wrap and wind around a few posts. A small bush with a few flowers is another option to add more color. Dip a sea sponge in some green paint to paint the bush. Add some flowers to the bush with a small sponge or with a stencil brush. Add some birds in the sky and a robin sitting on a fence post.

Clouds

A blue ceiling would look dreamy with a few fluffy clouds. In a small tray, combine 1 cup of white satin paint and ¼ cup of glaze. These proportions can be adjusted according to personal preference. Use a sea sponge to create clouds on the ceiling. Start with the inside of the cloud and work your way out to give a translucent look to the edges of the clouds.

Replace A Basement Bathroom Floor

Replacing the basement bathroom tile floor

Replacing a floor in the basement bathroom may be a challenge for some individuals, especially for those without the proper tools. Before buying expensive new tools for this project, look into alternatives such as renting, borrowing or buying used.

Typically, replacing a tile floor will be more difficult and expensive than replacing a vinyl or linoleum floor.

Instructions

Removing and Replacing a Tile Floor

1. Sledge hammer for breaking up tile floor

Remove the existing tile flooring in the bathroom by chipping away the grout with a hammer and screwdriver or crowbar and lifting the tiles up with the crowbar. If this does not work, try slamming a sledge hammer at the tiles to break them up. Use the method that works best for your situation and be careful not to damage the bathtub or shower if you plan to re-use them.

Most basement sub floors are concrete which is different than other areas of the home which are generally wood. Be sure not to damage the concrete sub floor when breaking up the tiles.

2. Remove all of the debris from the bathroom floor down to the sub floor. You may find black mason paper and wire lath beneath the tiles. Be sure to remove these as well and do not re-use them when installing the new flooring in the basement bathroom.

Many basement bathroom floors are actually tiled directly onto the concrete sub floor and not the wire lath and black mason paper combination.

3. Water damage

Examine your sub floor and its perimeter carefully. This is a good time to look for and repair water damage such as mold and rot. Many basement bathrooms that are not properly ventilated will develop mold.

4. Black mason paper

Install a layer of black mason paper over the entire basement bathroom floor.

5. Wire lath

Staple the wire lath to the black mason paper. This will prevent the tiles from shifting and cracking.

6. Concrete

Pour the concrete over the wire lath and black mason paper. Smooth out the concrete until the concrete is level. The concrete should be about a half inch thick if your floor is completely level and more if not. Allow the concrete to completely dry before moving on to the next step.

7. Wet tile saw

Apply Thinset mortar to the back of the tiles before placing them on the concrete and allow to dry for 24 hours. Any tiles that need to be cut should be cut with a wet tile saw and not a table saw.

For best results, use plastic tile spacers when installing the tiles to keep them evenly spaced. If you are using small floor tiles on a sheet, it is not necessary to use tile spacers because they are already properly spaced.

8. Finished tile floor

Mix the grout mixture according to the instructions on the package and keep it handy in a large bucket.

Apply the grout as instructed on the package and wipe clean with a large damp sponge.

Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours before washing or using the floor.

Removing and Replacing Vinyl or Linoleum Flooring

9. Cut into the vinyl or linoleum with a box cutter down to the sub floor. This will give you a start for lifting up the vinyl or linoleum flooring.

10. Wedge the crowbar under the vinyl or linoleum where you have placed your cut in the floor. Apply force behind the crowbar and lift all of the tiles up.

The floor may be a sticky mess but this should not be a problem if you are replacing the flooring with similar tiles.

11. Apply vinyl tile adhesive to the floor according to the directions on the adhesive product of your choice.

Note: If you are using self stick tiles, there is no need to apply vinyl tile adhesive to the floor. Simply peel the paper off the back of the tile and place where desired.

Vinyl and linoleum may be cut to size using an inexpensive vinyl tile cutter.

12. Apply the tiles to adhesive on the floor exactly where they should be. The adhesive will dry quickly and the tiles will be difficult to manipulate almost immediately.

Vinyl and linoleum may be cut to size using an inexpensive vinyl tile cutter.

Match Colors In A Bedroom

When matching colors in your bedroom, you need to keep balance in mind.

When deciding on a color scheme in a bedroom, you have to make sure that the colors coordinate and that one does not overpower the others. Professional interior designers do not match colors; they choose colors that complement the others in the room. You must think about whether the room will be used simply for sleeping, or also for studying, watching TV or simply relaxing with a cup of hot tea. The final choice should be something that you find pleasing and that will suit your personality and enhance the room decor.

Instructions

1. Utilize paint sample cards, carpet and rug samples and fabric swatches to help you make your selections. If you do not have a fabric swatch from your bedding or curtains, you can easily take along a throw pillow or coordinating knickknack when you shop.

2. Select colors that appeal to you. Choosing no more than three main colors is the general rule of thumb for decorating any room, but you may choose more if you desire. The accent colors you choose for accessories and other decor can be unlimited in variety. It is best to make the main colors harmonize and to use the accent colors to give life to the room. Keep in mind, too many colors may make the room too busy if it is only for sleeping and rest.

3. Check out the main colors against each other. If one color tends to make another disappear or appear dull, maybe it is not the right shade, according to the Home Decorating Ideas website. Note: If one fabric texture is so shiny or vibrant that it makes the other colors seem dull and lifeless, it may be a clue as to whether or not the colors are a good balance for each other.

4. Look at your paint samples, fabric swatches and rug samples in the bedroom at different times during the day. If they look good together in the daylight, they may appear as different shades when using artificial lighting.

5. Utilize a piece in your room that brings all the colors together to create a natural balance. Make sure that a rug, painting, throw or some other piece has all the colors that exist in the room.

6. Make a template to decide if one color will make another seem lost or washed out. If the wall color is to be the focal color in the room, create a large poster board painted with that color. If the bedding takes up about 25 percent of the color focus, designate a quarter of the poster board to that color and continue this method with all the colors in the room to see if they have a natural balance together.

Build A Bathroom Magazine Rack

You can use free-standing towel bar stands if you have the space.

Many people wish there was a place to store reading material in their bathroom. Face it, everyone needs a distraction from the business of their bodily functions from time to time. But, bathrooms are usually small and compact with very little floor space for a traditional magazine rack. The answer is something that hangs on the wall but is shallow enough not to eat up much interior space. A towel bar magazine rack requires minimal space and can be installed by even the most novice do-it-yourselfer.

Instructions

1. Install the magazine rack on a wall or other location with plenty of empty space. Make sure the rack will not block the bathroom door if it opens into the room.

2. Mark the wall where the ends of the first towel bar will be located. Use a level to guide you so the bar will be straight. Drill one toggle anchor into the wall over the first mark until the anchor is flush with the wall.

3. Install the first towel bar mount to the anchor. Make sure the mount fits tightly against the anchor. Sink the second toggle anchor over the mark at the opposite end and install the second towel bar mount.

4. Attach the crosspiece to the mounts to complete the first towel bar. Add one or two more towel bars for additional space for magazines. Frame around the towel racks with picture frame molding for a more substantial look and drape opened magazines over the bars of your new rack.

Size An Egress Window For A Bedroom

To serve as an egress point bedroom windows must meet minimum size specifications.

Adding a bedroom window requires that you plan the window's size to fit local building regulation codes. The window must be large enough to fit a fully equipped fireman, for emergency reasons. To ensure that the egress window fits local safety requirements it must generally satisfy either a minimum height or width standard, as well a total area requirement, depending on which floor the bedroom is located.

Instructions

1. Select a location for the bedroom window. Choose an exterior wall that's at least 68 inches in height to allow for a maximum window sill height of no more than 44 inches from the floor. Additionally, the window itself must be at least 24 inches high.

2. Choose either the minimum height or width of the window. According to the International Residential Code (IRC), an egress window opening must be 24 inches or more in height, and at least 20 inches wide.

3. Calculate the minimum size of the second window dimension. The IRC demands a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet (820.8 square inches) for second story or higher windows, and 5 square feet (720 square inches) for ground floor windows, to allow room for emergency workers to enter the bedroom. Divide the window opening's square inch measurement by the dimension size chosen in Step 2 to determine the window's second measurement. For example, a 20-inch-wide ground floor window must be 36 inches high to serve as an egress window from your bedroom.

Decorate A Romantic Fantasy Bedroom

Decorate your bedroom to induce your innermost romantic fantasy.

Your bedroom can serve as your private retreat to escape to at the end of a long day or for a romantic interlude. Create a fantasy-themed bedroom that sets the mood for romance and sparks your imagination. Choose a romantic fantasy setting that appeals to both of you, whether it's classic Victorian, Venetian, French countryside, Moroccan, a wild jungle or a tropical beach. Let your inhibitions go and put together the bedroom of your fantasies.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls with a soft color or use wallpaper that establishes your romantic fantasy theme. Cover the walls with luxurious-feeling fabric, such as satin or velvet, if changing the wall color isn't enough for your theme. Cream, ivory, taupe and golden-yellows are warm colors that work with a variety of romantic themes in the bedroom.

2. Position your bed in the most prominent place in the bedroom. Large, ornate headboards, four-poster beds or beds with canopies work with many fantasy themes. Add nightstands and a dresser or chest. Keep electronics hidden in an armoire. Complete the room with a chair, ottoman or love seat that plays into your theme, such as a zebra print chair for a wild jungle theme.

3. Include luxury linens that feel good against your skin, such as satin or high thread-count cotton sheets. Overstuffed comforters or soft blankets will keep you warm and comfortable. Choose colors that go with your theme. Lacy, floral-covered designs work best in a Victorian-themed bedroom. Sophisticated, solid-colored bedding in jewel tones work best for a Moroccan-themed bedroom.

4. Hang window coverings that complement your bedding. Sheer white curtains work with a tropical beach theme, just as lacy curtains in black or jewel tones work with a French boudoir.

5. Frame posters or pictures to hang above the bed or opposite the bed. Romantic or sexy images or sculptures should fit into your theme. For example, a silhouette of a couple on the beach at sunset would complement a tropical beach theme. Mirrors and wall sconces are other options that work with most fantasy themes.

6. Accessorize the room with small details that pull it all together. Spread out a multitude of candles and silk rose petals on the dresser, put fresh flowers on the nightstands or keep a tray with wine glasses and an ice bucket on a bench at the foot of your bed. Twist sheer tulle and twinkling lights around the posts or canopy of the bed to add a touch of shimmering light.

What Type Of Rug Is Good Under A Dining Table

Formal area rugs are appropriate for formal dining rooms.

When choosing a rug to go under your dining table, there's no one choice that is best for everyone. While you'll want to choose a rug that fits your room's size, style and color scheme, also consider your lifestyle. Before making a rug purchase, factor in who uses your dining table and for what activities.

Rug Materials

Because people sitting at dining tables might drop food or spill their drinks, use a rug made of a washable material. Man-made fibers such as nylon, acrylic and olefin/polypropylene can withstand a good spot cleaning now and then. Rugs intended for outdoor use are prettier, softer and more colorful than ever and can even be taken outside and hosed off, making them a smart choice for a dining room. Cotton, a natural fiber, is usually washable as well.

Casual Dining Rooms and Breakfast Nooks

If you eat most of your meals at your casual dining table or in your breakfast nook, and especially if you have small children, use an inexpensive, washable rug under your table. If the rug eventually becomes too dirty or you scrub it so often that it begins to fray or wear, you can simply purchase a new one. Additionally, casual dining tables often double as craft or art tables in many homes, so a washable or easily replaceable rug is a real lifesaver if someone spills paint or glue. Braided rugs, outdoor rugs, rag rugs and man-made short-pile rugs are all appropriate choices.

Formal Dining Rooms

When you have gone all-out in decorating your formal dining room or have your heart set on using your prized oriental rug under your gorgeous formal dining table, feel free to do so. If your formal dining room is rarely used or used only occasionally by adults, you may be safe putting down an expensive, delicate or antique rug. However, even adults might drop food or spill their drinks from time to time, especially if they've had a glass of wine too many during a dinner party. If you're confident that your rug will stay clean, you can use just about any rug that works with your room's formal style. However, avoid shag because spilled food and crumbs will become trapped in its deep pile.

Rug Size

Whichever type of rug you choose, get one that is big enough. Professional decorator Susan Welch Heeney, whose work has appeared in national magazines and television shows, recommends using a rug that is large enough to contain all dining table legs and chair legs, even when diners have pushed or pulled the chairs from the table. According to Heeney, an easy rule to follow to determine proper dining rug size is to purchase one that is 4 feet wider and longer than your table.

Decorate A Pink Bathroom

Classy elements like gold plumbing fixtures make a pink bathroom feel sophisticated.

Walking into a bathroom with pink walls can be daunting for any do-it-yourself decorator. Decorating a pink bathroom requires careful thought or you might end up with something that feels too frilly, tacky or childish for your taste. The key to creating a beautiful bathroom in pink is to incorporate subtle elements and balance the frivolity of this lively color with mature colors and materials. Whether you decide to embrace the femininity of pink or try to tone it down, a few simple steps will help you create an attractive look for any pink bathroom.

Instructions

1. Paint trim and other paintable accessories a neutral color like white, beige or taupe for a calming effect. You don't want to compete with the boldness of your pink bathroom, and neutral tones will help temper an otherwise outlandish pink backdrop.

2. Install a neutral-colored shower curtain featuring a lacy design or subtle texture to embrace the femininity of your pink bathroom while still maintaining a sophisticated air. Choose similar styles for bathroom linens and curtains.

3. Add gold plumbing elements and an ornate gold-framed mirror to further add sophistication to your pink bathroom. Gold both adds both warmth to your pink bathroom and a harder, more masculine style with its metallic texture.

4. Install an old-fashioned, footed tub in white or cream, if possible. This style embraces the retro look that pink can invoke while adding maturity to the overall look of your bathroom.

5. Install marble countertops in a light, neutral color to further add maturity to your bathroom's style. Marble has a regal look and will help tame the often too-playful look of pink walls.

6. Purchase black, taupe, or metallic bathroom accessories, such as toothbrush holders and soap dishes. These colors will help balance out the softer look of pink.

Paint Formica Bedroom Furniture

That dated Formica bedroom furniture may still have a lot of life left. If the furniture is sturdy but you're tired of the way it looks, try painting it. It's the economical solution for families on a budget, and it keeps your dresser out of the landfill. Today's bonding primers have made the job as easy as any other painting job. Prime, paint and topcoat, and you have a whole new look in your bedroom.

Instructions

1. Lay down a drop cloth where you intend to paint and place the furniture on top of it to protect your floors. If possible, raise the furniture off the cloth by placing bricks or wood blocks at the corners to make painting the bottom edges easier.

2. Use a drill or screwdriver to remove any hardware from the furniture. Set it aside until the end of the project.

3. Clean the furniture with soap and water to remove any dirt and grime. Dry completely.

4. Use a medium-grit sandpaper to rough up the surface of the Formica. Wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove any dust.

5. Apply a coat of bonding primer with a paintbrush or small roller. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

6. Apply a coat of paint with a brush or small roller. If necessary, let dry and apply a second coat.

7. Apply two coats of polyurethane to protect your new paint finish. In between coats, sand lightly with fine-grit sandpaper.

8. Reattach the hardware with a drill or screwdriver.

Ideas For A Koi Pond Bathroom

Use koi fish for an elegant bathroom theme.

Many people decorate their bathrooms with a nautical, ocean or aquarium theme because of a bathroom's natural association with water. In fact, many bathroom decorations and accents have been created to fit these themes. However, some of those accents look juvenile, primarily created for a children's bathroom.

If you are decorating an adult bathroom and want to follow an aquatic theme, think about koi fish. These elegant Japanese fish are long with flowing fins and appear in many Asian works of art. A koi fish theme for your bathroom could give it an elegant and serene atmosphere.

Walls and Floors

Instead of placing koi pond accents in your bathroom, make your bathroom into a tiled koi pond. Tiles With Style offers novelty tiles depicting lily pads, lotus flowers, water, river stones, turtles and, of course, koi fish. All of these tiles are circles or other organic shapes, adding to their aquatic feel.

Tile the floor of your bathroom with lily pads, blue water tiles and circling golden, white and black koi fish. Place the fish tiles near lily pads, looking as if they are about to nibble on a lotus flower, or clustered together in a corner. Place a turtle near your tub so he appears to be crawling out of the water. You can even tile your walls halfway up with water, lily pads and flowers. Above the tiling, use stencils to add gray-blue cranes and clouds.

Fixtures and Hardware

Regular square tubs and inset sinks don't lend themselves to an organic theme like a koi pond. Instead, choose an oval, porcelain tub with a high back on which you can lean. Use industrial porcelain paints to sponge shades of blue and aqua paint over the tub, inside and out, to mimic ripples of light on the water. You could also use koi fish and lily pad stencils inside the tub to further the illusion that your bathroom is a quiet koi pond.

For your sink, pick something unusual such as a vessel sink. These sink bowls sit on top of the vanity counter rather than being set into them. Industrial glass vessels are strong and come in a myriad of colors and patterns. You can either choose a vessel with koi fish on it or complement the theme with a vessel swirled in color or made to look like river stone. Choose light, brushed silver hardware finishes to go with the theme.

Accessories

You can choose a shower curtain with koi fish printed on it, as well as rugs, cups and soap dishes in the same theme. However, if you already have koi fish featured elsewhere in your bathroom, you would do better to choose accessories that enhance the feeling of being in a pond rather than overcrowding the room with koi.

Find a shower curtain with weeping cherry trees, long green vines or lotus flowers printed on it. Get bath mats in a solid accent color such as pink, light green or cream. Pick towels and washcloths along the same lines, though here you can choose more than one color and mix and match with stripes, as well. If you have very few koi in the room and want to subtly add more, Bellacor offers sets of white or black towels embroidered with golden koi.

For cups and other accessories, choose pieces in a brushed silver tone, a grey river rock finish or pieces printed with animals that live with koi such as turtles and cranes.

Outdoor Rustic Decorating Ideas For A Bedroom

Use materials from the outdoors, like wood, stone and antlers.

Your bedroom should be your escape from everyday stress. If you love nature or are a fan of cozy cabin styles, decorating your bedroom with rustic charm may be just the thing. The rustic decorating style incorporates elements from nature, like natural materials, colors and shapes, to create a space that evokes the outdoors. Rustic styles are versatile. Combine rustic elements with a more modern style for an elegant fusion, or go completely rustic for a country feel no matter where you live.

Furniture

Many different styles of furniture fall under the rustic milieu. Unadorned tree branch beds, simple carved chairs and whitewashed dressers all create a rustic atmosphere. Look for pieces that remind you of the outdoors, either in style or material. Furniture with carved leaves, flowers or pine cones work well. Weathered iron or brass furniture evokes the garden, and will also work well in a rustic bedroom space.

Lighting

If your bedroom doesn't have a lot of natural light, opt for several different light sources rather than a single overhead light. Scattered lighting around the room allows you to modify the level of light, while keeping the ambiance soft and soothing. Look for vintage lamps with shades that diffuse the light. A slightly yellow tinge evokes the fire and sunlight at once.

Colors and Patterns

Go outside for color inspiration. It helps to choose a general color scheme before you start decorating, so the finished product feels put together and whole. Choose earth tones like browns, grays and greens, or, for something brighter, choose yellows and purples, but use them sparingly. Too much bright color will draw attention away from the rustic detail, while deeper, richer colors will accent the wooden furniture and complement the natural palette. Patterns that work well in rustic bedrooms include florals, plaids and animal prints.

Materials

In addition to wood, other natural materials to consider include leather, faux fur, wool, cotton and stone. If you have a fireplace in your room, you are not only lucky, you have a built-in decorative element that will work well in a rustic bedroom. Create a stone hearth for the fireplace or invest in a faux bear rug. Cover your bed in a warm flannel comforter and drape a wool blanket over a chair for especially cold mornings.

The Best Table For Octagonshaped Dining Areas

The table is the heart of the dining room.

The table that will work best in an octagonal-shaped space is the one that fulfills all the necessary functions of the dining room table, as defined by the occupants, while adhering to basic design guidelines. The shape of the dining area determines the shape of the table. The room may be one shape, but the area assigned to dining may be another. An octagon is an eight-sided figure and can fall under the guidelines of either a rectangle/oval or square/round shape. It is helpful to list the typical and maximum number of people to be seated at the table and to know the style of the room before purchasing a dining room table.

Oval Table

If the octagon shape is longer than it is wide, it is considered under the guidelines of a rectangle, and an oval table would be appropriate for the space. An oval is the most formal table shape, and if that is not the mood or style of the dining room, reconsider this shape table. Allow 24 inches of table edge per person while seated.

Rectangular Table

A rectangular-shaped table is also acceptable within an octagonal space that is longer than it is wide if the style is informal. This is the most common of dining room table shapes and is available in a myriad of design styles. Allow one person to be seated at each end of the table and 24 inches for each person per side.

Round Table

An octagonal space that is equal in width and length falls under the purview of round and square shapes. A round dining table can be a difficult table shape to accommodate, because it tends to occupy more square feet per person than rectangular or oval tables. It is considered a highly formal shape. Allow 24 inches for each person around the circumference of the table.

Square Table

A square table would be acceptable in an octagonal space that is equal in width and length. This table shape is informal and uses the most space per person of any table shape. It is becoming more popular in modern-style homes and is often seen built considerably higher than more formal tables, with corresponding chairs of extended height. Allow 24 inches for each person around the perimeter of the table.

Octagonal Table

An octagonal table that mirrors the shape of the space would be acceptable. An octagonal table of rectangular shape tends to be more formal than a basic rectangle or square table. An octagonal table that is more round is less formal than a round or oval table.

Two Tips

Extra leaves are an option for changing the shape of a table. For example, a square table becomes rectangular with leaves added.

For ease of service and clearing, when all the chairs are pulled back there should be at least 3 feet of space between the back of the chairs and any furniture or walls.

Paint A Dining Room In An Older Home

Paint your dining room trim to match its antique wallpaper.

Popular color schemes for interior painting changed with each era. Whether your house is Colonial, Victorian or a Sears kit home from the 1930s, you can bring your older dining room back to its original spirit by choosing historically accurate paint colors. Many paint supply stores have charts with historic paint colors. In addition, online resources can help you research period colors. Don't be afraid of making a bold color choice, as you'll notice that many rooms in older homes used strong colors.

Instructions

1. Move the furniture to the center of the room. Drape a plastic sheet over furnishings. Put down drop cloths to protect your dining room floor.

2. Dust around the edge of the ceiling and walls with a feather duster. Wipe baseboards with a damp sponge.

3. Place a strip of low-tack tape along the edge of the ceiling to protect the walls, cornice or crown molding. Tape the base of your ceiling light fixture or chandelier.

4. Stand on a ladder to apply paint to the edges of the ceiling and around your light fixture with a 3-inch brush. Apply the rest of the ceiling paint with a paint roller attached to an extension pole. Put two coats of paint on the ceiling for full coverage Allow the paint to dry between each coat.

5. Remove the tape from next to the ceiling. Tape around the bottom of the crown molding or cornice with a new strip of tape. Tape along the baseboards and door trim.

6. Paint the edges of the walls with a brush. Fill in the walls with the paint roller. Apply at least two coats of paint. Dark colors may require three coats. Allow the paint to dry between each coat.

7. Remove the tape. Allow the walls to dry overnight.

8. Tape the walls and ceilings next to the trim. Apply two coats of semi-gloss paint to the trim with a 1-inch or 2-inch angled brush, depending on the width of the woodwork. Use more than one color on your cornice to imitate a Victorian paint job.

9. Remove the tape. Wash your brushes with warm water and dishwashing liquid.

Ideas For A Small Victorian Bathroom

Incorporate Victorian design elements into your small bathroom.

The Victorian era came about in the years between 1837 and 1901. "Victorian" is a stylish design which has a traditional feel and provides an elegant touch to your bathroom. Victorian style was originally intended for large bathrooms, but there are several ideas you can incorporate in small bathrooms to achieve a similar Victorian effect. When you are going through the ideas for a small Victorian bathroom, it is important to consider the overall costs that that will go into completing the project. Further, make sure to invest enough time to identify the appropriate features suited to your interests and budget.

Windows

Decorate small windows with heavy silk or velvet curtains for a typical Victorian look. Use fabric that features bright, light natural colors to make the room appear larger.

Bath Tubs

A luxurious claw-foot tub will complete the look; alternately, have a marble tub built-in. Further, equip the tub with modern amenities so it is convenient to use.

Dressing Room

A Victorian bathroom typically features a dressing room, which you can set up at the corner of the room. Create one that best fits your small space, with some clothing storage--either shelves or a wardrobe--and an appropriate-sized vanity.

Sink

To utilize maximum space, install one small sink with a large mirror attached to it. There are several ways you can place the mirror to add to the room’s apparent length. Another option is to buy a sink that is lined with mahogany to maintain the rich culture of the Victorian bathroom.

Color

Be creative when choosing the colors for your Victorian bathroom, as this is one of the major features that defines the look of the space. Per your preference, either use contemporary colors such as deep purple or blue; or copy the wallpapers that were used during the time.

Ceiling

Install a tin ceiling, which was quite popular during the Victorian era. For a well-coordinated look, make sure that you match the color of the ceiling to the design of the walls, vanity and sink, so that the entire bathroom looks well-coordinated.

Floors

For a typically Victorian look, finish the floors either with hardwood or marble flooring.

Design Boys' Bedrooms

Design Boys' Bedrooms

When your baby boy grows up, his bedroom needs to grow with him. Designing his new bedroom can be a fun project for both of you. The possibilities are endless, and when designing a fun room for your special boy, the creative juices will flow. Using colors and accessories, you can instantly transform the nursery or any other room into a kid-approved boys bedroom.

Instructions

1. Choose a theme or color scheme for the room. Inspiration for decorating boys' rooms can come from anywhere. Typically, boys' bedrooms are decorated in shades of blue or green. When deciding on a theme or color scheme for the room, consider his favorite sports teams, cartoons, colors or animals.

2. Paint the room. Painting walls will instantly transform any room. Add a creative touch by painting footballs, baseballs and other equipment for a sports fan, or anything else your boy may be interested in. Before painting be sure to lay down a tarp to protect your flooring.

3. Purchase furniture. Most boys are more concerned with playing than what their furniture looks like, so get the basics. You will typically need a bed, nightstand, bookcase, toy box, dresser or chest, and a small activity table. Keep with the theme of the room. If you are decorating with an outer space theme, look for futuristic styles in furniture.

4. Find coordinating bedding and curtains. Look for colors that fit into your color scheme but contrast with the color of the paint. If you don't see any bedding that you like, try making your own by visiting your local fabric store. Buy NFL-licensed fabric to create custom curtains featuring his favorite team.

5. Accessorize the room. Start with an area rug in the middle of the room to protect the flooring. If you are decorating with a car theme, find a rug with a street pattern; the carpet will double as a play area for his toy cars. Look for lamps, artwork, beanbag chairs and anything else that will fit with the theme of your room.

Do A Traditional Japanesestyle Dining Room

Enjoy dining with friends and family in a Japanese-inspired dining room.

Japanese decor focuses on simplistic elegance. Basic, neutral colors are accented by bold hues. Furnishings are simplistic and serve a definite purpose. Accessories are minimal, yet those that are used reflect the culture and add interest to the space. A Japanese-styled dining room is neat and uncluttered, helping to create a relaxing environment in which to dine. Whether you live in Japan or you want to bring a touch of the Far East into your home, decorating in this style is fairly simple.

Instructions

1. Paint the majority of the walls a neutral color. White, tan or taupe are all colors that will work well in this style dining room. They serve as a neutral backdrop for bold accent colors and artistic accessories. Choose a bold color for an accent wall--red, purple or jade, for instance. This should be applied to the largest wall in the room or the wall that is first seen when you enter.

2. Choose a table that sits low to the floor to create an authentic Japanese dining experience. Surround this low table with decorative pillows, which will be used to sit on. If you prefer using chairs in your dining space, use a taller table and chairs that have straight lines. No matter if you are using a tall or short dining table, it should be simplistic, with straight lines. Black lacquer, cherry wood or bamboo are all materials to consider using.

3. Cover the doors with Japanese-style rice-paper doors. These doors slide open and closed, allowing you to have privacy if so desired. If you don't want the permanence of doors, use Shoji screens instead.

4. Accessorize with Japanese-inspired elements. Hang a Kimono or Samurai swords on the walls. A print of a cherry blossom tree is simple, yet eye-catching, and adds color and interest to the space. Set bamboo place mats on the table. Illuminate the space with Japanese lanterns, which come in a variety of styles, including floor lamps and hanging lamps. Place a bamboo or a fern in a large urn and set it on the floor. Use a potted orchid as a centerpiece on the table.
