Ideas For A Dark Red Luxury Bedroom

Use dark red as an accent color in smaller rooms.

If you're considering a dark red bedroom, think about the practical implications of your decision. Red is a warm color, so will create a cozy, intimate, romantic feel. However, it's also a dark color, so it will make a small room look even smaller and darker. Dark red rooms should have plenty of natural or artifical light to prevent them feeling too claustrophobic. Keep your color palette at the darker end of the red spectrum, as bright reds can have a stimulating, energizing effect that won't give the bedroom a relaxing feel. You can still use dark red in a small room, but use it as an accent color rather than the main theme.

Instructions

Walls

1. Plan how you are going to cover the walls of your red bedroom, as these are the biggest areas of color. For a small room, use a pale, neutral color such as cream, beige or light gray, and feature the dark red in curtains, cushions or bed linen.

2. Paint your walls in dark red paint. If the room is too small to carry this look off, try painting just one wall as a feature. Paint woodwork and ceilings in a crisp white for contrast.

3. Upholster your walls in fabric. This gives a luxurious, intimate feel to the room. Cover the walls in upholstery batting first, using a staple gun, then staple dark red brocade or damask on top. This will give a lightly padded, opulent feel to the room.

Soft Furnishings

4. Make curtains from a rich, dark red fabric such as velvet, brocade or damask. If your room has large windows, dress the top of the window with swags and tails to create a rich look. If your room has little natural light, stick to plain curtains that can be drawn right back and won't block light.

5. Make simple dark red cushions from scraps of curtain fabric. For a subtle, elegant look, make cushion covers from strips of material of the same dark red color but different textures, and trim with red fringe or ribbon.

6. Create a dark red bed spread from a piece of dark red damask. Use a plain, washable lining fabric and sandwich a layer of batting between the two fabrics to give the bed spread structure. Bind the edges with dark red ribbon or binding tape.

Accent Colors

7. Use accent colors in your room. For smaller, darker rooms, or for a less intense effect, use dark red as a highlight color. Make plain, neutral curtains and sew on a dark red false leading edge, or use red tie backs.

8. Scatter dark red cushions over a plain bedspread. Make each cushion a different shape, such as square, round or bolster-shaped, and use a different fabric and different shade for each one.

9. Place a dark red lampshade on a bedside lamp to give the light a warm, cozy glow. Use dark red glass vases to hold red roses or artifical flowers, and place small candles in dark red holders.

Decorate A Bedroom With A String Of Mini Lights

Hang mini lights in your bedroom for a fun or romantic vibe.

Strings of mini lights used to be reserved for Christmas decorations. Specialty lights are now made to complement certain themes, such as flowers or butterflies, and can be used to accessorize the decor in your bedroom. The color, style and size of the lights should complement the decor in the room. Lights can add a romantic, festive or light mood to your bedroom, depending on the lights you use and how you use them.

Instructions

1. Drape the string of mini lights across the top of a bookshelf, thick frame, dresser or mirror if you want to be able to remove the lights quickly without leaving behind any damage. Draping the lights across the top of a larger piece will highlight that piece.

2. Wrap the light string around the bed posts, a tree, curtain rod or coat rack. Use a small piece of tape at the highest point to keep the string of lights in place on a vertical piece.

3. Use small hooks, tacks, nails or tape to hold the string of lights in place on a wall or other flat surface. Avoid driving a tack or nail through the wires, as that creates a fire hazard. Hang the lights over the bed or use it to outline a shelf, window, the headboard or any other part of the room you want to highlight. Hang the lights in a pattern, such as spelling out a name or making a heart shape, if you want something more personal.

Make My Bedroom Into My Home Office

Whether you are moving your existing bedroom into another room or turning your boudoir into a double-duty space, a home office in a bedroom is a space-defying feat many homeowners and renters take on. The key to making it work is clearly defining your spaces and keeping it all neat and organized.

Instructions

1. Turn the bed into a sofa. If the room is still going to function as your bedroom as well as your office, turn the bed so that it sits lengthwise against the wall and place large pillows against the back to act as a sofa back. Get a neutral-colored comforter to cover the bed and make daily.

2. Move any bureaus you have from your bedroom into your new bedroom or into the closet. A functional home office eliminates distractions, so excess furniture should be removed to make room for the office furnishings.

3. Designate a place for your desk. You'll need an average-size desk for your computer or laptop as well as your printer and other accessories. Choose a place near an outlet as well as your cable or phone hookup for Internet access.

4. Get a comfortable office chair. Since this is a home office, choose leather or a more fashionable office chair rather than the standard black utilitarian office chair, which may not fit into your home decor.

5. Purchase some bookshelves. Bookshelves can help keep you organized and act as valuable desktop space to hold printers or phones. Place software and data storage devices on shelves to keep them safe and dust free.

6. Use an area rug to define your space. Especially important for a usable bedroom, an area rug can add both style and a visual boundary for your home office. Place the area rug under your desk space and desk chair.

7. Provide task lighting. Use a desk lamp on your workspace to provide appropriate lighting without adding bulk to the room. Use a table lamp near the bed area to give the room a soft glow for guests or for your own restful evenings.

8. Hang a message center near or over the desk area to hold your calendars, bill due dates, receipts and anything else you want to keep close at hand or in the forefront of your mind.

Reupholster Cushioned Dining Room Chairs

Take plain white cushions and add pizzazz with prints, stripes or bold colors.

If the thought of reupholstering dining room chairs seems intimidating, pull up the dining room chairs and put away your fears. If you can pull a piece of fabric and press the top of a staple gun, you are more than half way there. Take on those chairs in grandma's attic, or take advantage of chairs in stores where the price is right -- but the cushions are wrong. Give your dining room chairs a brand new lease on life just by reupholstering the seat cushions.

Instructions

1. Measure the width, length and depth for each chair. Use this formula to determine how much fabric you will need. Add three times the depth to the length and the width. For example, if the existing cushion is 16 inches wide, 14 inches long and 2 inches deep you would add 6 inches to the width and 6 inches to the depth, and you would need a piece of fabric that is 22 inches wide, and 20 inches long for each chair. The extra inches will accommodate the depth and give you enough fabric to wrap around the sides and tuck the ends underneath the cushion for a professional finish.

2. Turn the chair on its side on the floor and use your screwdriver to remove the screws holding the seat cushion to the chair. Set the screws in a safe place or tape them to the sides of the chair so you won't lose them.

3. Keep the project simple by keeping the existing fabric on the chairs. Simply layer the new fabric over the old fabric.

4. Spread the new upholstery fabric on a tabletop or flat surface with the wrong side facing you. Center the cushion on top of the fabric with bottom of the seat cushion facing you.

5. Pull the fabric over the bottom of the cushion. Staple the fabric in the center on the left side, then staple the center on the right side. Follow by stapling at the center of the top, and then staple the bottom. Pull the fabric over the bottom of the cushion. Staple the fabric in the center on the left side, then staple the center on the right side. Follow by stapling at the center of the top, and then staple the bottom.

6. Tackle the corners -- which is the hardest part -- by thinking of the fabric as a piece of gift wrap paper. Fold and crease the corners of the fabric vertically, as if you're wrapping a gift box. Start with the top and staple the corner into place. Repeat the same process with the corner on the opposite side of the one you just finished. Do the same with the corners on the sides. Finish with the corners on the left and right by layering the fabric over the stapled corners for the top and bottom, and then making your final staples for the left and right sides of the cushion.

7. Turn over the cushion, and take a minute to admire your wonderful work. Put the cushion onto the chair. Take your screwdriver and screw the cushions back onto the chair frame.

Make My Bedroom A Nautical Room

A nautical bedroom is clean and simple, like a ship.

Whether you already live near the sea, or just wish you did, a nautical-themed bedroom can be a calming place to rest after a long day. Just how far you go with the nautical theme depends on you. Portholes can be cut in walls and a bed made into the shape of a boat. For a child, these are wonderful additions, but may be inappropriate for an adult. This theme could be over the top with nautical items or simple and sophisticated, depending on your taste.

Instructions

1. Paint your walls a color that fits with your idea of what a nautical theme should be. Simple white walls with dark blue trim evokes a simpler nautical theme, while painting the walls a darker blue and trimming with white makes a room more dramatic.

2. Create a border around the room with stencils or wallpaper borders. Find or cut out stencils that suit your nautical theme, such as sailboats, ship wheels, a compass or a lighthouse. Hold or tape the stencils in place with painter's tape and use latex or acrylic paints to fill in the stencil images. When the stencil is removed, the shape will remain. Continue around the room to create a border. A wallpaper border sticks to the wall with paste or by peeling and sticking the border to the wall.

3. Purchase sheets and a blanket or quilt with ships, ship wheels or navigational equipment on them and place them on your bed.

4. Hang light fixtures that look like the types found on older ships. Brass or silver lantern-like fixtures contribute to the nautical theme.

5. Frame maps of coastal regions and hang them on the walls, along with other accessories like ship wheels, mounted fish, fishing poles, cargo netting or shelves with model ships. Bait shops, outdoor outfitters, home decor stores, and sporting goods stores have real maps and other fishing and boating gear ideal for decorating.

6. Place area rugs made out of dried grasses, like raffia or sisal, around the room to add to the coastal or nautical theme.

7. Display a favorite nautical quote on your wall, either framed or painted directly on the wall.

8. Use wood furniture in darker stains to evoke the feeling of being on an old yacht or ship.

Create Dining Nook With Half Walls

Add a small dining area off the kitchen for casual meals.

Today's dining rooms do not need to be formal, stuffy affairs. Most modern families are more casual than in years past, and prefer a cozy, small area where they can gather for meals. You can create a snug dining nook in the kitchen by using half-walls to create the illusion of a separate room, but still giving you a sense of openness.

Instructions

1. Mark off the area to be converted into the dining nook. Make a line on the existing wall where the new wall will attach. Determine the height you want the wall to be, taking into consideration the height of your dining room table and adding 8 to 12 inches to the measurement. Cut 2-by-4s to size.

2. Build the wall, using two 2-by-4s back to back at each end, doubling the thickness on the ends of the wall for greater strength. Space the remaining 2-by-4s 16 inches apart. Nail these 2-by-4s to an upper plate and a bottom plate, made from 2-by-4s, to form a rectangular box. Stand the frame upright and nail it securely to the floor and the wall.

3. Cut sheets of drywall to fit the new wall. Screw pieces of drywall into the 2-by-4s, placing screws every 12 inches or so, drilling into the 2-by-4 set every 16 inches. Tape the seams of the drywall with drywall tape. Apply joint compound with a trowel to cover the tape and the drywall screws. Sand the joint compound after it dries, and apply two more coats.

4. Sand the joints smooth. Prime and paint the walls.

5. Using simple wood moldings that lay flat to the wall, create the illusion of wainscoting by creating rectangles or squares on the new wall, along with the other walls in the new area. Use a miter box to cut the angles, and glue them on the wall a bit at a time. Nail the pieces in place with finish nails. This will tie the walls together and make it look like a room that is original to the house.

6. Nail up a traditional chair rail molding at the top edge of the half-wall using finish nails, and continue the chair rail around the rest of the room. Miter the molding in the corners for a seamless look. Nail a 1-by-6 board across the top of the half-wall, cutting it one inch longer than the wall to create a ledge which will overhang the wall by one inch on each side and the end. Add more molding around the ledge if you want.

7. Finish by priming and painting all the wood trim.

Built A Master Bedroom Suite

Built a Master Bedroom Suite

It's easiest to design a master bedroom suite when a home is under construction. If your house is already built, you can create a master bedroom area by enlarging an existing bedroom, tearing out a wall between two bedrooms or finding additional space in a hallway. Another option is to build onto your house to expand an existing bedroom. Design the master bedroom suite to include a queen- or king-size bed. Add a large closet or walk-in closet and a bath area. If you have sufficient space, you can include a home office space or sitting area.

Instructions

1. Measure the space you will utilize for the master suite. Sketch the floor plan in detail. In the beginning stages, define how you will access water lines and install drain lines for the bath area. Map out how you will run ductwork and vents for central air and heating. Tear out any walls needed to enlarge the space and begin the framing process of the area. Make room for double doors coming into the suite if you have enough hallway space. Ask an expert to supervise re-framing of load-bearing walls. These walls literally hold up the weight of your house.

2. Use nails and an electric screwdriver to secure the framework for your new space. Run wiring for electrical outlets and light fixtures while wood framing is exposed. Frame closet space and a built-in bookcase wall unit, if desired. Run wiring for closet lighting or recessed lighting in the wall unit. Insulate any outside perimeter walls in the master suite. Add double insulation in ceiling areas.

3. When you have all framework, wiring and ductwork in place, start to install drywall. Drywall all wall areas in the bedroom, closet areas and bathroom. Finish with joint compound and sand the walls for painting. Install trim and wood molding in appropriate areas. Trim the ceiling's perimeter with crown molding. Hang the bedroom door and closet doors. Paint walls, and stain or paint all woodwork and trim. Hook up all light fixtures and electrical outlets.

4. Place bathroom fixtures such as a shower, tub or commode. Install fittings and caulk around fixtures. Install mirrors or wall cabinetry in the vanity area. If your budget is tight, you can always install a larger shower or tub at a later date.

5. Lay wooden flooring, tile or carpet in the master suite. Install baseboard materials in all sections, including the interior of the closet areas. You might wish to use inexpensive carpet versus wood or tile flooring in closet areas to save money. Consider installing an entire wall of mirror tiles to expand the room visually if you don't have a lot of windows.

Decorate A Dining Room Table With Nutcrackers

Nutcrackers are a functional tool created to crack nuts, but many people collect them as a decorative accessory, especially during the holidays. This is due in part to the Nutcracker ballet, which is traditionally performed at Christmastime in cities throughout the world. Many decorative nutcrackers are created to look like characters from the ballet. Others are not from the ballet but usually have a holiday or Christmas theme to them, such as one shaped like a Santa Claus. Use your nutcracker collection to decorate your dining room table this holiday season.

Instructions

1. Lay a table runner down the center of your dining room table. This will create a defined area for your nutcrackers.

2. Wrap up some small boxes in Christmas or holiday-themed wrapping paper. Set them up along the table runner in a random pattern. For example, a short box, then an empty space, then a taller box, then another empty space.

3. Place a three- or two-tiered cupcake holder or dessert holder in the center of the table runner. Tie a ribbon to the top of it. This will be your centerpiece.

4. Arrange your nutcrackers on the table. Place some on top of the wrapped boxes and others directly on the table runner. Alternate sizes, but group them in small groups rather than spreading them out evenly. For example, place a small one on a box, then a taller one directly on the table runner beside the box. Then leave the runner bare until you get to the next box.

5. Fill the cupcake holder with nutcrackers. Fill in the spaces between the nutcrackers on the cupcake holder with pine cones or shiny red, green, gold or silver round Christmas tree ornaments.

Good Colors For Bedrooms

Turn any boring room into a relaxing one.

After a while, you may feel it's time to update your bedroom. A fresh coat of paint and new accessories are a quick and inexpensive way to renovate your bedroom. One thing to keep in mind is that your bedroom should act like a sanctuary where you can rejuvenate yourself. According to Decorating Secrets, there are certain colors you should consider for your sanctuary.

Wall Colors

Before picking out what color you want, think about how you want your room to "feel." Decorator Secrets suggests sticking with neutrals that reflect a soothing feeling. For an earthy, relaxing feel, paint your walls brown--even a dark brown. If you're not ready for a dark brown room, choose sand or beige colors. These colors exhibit a comforting feeling. For a spa-like feel, choose a green color. Green walls will make you feel comfortable and at ease. However, if you do your makeup in your bedroom, be aware that some shades of green will make your skin tone--especially those with cool tones--look unflattering. For a bright, sunny feel, paint your room a light, butter yellow color. This color will not be too bright, but it will still make you feel warm and happy.

Bedspreads/Comforters

Add some color in a neutral room with a new bedspread or comforter. If your room is brown, select bright blue or green bedding to add color and a relaxing feeling. Use your bedding to tone down color, as well. For a sunny yellow room, choose cream or winter white bedding--along with window curtains--to make the room less bright. For rooms painted greens and blues, select brown or cream bedding to add a soft hint of color. To add some more fun into your room, choose patterned bedding.

Accessories

Use accessories to pull in color and tone it down. For brown and neutral rooms, consider hanging a neutral piece of art with pops of red in it. Replace your lampshade with a colored one, and change your frames to a lighter or darker color brown. For colored rooms, consider reprinting your favorite pictures to black and white, then placing them in a glossy black frame. This will add interest in your room without making it too "loud." Add some drama to a pale yellow room with pops of burgundy. Select a burgundy lampshade and other burgundy accessories. This will add color to the room and complement the light yellow nicely.

Choose The Window Size For A Bedroom

Bedrooms with privacy and beautiful views need large windows.

All bedrooms must include a window in order to qualify as a bedroom. They provide sunlight, views and ventilation. The size of the window varies according to people's taste. Some windows take up an entire wall, while other are small and provide privacy. Take into consideration the inside and outside elements before determining the right size for your window.

Instructions

1. Determine how big and small the window can be. Consult with your builder or architect to see how large a window is possible to create a maximum. Find out what the regulations are on minimum window sizes. Building codes usually require bedroom windows to be large enough to provide escape if necessary as well as sufficient ventilation. Find out what your local requirements are.

2. Consider what direction the window will face. Windows that face different directions will get varying amounts of sun during the day. A window that faces west will get a lot of afternoon sun and will heat up the room considerably. In hot climates, this may be a detraction but in cooler climates, a plus. North windows get diluted sunlight, south windows get more direct sun and east facing windows get morning sun.

3. Factor in the proximity to your neighbors. If you have a lot of neighbors within close proximity, you may want a smaller window that gives you more privacy. If you are in an open, private area, large windows may be ideal.

Dining Room Chair Rail Ideas

Chair rails add elegance to dining rooms.

Chair rails installed in dining rooms add interest and depth to the room. Chair rails are placed specifically along the wall where chairs bump into the walls. As a result, their purpose, besides an enhanced look of a room, to protect walls from bumps.

Types of Chair Rails

Chair rails are moldings made of wood, plastic or gypsum. They come in assorted sizes, patterns and shapes. Prices range from rather inexpensive to very expensive. Typically, the greater the detail is in the chair rail, the greater the cost will be. Any type of chair rail installed on a wall, generally 32 to 36 inches from the floor, breaks up the monotony of a large wall. Even the simplest pattern of chair rail adds depth and attention to a room.

Two Paint Colors

A popular idea for chair rails in a dining room is to paint the walls two complementary colors. One color is below the chair rail, the other color above it, adding depth and design to a room. A dark color is typically painted below the rail and a lighter color above the rail. Any variety of colors will work, as long as the colors match.

Wall Frames

The use of wall frames with a chair rail provides an elegant look. After a chair rail is installed, wall frames are typically placed on the walls below the rail. The wall frames are painted or stained the same color as the chair rail. Wall frames are pieces of trim wood built in the shape of a picture frame. Wall frames can also be placed above the chair rail. Every room is different based on the size and shape. Careful planning is involved with installing wall frames.

Chair Rails used with Paneling

Paneling, also known as wainscoting, is a popular way to complete a dining room with a chair rail. Paneling, which comes in assorted colors and styles, is placed from the floor trim up to the chair rail, adding a graceful appearance.

Make Dining Room Drapes

Making dining room drapes is a great way to add style, flair and warmth to the room where you entertain guests and eat your meals. Depending on the style of your dining room, you will have several options when deciding what kinds of drapes to make and what they will look like. Generally speaking, dining rooms have a bit of a formal air, so you will probably want to select a heavyweight fabric in a color that matches or complements your existing décor. Regardless of the fabric you select, spending time and money to make dining room drapes is an investment that will pay off for years to come.

Instructions

1. Decide where you want to place your drapery rod. For formal drapes, you will want to hang the rod close to the ceiling. For more casual drapes, you will want to hang the rod on or just above your window frame.

2. Measure from the location of the drapery rod to where you wish the drapes to hang. Measure up to 1/2 an inch before the floor for formal drapes. For more casual drapes, you may wish to measure to the window sill or just below.

3. Add 4.5 inches to the measurement you have just taken, 3 inches for the top seam allowance and 1 1/2 inches for the bottom hem.

4. Measure the width of the curtain rod you will be using. In order to create the illusion of a longer window, extend the rod so that it hangs a few inches beyond the window frame on either side. Measure the width of the rod from left to right and add 3 inches for the side hem.

5. Multiply the measurement you arrived at in Step 4 by 1.5 to 3, depending on the desired fullness of your drapes. Multiplying the width measurement by 3 will yield very full and luxurious drapes, whereas multiplying it by a smaller number will yield a flatter drape.

6. Take the measurements to a fabric store and have them cut fabric panels for you in the correct dimensions. If you are getting lining for your curtains, have it cut 3 inches narrower and 3 inches shorter than your curtain fabric.

7. Lay the curtain fabric on the table, "wrong side" up. If you are using lining, lay it on the table, right side up, so both "wrong sides" of the fabric are pressed together.

8. Fold the curtain fabric over a 1 1/2-inch seam on the sides and bottom onto either the lining or the "wrong side" of the curtain fabric.

9. Secure the seam with straight pins, and then sew along all three sides.

10. Fold the top part of the curtain panel down 1/2 an inch either onto the lining or onto the "wrong" side of the fabric.

11. Secure this first seam with straight pins and then sew.

12. Fold the seam down an additional 3 inches and sew a straight line along that first hem, in order to make the pocket for the rod.

13. Repeat Steps 7 through 12 to make the rest of the fabric panels.

14. Slip the panels onto the rods when you are ready to hang them.

Ideas For Beautiful Bedrooms

Neutral shades always work well in the bedroom.

Your bedroom is your private sanctuary where you can rest and rejuvenate your body for the day ahead. Create a space that's all your own by featuring your favorite colors, fabrics and decor. A stunning bedroom is often romantic with silk bedding, lacy curtains and other accents such as an old-fashioned wall mounted mirror or potpourri filled vases.

Pastels Paired with Dark Accents

Blue and purple are both soothing colors that help you to feel relaxed. Paint your walls light purple with blue accents such as small blue flowers along the border. Leave your ceiling white. Choose fabrics that are a few shades darker than the walls to add drama. Deep plum bedding stands out against light pastel purple walls. Several types of furniture styles work well this color scheme. You can select rich cherry wood furnishings and a canopy bed for a more romantic look. However, if you would like a country cottage look, choose white furniture. Decorate your walls with framed photos to match the color of wood in the room.

Simple and Elegant

If you prefer a more earthy look, choose neutral shades such as beige or light peach. Paint all the walls one neutral color and leave the ceiling white. Install white crown molding along the border of the room. Choose dark cherry wood furniture to contrast with the walls and hang pictures with wood frames that match your furniture selection. Dark rich bedding in colors such as burgundy or forest green work well in this type of room. Select dark brown or plum curtains to hang on the windows as well.

Large Accent Wall

Select one wall in the room as your accent wall to paint a dark color such as forest green or burgundy. Leave the other walls white. Align your bed in the middle of your accent wall and select three romantic paintings of roses, flowers or landscapes to feature on the wall. Place the framed pictures in a row together on the wall above the bed. Decorate the other walls with framed family photos or wall mounted mirrors.

Decorating with Red

Red is a dramatic color, but it looks stylish in bedrooms when paired with lighter colors. If you love red, choose one large wall to paint red. Use light colored white wooden frames to hang pictures on the wall and select lighter bedding such as white or even pink. Pink and red go nicely together, but too much of one color is overwhelming.

What Are The Ada Requirements For A Bathroom With A Shower

In 1990, the United States government passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, commonly known as ADA. ADA sets forth guidelines for architects, engineers and contractors on the design and construction of public buildings, requiring equal access for those with disabilities. One of the areas that ADA encompasses is the accessibility of bathrooms, including those with showers. A bathroom with a shower must meet special ADA requirements in order to be usable and safe for someone with a disability.

Size and Clearance

An ADA-compliant shower stall must be a minimum of 36 inches by 36 inches in size. It is required to have 48 inches by 36 inches of clear space in front of the shower opening to allow for a side approach and transfer from a wheelchair to the shower seat. If no shower seat is provided, then the shower stall shall be 60 inches in width and 30 inches deep. In this case, the clearance in front of the shower opening must be 60 inches by 36 inches to allow for a wheelchair to roll into the shower.

Grab Bars and Seats

ADA requires a bathroom with a shower to have grab bars. Grab bars must be mounted at a position between 33 inches and 36 inches above the finished floor. In a stall containing a shower seat, the grab bars shall be located on the wall opposite the seat and on the wall adjacent to the seat. The grab bars in a roll-in shower shall be located on all three walls. Continuous grab bars are allowed. The shower seat shall be 18 inches above the finished floor and must extend the whole length of the wall.

Controls

ADA-compliant shower stall controls shall be mounted between 38 inches and 48 inches above the finished floor. In stalls that have the shower seat, the controls shall be mounted on the wall opposite the seat and mounted no more than 18 inches from the opening side. In stalls that allow for a wheelchair to roll into the shower, the controls shall be mounted no more than 27 inches from the opening side. The controls must be operable with one hand and not require any tight grabbing, pinching or twisting of the wrist. ADA specifies that no more than five foot-pounds of force be required to activate the controls.

Make Dining Chair Pads

Cushions to cover your dining room chairs are quick and simple to make.

The dining room is a natural place to gather and is often the setting for get-togethers with family and friends. When a group of people is sitting for a long time, however, a hard dining room chair can become uncomfortable. Making cushions for your dining room chairs is a quick and simple project that adds comfort to your seating area and can also update and refresh your dining room's d cor.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of the seat of your dining room chair. Add 1 inch to each of the measurements and write them down.

2. Wash and dry your fabric according to the manufacturer's instructions. Iron the fabric to prepare it for cutting and remove any wrinkles.

3. Fold your fabric in half, right sides together. Cut out two rectangles from the fabric, using the measurements you wrote down.

4. Cut four 6-inch lengths of grosgrain ribbon. Cut one end of each piece of ribbon at a 45-degree angle.

5. Place one rectangle right side up. Place two pieces of the ribbon one inch in from the upper corners on each top edge. Line up the straight edges of the ribbon with the top edge of the fabric and pin the ribbon in place. These ribbons will tie the cushion to your chair.

6. Place the remaining rectangle right-side-down on top of the rectangle with the ribbons. Line up all the edges and corners and pin around all four sides. Leave a turning opening of about five inches unpinned on the top edge of the cushion between the two ribbon ties.

7. Sew around the pinned edges with a straight stitch and a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Start sewing on one side of the turning opening and end at the opposite side of the turning opening. Start and end your seam with a backstitch of three to four stitches.

8. Turn your dining cushion right-side-out through the turning opening. Push out the corners with your fingers or the eraser end of a pencil. Pull the ribbon ties away from the body of the cushion.

9. Turn the raw edges of the turning opening in toward the wrong side of the fabric so that the folded edges are even with the sewn edges of the cushion. Iron your folds into place.

10. Iron the cushion on both sides to remove wrinkles.

11. Place the stuffing, which is optimally a cotton-polyester fiberfill blend, in the cushion through the turning opening. Use a handful of stuffing at a time and fill it until the entire cushion has a layer of about 3 inches of stuffing. Adjust the stuffing so it lies smoothly in the cushion without any lumps.

12. Pin the turning opening closed. Sew the opening closed with a straight stitch and a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Tie your cushion onto your dining chair.

'40s Attic Bedrooms

The Craftsman home's half-story attic could be converted into bedrooms.

In the 1940s the design of homes, a small footprint and compact rooms provided a comfortable space for suburban living. Many homes were purchased out of a catalog and delivered to the site with all the necessary components. The homes were often one-and-a-half stories and the unfinished attic could be converted into a store room or additional bedrooms.

Half-story Conversion

Homeowners in the 1940s found that do-it-yourself was a necessity, as their families outgrew the main floor. The attic became one or two bedrooms. The steep angle of the Cape Cod or Tudor roof made for narrow attic bedrooms, while the lesser pitch of the bungalow roof allowed for wider rooms with lower ceilings. Attic rooms often had built-in armoires and dresser storage or created closet space by walling off the steeply angled sides of the rooms and putting up rods for clothing storage.

Windows in Attic Bedrooms

In the 1940s, the Cape Cod- and Tudor-style houses often had dormer windows which could let light and air into attic rooms. Dormers could also provide structure for window seats. Bungalow-style attics sometimes had dormer or skylight windows. While these windows added an attractive touch to the decor, they rarely helped with ventilation, because most of them did not open. In fact, in the summer, the sun's heat streamed through the windows and the room's heat escaped through the windows in the winter.

Heating and Cooling

Attics in the 1940s had vent windows at each end, which could be enlarged and made into windows that could open and let flow through ventilation cool and refresh the space. In the winter, a south-facing window or skylight brought extra heat into the room. The popularity of the sleeping porch had faded by the 1940s, but sometimes was still incorporated in an attic conversion -- especially in the South because of its airy comfort on hot summer nights.

Furniture and Decor

Bedroom furniture of the era was relatively small compared to today's sizes, so it fit reasonably well. For example, the largest mattress size commonly available in that era was the double (now called full) size. Nightstands were rarely wider than the width of a magazine. Dressers were likely to be tall rather than wide. The furniture styles featured Art Deco-influenced curves with deep satin finishes. Paint colors were rich and floral wallpaper patterns were popular.

Romantic Ways To Set Up A Bedroom Scene

Turning your bedroom into a romantic haven doesn't mean you have to pay an interior designer top dollar. You can find all the items you need to make your bedroom sensual at affordable prices, with materials at your local superstore or department store. From bedding to decorative accessories, you can pull inspiration from design magazines, interior design shows, or even pictures you find on the Internet. Start by clearing the clutter, add a little bit of imagination and unleash the experience of all five senses in your bedroom.

Bedding and Furniture

The first thing you notice when you enter a bedroom is the bedding and the furniture. To create a romantic bedroom scene, work with your existing furniture to save money, but pay special attention to your bedding. Colors that evoke a sense of passion and romance are white, gold, ivory, red, soft pinks and blues, lilac and even a sleek blend of gray and black with colorful accents. Neutral, warm and cool tones can all be effective color choices.

Luxuriate in silky or satin bedding, or opt for sheets with a high thread count. They provide comfort and warmth for romantic days and nights.

Lighting

Good lighting is a key element to any romantic bedroom scene. Bright lights don't evoke the same feeling as soft, dim lights. Achieve dim lighting by purchasing specialty lamps or simply have an electrician install a dimmer to your bedroom lighting system. Or save money by turning the lights off and illuminate the room with soft candle light.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy studies show that people are affected and react to different scents. Scents like vanilla, lavender and musk can help create a romantic bedroom scene. Purchase scented candles or essential oils paired with diffusers. Be sure to pick scents that are soft and inviting; harsh scents will interrupt the romantic theme you're trying to achieve.

Rose Petals

Sprinkle the bed and floor with soft rose petals. Get them fresh at your local florist, supermarket or superstore. Besides adding visual décor, fresh rose petals will provide a natural, romantic scent for your room. If you prefer to just enjoy the visual appeal of rose petals, you can also purchase artificial petals online or at your local craft store in a variety of colors.

Music

Nothing says romance like tranquil music softly playing. Pick up a couple of compact discs with sensual Latin tunes, jazz or classical music. You could even opt for a compact disc filled with love songs or gentle nature sounds. Soft sounds are sure to subtly add to your romantic bedroom scene.

Information Antique Maple Bedroom Furniture

The maple tree was abundant in colonial America.

Antique maple bedroom furniture was largely made in colonial America during the 17th and early 18th centuries. Maple was abundant then and colonialists saw the advantage of working with it. Maple is strong, resistant to splitting, smooth when polished and has a decorative grain. The earliest maple bedroom furniture has simple lines as well as the charm of country-styled furniture. Antiques and reproductions add a vintage note to today's interiors.

History

Early colonialists used oak for making their first pieces of bedroom furniture but soon changed to the more advantageous maple. Until 1725, when mahogany was introduced, maple was the main wood used for furniture-making. Along with walnut and mahogany, it continued to be used in woodworking and, by the early 19th century, was the most popular wood among furniture makers in the country. Among the types of bedroom furniture made were four-poster beds, chests, bureaus and wardrobes.

Curly Maple

The patterns in curly maple

There are several types of maples used in bedroom furniture. One of the best-known is curly or tiger maple. The grain has a prominent, wavy pattern and, because of it, is considered a "figured" wood. When the wood is sawed across the grain, a flame-like strip is visible. The intensity, consistency and size of these wavy strips determines the furniture's quality. It is important that the finish preserves the grain.

Bird's-eye Maple

Bird's-eye maple is the rarest and most expensive maple used in bedroom furniture. It is considered a luxury in the timber world. The name comes from the pattern in the wood, which looks like the small eye of a bird. Over time, the outer wood usually develops a rose color, while the inner section is cream-colored or white. The wood of each piece of bird's-eye furniture is unique, which makes it very desirable.

Antiques

Antique maple bedroom furniture should be purchased with care. Maple furniture made before 1860 was not machine-made. Verifying authenticity should include a check of the dovetail joints, the small triangular units affixing sections. If handcrafted, the joints will be a little uneven. Furniture finish should be shellac; lacquer and varnish were used after the mid-1800s. Sections with great details, like bedposts and spindles, should also be a little uneven. Only machine-made pieces are perfect.

Reproductions

Fine reproductions are available at much less cost than antiques. Today, some high-end manufacturers prefer bird's-eye maple for bedroom pieces. Reproductions usually include the changes and modifications, like increased bed height, that have occurred in furniture-making over the centuries.

Creative Ways Of Decorating A Bedroom

Creative Ways of Decorating a Bedroom

Bedroom decor creates a special refuge from the cares of the day. Making a creative statement in decorating begins with an idea. Choose a theme, or the desired look for the bedroom. For a timeless effect, select a versatile theme that you can individualize. Consider the mood you prefer, such as romantic or tranquil. Make notes of your color preferences and look through magazines and bedroom photos online for inspiration. Start with the basic furniture and bedding and add accessories to put the whole look together.

Tropical

Decorate your bedroom as a tropical paradise. Take inspiration from Hawaii, Indonesia or the South Pacific. A few key items will transform any bedroom into an island retreat. Put in a bamboo or wood bed with a large headboard. Consider adding a bamboo dressing screen and bamboo or reed blinds. Put in louvered closet doors and vintage lamps on dimmers, and install netting or sheers from a ceiling ring over the bed. Add tropical plants to give the room a lush and sensual feel. Bromeliads and anthuriums with their bright long-lasting flowers work well. Choose bedding in natural fibers such as linen or cotton. Place two extra large square pillows at the head of the bed for backrests. Use shades of green, gold and tan with red, scarlet or orange accessories.

Hollywood

Make your own Hollywood glamor boudoir. Put in a round bed or dress up a regular bed with a mirrored headboard. Add a vanity dresser with lighted mirrors and a vanity bench with a satin or velvet cushion. Dress the bed with satin sheets, a satin or velvet comforter cover, lots of round satin or velvet throw pillows, and chrome and glass night tables or black nightstands. Put in track lighting and some classic Hollywood posters or contemporary paintings in bold colors. Add a sheer fabric room screen for a dressing area or to hide exercise or home office equipment. Set a tall clear glass vase of red rose buds on the dresser. Put three white pillar candles on chrome holders on each nightstand. Go with black, white, silver, and red or pink for the color scheme.

Country Cottage

Transform your bedroom into a country cottage getaway. Create an escape to a simpler time. Choose a sleigh bed or four-poster and decorate it with a handmade quilt. Add pillow shams in a coordinating color. Put a quilt rack or old wooden chest at the end of the bed. Set matching vintage lamps on solid wooden nightstands. Use handmade doilies and vases of fresh or dried flowers. Add vintage accessories, such as hurricane lamps and a basin and pitcher set. Put braided rugs on each side of the bed. Make up the bed with eyelet-edged sheets, plain cotton, or flannel for the winter. Keep the colors soft and natural: blues, greens, yellows, white, cream, brown, or pink.

Victorian Style Bathrooms

Victorian Style Bathrooms

Victorian style bathrooms were originated during the Victorian era, from 1837 to 1901. Since then, many designers have created bathrooms based on the Victorian design and style. By implementing the original Victorian design with modern amenities, one can re-create a Victorian bathroom that meets the needs of today's homeowner.

Function

Victorian style bathrooms have been re-created or remodeled to embody a look reminiscent of the era in which wealthy homeowners designed the room around a sense of class using rich woods and cast iron accents. In Victorian style bathrooms, one can wash, bathe and use the toilet in a setting much like that of the late 1800s. For those who live in a Victorian home, remodeling the bathroom to the exact design can take months of renovation by refinishing existing wood structures and locating bathtubs, sinks, hardware, flooring and mirrors reminiscent of the era.

Features

Most Victorian style bathrooms feature Victorian inspired colors on the walls, such as burgundy, deep purples and blues, while some may choose replicated wallpaper from the era, such as large floral prints highlighted with gold or silver tone stripes. Tin ceilings, which were also popular during the era, can be used in a bathroom matching most colors in the decor. Claw-foot tubs were essential to Victorians, and these tubs can be refurbished or bought with modern amenities, including a detachable, handheld showerhead. Sinks were lined in mahogany cabinetry establishing the rich style. Floors were either finished in hardwood or featured imported marble floors.

Identification

Identifying a Victorian style bathroom involves looking for features in the bathroom and decor that was also important in the era, such as vases filled with English roses, romance books and sconces with lit candles on the walls. Victorians often collected prints of animals of the era, such as horses and dogs. Photographs of important Victorian women including Queen Victoria or the woman of the household often adorned bathrooms and added a touch of femininity. Perfume bottles, body dusters and hairbrushes with silver handles may accent a vanity.

Size

Victorian homes were designed with high ceilings often up to 14 feet tall; this allowed for tall windows and the ability to decorate with heavy velvet and silk curtains. Bathrooms needed to be big enough to fit a large claw-foot tub or marble built-in tub. A small vanity and dressing area was also tucked away in the corners of most Victorian bathrooms. Sinks remained small in the era as most Victorian women utilized the vanity and its mirror as a way of getting ready after taking a bath.

Considerations

Consider the cost involved in renovating a Victorian bathroom. This type of bathroom can cost substantially more than a traditional style bathroom because of the fact that the tub, flooring, vanity and plumbing are renovated to function with modern technology. Searching for functional Victorian bathroom items can be time-consuming as many are available through special order only. Rejuvenation.com offers a large selection of replicated items that would fit well into a Victorian style bathroom.

Music Themes For A Bedroom

If you love music, decorate your bedroom to reflect your musical tastes.

Set the tone for a musically-themed bedroom by using harmonious decorations that are in tune with each other. Themes pertaining to music are as varied as the styles of music. Matching the theme to your room requires a careful assessment of your preferred musical style. Country, rock, jazz and classical are just a handful of the musical styles on which to base your room's theme. Choosing your style and using decorative elements tied to it will make your finished bedroom sing.

Country

Country music has its niche particularly in rural areas around the country. Use a rural setting as inspiration for your bedroom décor. Lean a wooden guitar in a corner with a cowboy hat on top of the neck. If you will not be playing the guitar, purchase one from a thrift store. Decorate the walls with a large mural made of album covers from country music CDs or purchase old vinyl covers from a thrift store. Another way to decorate a country music bedroom wall is to cover an accent wall with a mural depicting a country setting, such as horses in a pasture, a farm or a rodeo. Look for murals made of wallpaper if you are not adept at painting.

Rock

Bring back the days of rock and roll in your room with your decorations. Choose decorations to match the era of rock you prefer. For instance, if you lean toward the songs of the 1950s, hang a poodle skirt or leather jacket from your wall with a poster of a classic muscle car from the era. Attach cardboard cut-outs of electric guitars on your walls if you are a fan of modern rock. Look for a keyboard or guitar-shaped throw rug or carpet runner from a specialty home décor store to add to the themed look.

Jazz

Create a cool environment for the enjoyment of the smooth sounds of jazz music. Decorate your room to look like a coffeehouse where jazz and poetry combine in perfect harmony. Decorate with dark colors on the walls and carpet. Add a cafe table and chairs in a corner. Hang posters depicting saxophones or famous jazz musicians, for example.

Classical

For a classical music-lover, decorate with a focus on the instruments used in an orchestra. Paint the walls white, and create a musical staff on one wall with five parallel lines of black paint. Draw musical notes on the staff, and don't forget the clef and meter at the start of the line. Copy out a favored line of music for the mural to customize the design. Do not just haphazardly paint on musical notes because a music-lover will be able to identify whether or not they are real notes or not. Cover the floor in front of the bed with a carpet runner featuring a keyboard design. Continue the black-and-white theme throughout the room and add plaster busts of famous classical musicians from an art store on the window ledge or bookshelves.

Decorate A Bathroom With A Tropical Theme

Tropical bathrooms are refreshing.

If you need inspiration to redecorate your bathroom, look to the tropics for colorful, bright ideas. Tropical baths are airy, refreshing and simple to pull together once you know what items you need. When you're finished with this project, you'll want to spend as much spare time as you can soaking in the tub and basking in the cool island vibes.

Instructions

1. Select a theme. When it comes to the topics, you can go with the bold colors from exotic islands or with the soothing shades of the beach. Another option is a palm tree or tropical flower theme.

2. Choose colors that enhance your theme. Choose one primary color that will dominate the bathroom, and pick two or three secondary colors to coordinate with it. If your theme is tropical flowers, you might want to use red, yellow, blue and green in your bathroom. Ocean colors include sea foam green, blue and white. For a palm tree theme, use a green tan and beige combination.

3. Select a shower curtain that not only coordinates with your bathroom d cor but also adds interest. If your theme is palm trees, look for a textured curtain. In an ocean-themed bathroom, go with a curtain that is light and moves freely like the ocean waves.

4. Use natural elements to create a relaxed atmosphere in your bathroom. Ideas include shelving units, hampers and baskets made of wicker and rattan. Look for rosewood and teak for frames and armoires. White wicker gives your bathroom a boost, and worn furnishings enhance the casual tropical mood.

5. Use window treatments that let as much natural light in as possible. You may want to go with sheers for a soft look or roman blinds, which will give you more privacy. Shudders are another option with a quick and easy way to get shade and security.

6. Hang wallpaper to enhance your tropical look. Tropical patterns, such as birds, flowers, palm leaves and shells will automatically lift any bathroom. You can also choose textured wallpaper, such as linen or grass cloth.

7. Accessorize to give your bathroom that finishing touch. Look for bamboo boxes and woven baskets to store items. Decanters and soap dishes are another way to add style. Personalize your style by using theme-related hardware, such as shells and starfish.

Stop A Leaky Bathroom Faucet

Fix a leaky faucet yourself.

A leaky bathroom faucet is annoying, and plumbers are expensive. Most leaks are the result of one or two faulty seals that you can easily replace. Local hardware stores should carry all the parts you need to fix a leaky bathroom faucet. Bathtub or sink faucets generally begin leaking because of worn out O-rings or damaged stems, both of which are simple to fix. With a few basic tools, you can stop that dripping faucet without calling a plumber.

Instructions

Replacing O-Rings

1. The shut-off valve may look similar to this.

Find the shut-off valve for the bathroom water. This should be beneath your sink or behind an access panel for your bathtub. Look at the water lines in either of these locations, and locate a small handle on both the hot water and cold water lines. Turn each handle as far as you can to the right to shut them off. If your home is older or a shut-off valve is not present, you will have to turn the water off at the meter.

2. Drains are magnets for screws and small parts.

Place a stopper in the drain on your sink or tub. The parts you are working with are tiny in some cases, and you do not want to worsen the situation by dropping one down the drain.

3. Locate the center screw to remove the outer faucet handle. A screw head should be visible in the top center of the plastic handle; if you cannot see it, a center beauty cap covers it. For T-handle faucets, the retaining screw is in the end of the handle. Remove the beauty cap, unscrew this tiny screw and pull the handle straight up. Some may require gentle prying with a flathead screwdriver to dislodge, but most will not. T-handle faucets will come off the same way, straight up.

4. Assortment of washers and seals

Run the tip of the screwdriver gently around the base of the faucet stem to pry up a rubber washer/seal, or the O-ring.

5. Stretch the replacement ring gently over the faucet stem to position it at the base. This should be a tight fit, but not so tight that it stretches your O-ring to the point of breakage. If it looks as though the rubber ring could snap at any moment, try a larger ring.

6. Reattach your faucet handles, and check for leaks. Turn on the water at the shut-off valve, and watch for drips. Turn the faucet handles on full force, and then shut them off again for a full test of your new seals. If you still have a leakage problem, you need to replace the faucet stems.

Stem Replacement

7. Shut off the water to the faucet, and remove the handles. Beneath the handles you will see the stem, the apparatus that your handle sits on that opens and closes the water flow.

8. Unscrew the faucet stems with your C wrench. These should be tight, so it may take a little effort to loosen them. It is best to replace both stems even if you are sure it is only the one side leaking, because most of the time when one gets weak, the other is not far behind.

9. Locate a rubber seal or seat beneath the stem, and remove it with a small flathead screwdriver.

10. Replace the seal below the stem, if present, by firmly but gently pressing it into the small recess. You may need to use the tip of your screwdriver to get it into place correctly. Seals will vary slightly depending on manufacturer, but as a rule they should fit snugly in place and, in the case of an O-ring, be barely visible.

11. Wrap a small amount of plumbers tape around the screw threads of the stem. Be very careful to not get the tape on the very end of the stem, because this can interfere with proper function of the faucet. Line the stems up straight, and tighten them firmly but gently first with your fingers and then with your wrench.

12. Reattach the faucet handle covers, and tighten the retaining screw snugly. Turn the water back on, and check for leaks. If at this point you still have a leaky faucet, the problem could be deeper in the faucet and requires replacement of the entire piece or the services of a professional plumber.

Dining Room Center Pieces

A combination of candles and baby's breath makes a decorative Christmas centerpiece.

A centerpiece is a colorful or artistic way to bring attention to your dining room table while celebrating the current holiday or season. You can put together your own centerpiece by purchasing some of your favorite items from the floral shop or craft store, or buy a signature piece for the middle of your table that is sure to draw impressive looks each time guests enter the dining room.

Candles

Arranging candles of varying sizes in the center of the table is visually appealing, particularly when lit for a fancy dinner. Neutral shades like tan, white or medium brown are attractive on a table of virtually any color while certain candle hues are indicative of a certain season, like cranberry red and pumpkin orange for fall or vivid shades of orange and yellow for spring or summer. You can accent the candles by laying a wreath of synthetic leaves or wines around them or placing small bundles of flowers in between the candles.

Fruit

Edible dining room centerpieces are both aesthetically pleasing and a clever way to occupy your guests while you put the finishing touches on dinner. For instance, fill a dark brown or brunt orange wooden bowl with almonds, red and green apples and dried fruits like pears and cranberries. The fruit colors will complement the bowl hue well, and you can keep replacements on hand so you can replenish the bowl to maintain the decorative appearance of the centerpiece after your loved ones have indulged. Or you can use fruit on a non-edible fashion to make the dining room table the center of attention. Slice grapefruit or oranges, and place them along the sides of a glass vase. Fill the vase with fresh herbs like basil and sprigs of thyme and water, and place flowers that match the citrus hues in the vase, like orange tulips or yellow roses.

Baskets and Vases

Select a vase or basket with a clever or original look for your dining room table centerpiece to create a modern feel. For instance, a large triangular vase in a deep purple or red hue in the center of a black table can serve as the only pop of color in the room. Or you can select a diamond-shaped basket woven in varying shades of brown and red and filled with potpourri for a fragrant and textured addition to the dining room.

Photos

Whether for a family member's birthday or a holiday that is important to your loved ones, a photo centerpiece can be both artistic and thoughtful. For instance, house black and white pictures of you and your spouse at your wedding, sharing a kiss or welcoming your children into the world in silver frames to commemorate 25 years of marriage. Accent the circle of photos with a wreath of irises, the bloom that symbolizes the anniversary. Or place three or four photos in a line across the center of the table showcasing your child's first steps, first day of school or accomplishments in sports as a birthday tribute. Choose frames in the family members favorite color, and garnish the photo group with flower petal confetti to further customize the centerpiece.

Decorating Ideas For A Bathroom With Blue Countertops

You can tile in varying shades of blue to the walls and make your counter the centerpice of an all blue bathroom.

In a small space like a bathroom, a single feature can dramatically affect the look of the room as a whole. If your bathroom features blue countertops, they likely draw your eye as soon as you enter the space. However, you can choose from several different decorating designs for the room depending on the look that you prefer, so you can work with the blue to enhance your bathroom's appearance.

Play Up the Blue

If you like the color of your blue countertops and want to use it as inspiration for the entire bathroom, you can decorate the space in various shades of blue. Choose a blue that is a shade lighter or darker than the counter for the wall's paint or tile. You can opt for wooden or laminate flooring to break up the blue or use a blue tile that matches the walls for the floor. Mosaic tile that incorporates several shades of blue is an ideal option for tying the room together. For the shower curtain, window treatments and towels, you can go darker with a navy or indigo blue or choose a mid-tone shade that is closer to the wall and countertop color.

Downplay the Blue

In some cases, a colored countertop can give your bathroom a dated look. If your blue bathroom counter is giving you flashbacks to the '70s, decorate the space to de-emphasize its appearance. Avoid using blue in the rest of the room because it will only call attention to the countertop. Instead, opt for neutral tones to counteract the blue. You can use a soft tan shade on the walls and floor, and add accessories in rich shades of brown. For a more glamorous look, try a light gray on the walls and incorporate charcoal and silver shades in the shower curtain, wall treatments and towels to give the space a more modern feel.

Go Dramatic

You can use your blue countertop in a more dramatically styled bathroom as well. Opt for a crisp white paint shade for the walls. If you are tiling part of the wall, incorporate black accent tiles for a sharply contrasting look. Carry this pattern to the shower surround, and add black-and-white checkerboard tile to the floor as well. You can add additional blue elements to the room through the window treatments and towels, but pair them with white and black accessories as well. To tie the room together, look for a patterned shower curtain that uses all three colors.

Warm It Up

Blue may be a cool color, but warm tones can actually complement your counter. Depending on how dark your blue countertop is, you may opt for peach or terra cotta colored walls, because orange is opposite blue on color wheel. Instead of white, which may be too stark, use a cream or ivory tile for the shower surround to give the space a softer feel. If you want to add dimension to the bathroom's look, incorporate a neutral shade such as tan to balance out the cool and warm tones. Add blue towels, window treatments and other accessories to give the room a unified look.

Organize A Small Bedroom With Little Space

Stackable boxes are decorative and useful.

A small bedroom can be a decorating challenge but not if you have the right information. The trick to decorating a small bedroom is keeping the room balanced with the objects in it and making the most of the space in the room. Once you figure out maximize space and use furnishings, you can create a space that is comfortable and functional.

Instructions

1. Keep all objects to scale in the bedroom. Avoid large pieces of furniture with ornate inlays and large, overstuffed pillows. Choose furnishings with clean lines that don't take up more room than they need to (think Scandinavian). An ironwork bed is a good choice for a small bedroom because the bed frame takes up very little space. Choose a lower bed, as this will look smaller visually.

2. Select an appropriate-sized bed. Choose the smallest size bed that will comfortably sleep those who will be using it. Place the bed close to a wall to prevent the room from feeling smaller than it is. Leave enough room for walking around the bed.

3. Decorate only with items you need. Don't bring additional furnishings into the room that will only cause clutter. You will need to feel comfortable in your bedroom and part of this feeling is knowing you have enough room to move.

4. Choose double-duty items to make the most of space in your bedroom. Decorative or stackable baskets and boxes conceal clutter and they look neat.

5. Maximize all the spaces in your bedroom. Look high and low for opportunities to utilize space. Use the area under your bed for storing seasonal clothing. Install bookshelves and storage units on your walls to give you a storage area without taking up floor space.

6. Use nesting tables to get the most out of your floor space. These tables are convenient for using as nightstands because you can tuck them away when not needed.

Do It Yourself Bedroom Closet Organizers

Being able to locate clothing items quickly helps to start the day off right.

Closet organizers come in many types and styles, yet they often are relatively expensive to purchase.Organization in closets doesn't have to involve custom-made shelving units or accessories. Homeowners who enjoy do-it-yourself projects can organize their own closet inexpensively by using a few common-sense tips and supplies. Organization in this area makes it less difficult to find an item when you need it, thus starting your day off with less stress.

Instructions

Utilizing Vertical Spaces

1. Store seasonal clothing, shoes and other items in clear plastic storage boxes. They stack efficiently on top of each other, therefore utilizing the vertical space in your closet area.

2. Label the end of each storage box with a self-adhesive label listing the items in the container. You can also use an index card that you tape on the end of the box. Another idea is to take a picture of each pair of shoes and place it on the end of the box. This prevents scurrying around to find the mate when you are in a rush. The picture enables you to identify the necessary shoes quickly.

3. Stack the boxes on the floor area. Put items that are used rarely or seasonally on the bottom of the stack, such as winter sweaters or Christmas ornaments.

4. Pile containers with items you use frequently on the top of the stacks. This prevents you from having to move boxes around to get to an item you use often.

Organizing the Clothing

5. Remove all the clothing from your closet. Donate clothing you haven't worn in a year. Repair clothing that requires a new hem or a loose button. Discard any stained, ripped or worn items.

6. Hang the clothing items back into your closet one at a time. Begin with a category of clothing, such as short-sleeved shirts.

7. Place all the short-sleeved items in your closet, arranging all the like colors together. For instance, hang all the white shirts together, the navy blue, beige, black, pastel colors and brights. Doing this enables you to quickly grab what you need for an occasion.

8. Hang all the pants together in the same fashion, then begin with the skirts, jackets and other apparel. Doing this creates a professional-looking and organized closet. Putting together an outfit that coordinates will be a speedy process.

Decorate A Bedroom For Summer

Summer is such a fun season --- why not think about it morning and night? You can do that easily by decorating your bedroom with a warm-weather theme. Start with the main element --- the bed --- and have a blast selecting the three S's: sheets, shams and spread. Then proceed to lighting and other accessories, and enjoy sweet summertime dreams.

Instructions

Decorate a Bedroom for Summer

1. Brighten your bed with the colors and patterns of summer. You can find cheerful stripes and floral prints in seasonal tones such as popcorn yellow and honeysuckle pink. A nautical theme is also fun --- think seashells, fish and sailboats. Don't go overboard with patterns though --- for instance, use solid sheets with a floral sham and bedspread.

2. Introduce accessories that echo the theme of your bedding. If your spread is decorated with a beach scene, add a fun shell-covered box or bowl to your bedside table. If you use floral sheets, pick up that look with a vase of flowers in complimentary colors.

3. Buy decorative lighting with a summer motif. Enliven your windows with string lights in the shape of flamingos, margarita glasses or palm trees. Hang paper lanterns in summery colors and patterns.

4. Put candles in summer-themed candleholders. You can pick from all kinds of motifs, including flip flops, surfboards, palm trees and sailboats. The candlelight will add a romantic touch, and the container will make you chuckle.

Make A Zen Bedroom

Simplicity is key to Zen decorating.

If you're looking for a soothing way to redo your bedroom, consider going Zen. The Zen approach dedicates itself to simplicity and comfort. Neutral colors, calming space and a minimal amount of stuff is at the heart of this style. The trick to creating a Zen-like bedroom is focusing on the best way to utilize space. When you're finished, your bedroom will be one of the most peaceful places in your home.

Instructions

1. Pick a neutral color scheme for your Zen inspired bedroom. One primary color and two accent colors produce a nice, balanced effect. Off-white, beige, tan, black, brown and gray create a tranquil atmosphere.

2. Paint the walls a light color to promote an open, spacious atmosphere. Light beige, off-white or pale gray are pleasing options that work with other colors in the spectrum easily.

3. Buy streamlined furniture with simple designs. Simplicity means clean lines and very little ornamentation. Most Asian and modern furniture works well in the Zen bedroom because there is very little decoration on it. Use only what you need. Keep your room limited to the basic necessities, such as a bed, armoire, chair and nightstand.

4. Use flooring that is easy to maintain, such as polished wood or tile. Use a comfortable rug that brings the colors of your room together.

5. Use natural textures and designs. Water fountains, a bamboo table or a glass vase filled with rocks create a pleasing aesthetic. Harmonize with nature by adding natural items, such as rice paper, wicker, grass cloth and stone.

6. Hang window treatments that complement the Zen look and feel. Bamboo shades are a simple and effective option. Linen, sheer and muslin curtains are another. Avoid busy patterns and look for soft, solid colors that blend with the other colors in your room.

7. Choose elegant and useful accessories to keep your bedroom clutter-free. Install floating shelves on your walls and keep a smooth stone bowl handy to catch stray items like keys and change.

8. Arrange your bedroom with ease and balance in mind. Your bedroom should be easy to move through, and balanced objects should be in the room. Put the bed across from the dresser and a chair and a table in each corner.

9. Add potted plants to your bedroom to bring a touch of nature inside.

Make A Wooden Bench Seat For A Dining Table

Benches provide easy access to the table.

Adding a bench to a dining room table gives you more sitting space without making the room seem cluttered with more large, clumsy chairs. Benches may be stored easily under the table or they could be used as seating under a window when not being used for dinners. Finding wood that matches your existing dining room set makes the bench look as if it were purchased with the rest of the pieces.

Instructions

1. Buy wood that matches your table if at all possible. Look at the table design and decide if you will design the bench to match. A table made of planks assembled together requires more work but follows the same principals as a one-piece table top.

2. Measure the length of the table. You may want the bench to match this length or be slightly smaller. For example, a table 60-inches long should have a bench between 55- and 60-inches long.

3. Measure and cut the bench according to your desired length to match the table. The width of the bench should be 12 inches, which gives enough space for people to sit comfortably on the bench.

4. Measure and cut four bench legs from the 4-by-4 posts. There should be 18-inches from the floor to the top of the bench. If your plank is one-inch thick, this means your posts legs need to be 17-inches long each.

5. Measure and mark post holds in the bench top. Put two holes for each post. The first hole is one inch from each corner with a second drill hole two inches from each corner.

6. Match drill holes in the leg posts, setting the legs so they are flush with the edges.

7. Secure the legs in place with four-inch screws. Place wood putty in the screw holes, making the surface smooth by running your finger over the hole.

8. Apply a stain that matches the rest of your dining room furniture. Wipe the stain on with a clean towel. The more coats of stain, the darker the color becomes.

Decorate A Guest Bedroom For Christmas

Santa adds holiday cheer to a guest room.

This year let Christmas guests stay in your seasonally decorated guest room. A Christmas-inspired guest room is more personal than hotel digs. Prepare your extra room with decorative touches that represent the joyous Christmas holiday.

Instructions

1. Cover the bed with a seasonally inspired Christmas comforter set. It might have a Santa Claus or snowflake theme. The comforter should be fluffy and comfortable for snuggling.

2. Hang a curtain rod with Christmas-inspired curtains. Your curtains should match your comforter set. You could also use a decorative curtain rod with metal Christmas snowflakes on each end.

3. Throw some shaggy white accent rugs around the room. Be sure to place one on the side of the bed your guest will be getting into and sliding out of. This will keep feet nice and warm.

4. Place a small Christmas tree on top of a dresser and decorate with ornaments your guest will enjoy. The tree should have a few lights that match the colors of the room.

5. Set a basket of scented lotions and hand towels on the nightstand for your guests to use. They could have Christmas scents. Also add a small jar of hard candy to the night stand.

6. Hang Christmas ornaments from an overhead ceiling fan or light kit. Use some fishing wire to hang them instead of Christmas tree hooks.

7. Set a trio of scented votive Christmas candles on an empty tabletop or side table.

Small Dining Room Designs & Ideas

A properly designed small dining room gives the appearance of being larger than it is.

A small dining room may have its limitations for seating capacity, but when designed and decorated properly, this room can appear larger than it is. Make use of the space you have and design a room you can be proud of. Then entertain your guests with ease.

Table/Chairs

A small dining room usually requires a small table and chairs. A long, narrow table and smaller chairs or a small round table gives your dining area a larger feel. If your dining room has a lot of foot traffic but not many people sitting at the table at one time, a table with drop leaves or extensions that can be collapsed a majority of the time may work well. If your dining room opens to a larger adjacent room, extend your table into these rooms when entertaining, if necessary. Expandable coffee tables that can be raised and covered with one long tablecloth create additional seating areas if needed. Pushing your table against one wall until needed may also help create more walking area. Set only a few chairs around the table for daily use and store extras in other parts of the house. Bold fabric chairs can display a dramatic focal point in a neutral-toned room. For a cozy, kitchenette-type atmosphere, a bench table and chairs or corner table will offer more walking room with adequate seating space.

Walls

Lighter colors normally give the appearance of a larger room. Accenting one wall with darker paint or wallpaper adds some drama without making the room feel cramped. Dark walls may work in a small dining area if it will mainly be used at night with accent lighting. Light-colored wall accessories or large decorative mirrors provide a feeling of spaciousness to a small room. Built-in wall cut-outs can offer a place to display art pieces with spotlights or a candle arrangement without taking precious floor space.

Ceiling

Cathedral or vaulted ceilings, even in small dining rooms, give an illusion of a larger room. A small square dining room with cut-out ceilings and special trim and accent lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling presents a gorgeous look. Light fixtures should be translucent or tastefully small and hung high above the table or center of the room to prevent the appearance of taking over the small space.

Floor

Avoid busy patterns of carpeting or tile flooring in a small dining room. Light colors or natural wood will offer the best atmosphere; however, dark carpet or other floors in solid colors may give an elegant and rich look if the walls are light in color. A large area rug under your table will give a relaxing touch.

Other Options

Built-in shelving or small corner curio cabinets can provide a nice place to display collectibles or store extra dishes. Beautiful centerpieces set below eye level when diners are seated give a visual focus on the center of the room. Large, clear vases and bowls filled with flowers provide a more spacious appearance.
