Check Bathroom Fans

An overhead bathroom fan removes steam and odor from the air. This makes the bathroom more comfortable and helps to prevent mold and mildew. Install only replacement parts that are compatible with your bathroom fan's make and model. Consult your owner's manual or the manufacturer's website for a part number listing if you are unsure which part to buy. You can also take the old part to the hardware store with you to use as an example when shopping for a replacement.

Instructions

1. Check the circuit breaker switch that controls power to the bathroom fan. Reset the switch if it is tripped, and replace any blown fuses you notice in the circuit breaker box.

2. Place a sturdy ladder under the overhead fan. Climb up the ladder and remove the plastic cover. Depending on the style of your fan cover, you may have to release a set of retention clips before you can pull off the cover. Make sure the power cord inside the fan is plugged into the electrical outlet.

3. Test the electrical outlet with a voltmeter if the fan is plugged in but does not turn on. If you do not get a reading of 120 volts, there is a problem with the wiring or the light switch that controls the outlet. Turn off the circuit breaker and replace the light switch. Turn the circuit breaker back on and test the fan again. Call an electrician to inspect the outlet if the fan still does not work.

4. Remove any dust or debris from the vents of the cover if your bathroom fan does not have enough suction. Wipe off the fan blades with a soft cloth. Replace the fan if any of the blades are bent or cracked. If this fails to correct the problem, you may have to disconnect the fan assembly and clear out the exhaust duct.

5. Replace the fan's motor if you hear a grinding noise when the fan operates. This usually indicates a problem with the bearings inside the motor.

Paint Bathroom Cupboards

Painting bathroom cupboards can make a dramatic change for little money.

Bathrooms are among the most private of spaces--but they're also on public view whenever we have overnight guests or entertain. If your bathroom cupboards are looking a little shabby or tired, perk them up with a shiny new coat of paint. It's a job you can complete in a weekend and will enjoy for years to come.

Instructions

1. Purchase your paint and primer. If your cupboards are made from knotty wood or have stains that might bleed through your new paint, buy a stain-suppressing or "blocking" primer. You'll have to choose between oil-based and latex paint. Latex paint is an attractive choice because it dries quickly, is mildew resistant, is low odor and cleans up with water. Choose a gloss or satin enamel paint for extra durability.

2. Prepare your work area by laying painting dropcloths or newspapers on the floor and any nearby furniture.

3. Remove all cupboard doors, drawers, shelves and hardware, using a screwdriver.

4. Clean all the surfaces you plan to paint. Most bathroom cupboards will come clean with a general household cleaner. For very dirty or greasy surfaces, you can use tri-sodium phosphate (TSP). TSP is a harsh chemical, so be sure to carefully follow all instructions for use. Rinse all surfaces with water and let them dry thoroughly.

5. Scrape off any loose or flaking paint, using a paint scraper.

6. Fill any deep scratches or dents with wood filler or putty, using a putty knife. Wipe any excess putty away. When the putty is dry, sand the surface smooth with fine sandpaper (180-grit).

7. Sand all surfaces you plan to paint. This will create a "toothed," or rough, surface so the primer and paint will adhere properly. Use 150- or 180-grit sandpaper.

8. Remove all dust from the cupboard surfaces using a tack cloth or damp rag.

9. Tape off any adjoining surfaces or fixtures that you don't want to be accidentally painted.

10. Prime the cupboard doors, shelves and drawers. Apply a thin layer of primer and allow it to dry.

11. Prime the inside of the cabinet, if you are planning to paint it. Allow it to dry.

12. Apply your first coat of paint to the doors, drawers and shelves. Use long, even brush strokes and apply a thin coat of paint. Re-coat once the first paint layer has fully dried.

13. Apply a coat of paint to the inside of the cupboards, if appropriate. Re-coat once dry.

14. Reattach cupboard doors and reinstall drawers, shelves and hardware once the paint has fully cured. Latex paint can take 14- to 30-days to cure fully. Cure times will be listed on your paint can.

Another Master Bedroom Suite

A second bedroom suite makes your house more versatile and valuable.

You can increase your home's value by adding a second master suite. Many families find the extra space attractive for in-laws or adult children living in the home. A master suite is a good place to find privacy and relaxation away from the rest of the family. A home with two expanded bedroom areas will always find a unique place in the real estate market, since it provides a good solution for an extended family living under one roof.

Instructions

1. Look for room to expand your current foundation to accommodate a second master suite. If you have a large bedroom area and adjoining hallway, you might create a master suite without expanding your home's foundation. A master suite requires room for sleeping, sitting and relaxing, a large closet, and a bathroom area. By removing a couple of interior walls, you might find this space. If you remove any load-bearing walls, you'll need expert help in reframing the surrounding structure. Load-bearing walls literally hold up the house's weight.

2. Tear out any drywall areas to run additional outlets or light fixtures into the master suite. Decide where plumbing pipes and drains will enter the area. Frame all walls for the bedroom, closet and bath using 2-by-4-inch boards. Allow room for a garden tub, large shower and vanity area in the bathroom. Place wall studs on 18-inch centers. Run electrical wiring and any duct work to the area for heat and air. Install sub-flooring in the new master suite.

3. Cut through the home's exterior framing to place new windows. Hire an expert to help you remove brick and stone. Never cut through an exterior wall of any type without an expert carpenter on site. Install new windows and refinish the exterior of the house. Insulate the exterior perimeter walls and the ceiling area of the master suite. Enclose the interior areas in drywall. Finish with joint compound, and sand for painting. Install wood trim and crown molding in the area. Paint all drywall with flat or semi-gloss paint. Paint all wood trim and molding with semi-gloss or high-gloss paint.

4. Install wood flooring or tile in the sleeping area. Install all fixtures, plumbing and tile in the bathroom area. You can use carpet in the closet area if you desire. Put baseboard materials around all walls and inside the closet. Hang closet doors and the exterior doors of the master suite. Hook up all light fixtures and electrical outlets.

5. Add special touches such as high-end wallpaper, wood shelving or a fireplace to the room. Install wire shelving or wooden shelving in the closet area. Build a wall unit to hold a TV and media players if you desire. Add mirror tiles on one or more walls to add light to the space.

Change The Leather Color Of A Dining Room Chair

Recolor a Leather Chair

So you want to change the leather color of your dining room chair. That's a smart way to change the look of the dining set and modernize or update a look that's tired. You can use a leather restaining kit to completely recolor your leather, add a monogram or just to refresh the original color, especially when time or cleaning products have degraded the original finish. Recoloring leather is generally a simple three-step process that involves removing the old sealer, adding the new color and then resealing.

Instructions

1. Clean the leather thoroughly with saddle soap or another leather cleaner. Be sure you're not using a product with an aniline finish, as it will place a protective seal over the leather that can make it resistant to new pigments. On the ingredients list, anything that starts with the prefix "anil" is suspect.

2. Be sure that you've completely buffed away any residue from the leather cleaner before you proceed. The leather should be left conditioned and supple, not stiff or crispy.

3. Apply the leather refinishing product you've chosen. Products like "Back to nature Nu Leather" are easy to apply--they wipe on like a wood stain. Other products like Liquid Leather, Tarrago Self-Shine Leather Dye and Leather Luster are available in spray, brush-on or gel forms that need to be massaged into the leather. A brush-on is good for small areas and detailed leather work, like stenciled monogramming. A spray is suitable for large areas where a mottled finish is acceptable, and a wipe-on method gives you the most control over color depth and tone.

4. Allow your leather to rest for up to 24 hours after restaining. If the manufacturer of your stain requires you to use a sealer, apply it now (unless their instructions state otherwise). Be sure to buff it in as much as possible, to get the smoothest finish.

Small Bathroom Paint Color Ideas

A small bathroom can pose design challenges relative to paint color.

You love your new home. Its bedrooms, kitchen, living and dining areas are all perfectly proportioned and ideal for their potential uses. The sole drawback just may be one of the bathrooms. With bathrooms, the challenge of making a small space look larger is only intensified, because full bathrooms must have at least a sink, toilet, and tub or shower. Pale shades of blue, green and cream can do the trick.

Blue

Cool blue shades add calm to the small bathroom.

Blue as a color represents calm, peace and tranquility, according to Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Studies show it can even slow down the pulse, according to the site. Setting a tranquil tone in the bathroom is fitting, especially if you have children who may be anxious or ambivalent about the potty training process. Even adults can take refuge in calming bathroom spaces, whether bathing, showering, shaving, applying makeup or otherwise completing their daily toilette. Soothing spaces are appropriate to ease you into the start of the day, as well as to help you wind down before bedtime in the evening. Try robin's egg blue paint, along with a similar shade for bath and shower ceramic tiling. Or go for pale blue walls with slate blue tubs and sinks; slate-gray floors can help ground the pale color scheme.

Pale Seafoam

The buds of this sea plant offer up a soothing seafoam hue.

Green is another cool, soothing color, according to Bloomsburg University. Seafoam green, a color found in nature, can introduce a seaside, beachy feel to your small bathroom. Use the palest seafoam paint available to paint your walls. Then employ subtle green shades for the rest of the space. Imagine a gray-green tub and sink with deep-green marble flooring. Or consider green glass tiling for the shower and countertops, with painted concrete floors.

Cream

Innocent cream allows the eye and the mind to rest.

Cream is a relative of white, which has connotations of purity and cleanliness, according to Precision Intermedia. In addition, creamy off-white shades, less absolute than pure white, allow the eye and the mind to rest in the near-absence of color. And restfulness is key, especially at the end of a busy day. You can carry the cream color from the walls to the rest of the decor, or vary the scheme a bit by using slightly deeper hues of the undertones in your wall color for the other elements in your bathroom. For example, bisque walls will peacefully accompany oatmeal marble countertops, shower walls and flooring. Cream-colored walls will provide an innocent backdrop to French vanilla cabinetry and tiling.

Dining Room Window Treatment Ideas

Dress your dining room windows with elegant draperies.

Your dining room is the place for formal occasions as well as family dinners and, perhaps, other social gatherings. In many homes, the tone of the dining room is a bit classier than other areas of the home, so decor is an important part of the experience. Privacy is not as much of an issue in dining areas as in other areas of the home, so select your window coverings more for their aesthetic appeal, and light and heat control rather than privacy.

Vertical Blinds

For a frequently used or multipurpose dining room, fabric-covered or semi-sheer vertical blinds are ideal. These blinds are durable and relatively easy to clean, and the look is far more formal than horizontal blinds. They offer adjustable control over the room's natural lighting, and the vertical lines match the lofty and restrained tone of a dining room. You can soften this formality by adding sheer scarves or tied-back curtains on top of the blinds.

Swags

Curved lines can lend an elegant feel to your dining room. Line your windows with panels to soften the light, then add swags on top. Choose rich, deep tones that match your dining room's decor and use fabrics that have a natural sheen to help pick up and reflect the light. If your dining room decor is blue, choose cobalt or navy panels and swags with white sheers. For red dining rooms, opt for ivory sheers and wine-colored panels and swags. Greens can go with either white or ivory, and dark forest or jade panels will work well with sage tone walls and decor.

Drapery Panels

Choose floor-to-ceiling drapery panels no matter what size your dining room windows are. The length adds formality and elegance to your dining area. Match the drapery fabric with your dining room style. For example, contemporary dining rooms with modern furniture and neutral paint colors will benefit from linen curtains with natural dyes. Roman shades can work well in this instance. Classical dining rooms with heavier furniture and white or buff walls may be well-suited to patterned or textured draperies in bold colors. Keep the colors muted, using darker jewel tones or natural dyes, rather than drawing too much attention to your curtains with bright, sunny colors.

Change The Color Of A White Bedroom Suite

Fully remove the paint on a white bedroom suite before you apply a new color.

Furniture colors are no longer limited to wood tones, black and white. A white bedroom suite looks fresh and elegant at first, but will eventually become dingy and even boring as years go by and styles change. Instead of buying a whole new bedroom suite, choose a favorite color to paint each piece of furniture in the set. By carefully preparing your white furniture before you paint, you can achieve a brand-new look in about a week.

Instructions

1. Remove hardware from the furniture.

2. Sand the furniture well to remove the white paint and to prepare the surface.

3. Wipe the furniture down to remove any dust that remains after sanding, taking special care to remove dust from any crevices.

4. Prime the furniture using a primer that contains sealer. This type of product will say "sealer" on the label.

5. Brush on a latex indoor house paint, following the wood grain, and allow it to dry.

6. Apply a second coat of paint, and wait for it to dry and cure. The curing process takes about a week.

7. Sand the whole piece lightly with very fine sandpaper to smooth out the paint.

8. Apply a paste wax in a natural color. Rub it on the furniture, and buff it out. You may need more than one coat to achieve the desired shine.

Create A Garden Themed Bedroom Decor

Consider a picket fence headboard or chair rail for a garden-themed room.

Bring the magic of a spring garden indoors for your little girl. With nature as inspiration, create a fairy grotto, butterfly playground or picket fence paradise perfect for your little girl. She can be the princess of her own garden wonderland that you create with supplies and accessories from the home and garden department.

Instructions

1. Select a paint color. Pastels are always a good choice for decorating a little girl's room and work well for a garden theme. Think about your daughter's favorite flower or if you want to add a stencil or mural to the room and choose colors that will complement your design.

2. Dress the bed and windows in a floral pattern. Purchase a floral quilt and drapes or add your own flower appliques to a plain comforter and sheer curtain panels. Butterflies, dragonflies and bees are other options for decorating your garden decor bedding and window treatments.

3. Add design elements to the walls. Wall stickers are an option if stenciling takes you out of your comfort zone. Look for wall stickers in flower and butterfly designs at craft and dollar stores. Apply them to the wall, dressers, headboard or any surface to add a touch of whimsy -- and if you don't like the placement, take them off and move them to another spot.

4. Find paper lanterns, ladybug string lights, wind chimes, watering cans, baskets and flowerpots at home and garden centers to add to your decor. Choose watering cans, baskets and flowerpots large enough to do double-duty as decorations and storage.

5. Check craft stores for silk flower garlands, floral picture frames and other garden themed accessories. Ready to finish step stools, toy chests, rocking chairs and benches can be painted and easily adorned with stenciled garden elements or more of wall stickers.

6. Decorate with wrought iron, picket fencing and lattice. Add a row of picket fencing in place of wainscoting and lattice trellis as crown molding. Use sections of fencing to make a decorative headboard.

7. Add elements containing the child's name to the bedroom for a sweet, personal touch.

Clemson Bedroom Ideas

Clemson University, a public school located in Clemson, South Carolina, provides students with an opportunity to excel in various academic programs. Though the original Clemson colors were red and blue, the introduction of the Clemson University football program in 1896 brought about the adoption of new colors, orange and purple. Bring your bedroom to life with the color scheme of the famed Clemson University Tigers.

Walls

Transform your bedroom into a Clemson fan's dream escape by painting the walls a shade of purple or orange. Colors can range from a perfect match to light or dark shades of your favorite school's colors. Consider using one wall as an accent wall. Paint three walls one color, such as lavender, and the fourth wall a light shade of orange. Painting the walls with stripes of alternating colors represents another option. Choose player profiles or magazine covers to frame and hang on the wall. Adorn the walls with signs that mention the Clemson Tigers, such as fan parking signs or pennant flags.

Bedding and Window Treatments

Opt for bedding that brings in a touch of Clemson Tiger personality. Use bed skirts, comforters and blankets that show your Clemson pride with university logos and tiger paw prints. Cover mattresses with sheets in various shades of the school's colors to complement the colors of the walls. Pillowcases can match the sheets or can reflect the Clemson University logo and mascot. Throw pillows in various colors can bring the whole look together. Coordinate window treatments, including curtains and valances, with the rest of the room. Match curtains and valances to bedding colors and wall colors. You can also use officially licensed merchandise to match the official Clemson University colors.

Decor and Accessories

Younger kids and college students may enjoy having the stuffed animal version of the Clemson University mascot on display in their room. Decorate the desk area with paperweights, pens, pencils and lights that display the Clemson University logo. Use a Clemson University tumbler to keep pencils and pens organized. Consider placing an orange or purple rug in the room. Display pictures in orange, purple or Clemson University picture frames. Place autographed merchandise, such as footballs, jerseys and books, throughout your bedroom.

Images & Ideas For Teenagers' Bedrooms

Take a room from plain to inspired with a few steps.

Teenagers know their interests, creative ideas and aesthetic preferences. It's smart to design their bedroom when they have an idea of what they like. To make a bedroom for a teenager come to life, you can play with images, paint and bedding. Also, making a room modular and useful is important. There are a few key ways to achieve this look---all you need is a little creativity and inspiration.

Colors

Choose a color palette that will show creativity and maturity.

Teens are constantly changing; it is key to choose a color palette that will suit their changing styles. HGTV's website for teen bedrooms suggests that it is a good idea to choose colors that help transition between the teen years. Choose a mature, solid color that the teen is sure to like---and select an appropriate hue that matches their personality. While some tweens like brighter colors, for example hot pink, you may want to go with a more mature deep pink shade. This way, the color will be suitable for a prolonged period of time. Don't be afraid to try an accent wall. An accent wall is painted a completely different color than the other walls. This gives the room balance and a sense of maturity.

Photos

Use pictures to bring personality to the bedroom.

Teenagers are passionate about their favorite movies and bands; try inviting those interests into their bedroom. Have the teen select a photo of a band or a movie still. Have the photo re-sized at a local paper shop and placed inside a large frame. Experiment with using a few large photos or several smaller photos across one wall to give the room an artistic look. Try printing the photos in black and white if you want their image to contrast with a colored wall.

Modular Space

Neat storage makes a room functional and comfortable.

To make a room modular ensure that each piece of furniture can work with or fit with one another. For instance, purchase a large desk for the teenager. The chair should fit neatly underneath the desk. Underneath, you should also be able to fit storage bins or drawers that can hold extra clothing, laundry or video games. This way, the belongings are not cramped into every corner and can be tucked away neatly beneath a specific space. Consider also purchasing an entertainment console that can fit a T.V., video game consoles and a radio---this makes it easy to wrap up all the wires and electronics in one space.

Replace A Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Learn replace your bathroom exhaust fan.

The exhaust fan in your bathroom keeps the air in the room moving so moisture cannot build up. Excessive moisture in the bathroom encourages mold growth, which can be dangerous when inhaled, especially if you or your family have respiratory problems like asthma. If your fan has stopped working, you can replace it with a new one in just a few minutes to keep your bathroom moisture-free.

Instructions

1. Turn off the circuit breaker switch that controls the power to the bathroom.

2. Place a stepladder or stool under the exhaust fan. Step up and pull on both sides of the exhaust fan cover until it slides down and you can see the retention clips. Release the clips and remove the cover.

3. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet inside the fan well. Remove the screws that hold the exhaust fan onto the ceiling. Remove the old exhaust fan and discard it.

4. Insert the new exhaust fan into the fan well and tighten the mounting screws. You may need an assistant to hold up the fan as you tighten the screws. Plug in the power cord.

5. Replace the fan cover and push up until it snaps into the retention clips. Turn on the circuit breaker switch to restore power to the bathroom.

Decorate A Pirate Bedroom With Waves & Blue Skies

Decorate a pirate-themed bedroom with blue skies, waves and other pirate-related elements.

Decorate your little pirate's bedroom with waves and blue skies to facilitate his imaginary sea adventures. A themed bedroom can encourage your child's imaginative play and give him a space that he feels is genuinely his. Your child's bedroom should include elements of a pirate's life that most appeal to him. Use the entire bedroom to complete the theme instead of relying on the walls.

Instructions

1. Prepare for painting by removing everything from the walls and washing them down. If the walls are not white, you may want to use primer first so the old paint colors don't bleed through your new design. Tape off windows, trim and doors with blue painter's tape. Cover the floor and any furniture with a plastic or cloth tarp that won't allow any spilled paint to seep through.

2. Paint at least one wall to look like the sea and sky. If you paint all of the walls, the room can serve as an island or your little pirate's ship. Use a darker blue paint for the sea and a lighter blue for the sky. If you want a more natural appearance, consider lightly mixing a small amount of white paint in with the blue (don't blend the two colors together) and painting streaks across the "water."

3. Create waves by drawing the design on the wall lightly with a pencil or using a stencil about one-third of the way up the wall. Paint the portion of wall under the waves in the darker blue color or mix. Use a smaller paint brush to outline the wave-line and fill it in. Paint the wall above the wave-line with the lighter blue color or mix. The ceiling can continue the "sky" if you're painting the entire room.

4. Accentuate the waves by drawing darker blue wave-lines in random spots in the "water." Sponging a darker blue randomly throughout the water may create a more realistic-looking ocean, as well. Dip a sponge in white paint and dab it under the waves to create the illusion of sea foam or bubbles.

5. Add clouds to the skies by dipping sea sponges lightly in white paint and dabbing it onto the wall to create a cloud shape. Dip the same sponge in the blue sky-colored paint and go over the outer-edges of the cloud to blend it in a bit, making it appear more natural.

6. Arrange the furniture to look like a captain's quarters and allow plenty of space for play. Invest in a pirate-themed bed, or create a bed that mimics a pirate's ship if possible. The dresser and shelves should be natural-looking wood like you'd find on a pirate ship. Use a chest that looks like a treasure chest as a toy box.

7. Accessorize the room with pirate-themed items. Look for a ship's wheel wall clock, Jolly Roger flag comforter, treasure map curtains, model ships, a globe, a compass and more to decorate the room and add to the pirate-theme. Consider planting a small fake palm tree in one corner of the room for a stuffed parrot to sit in, or hang a large fishnet in one corner to hold stuffed animals. A blue rug in the center of the room can give the illusion of more water.

Decorate The Ceiling In A Bathroom

Decorating a bathroom ceiling can be a fun project.

Ceilings are often seen by decorators as an additional wall to decorate and add visual interest to any room in a home. The design of a ceiling area creates visual illusions, such as making a low ceiling feel higher, enhancing the interior design of a room and giving the space a visual focal point. Bathrooms are rooms in which a ceiling may not be an element that is often decorated, but its design is equally important in the overall look and feel of the space. Using a few decorator tips, creating a decorated bathroom ceiling can be easy and fun.

Instructions

1. Paint the ceiling a dark color. A dark ceiling visually creates a bathroom ceiling decor in which the ceiling appears lower. This type of paint treatment is suitable for an unusually high ceiling that you want to recede.

2. Apply light color paint to the ceiling. Bathroom ceilings that are painted in a light color give the illusion of a higher ceiling and make the space feel larger. This technique is particularly useful in a home with low ceilings, such as a mobile home, and is a way to create a feeling of spaciousness.

3. Affix aluminum ceiling tiles to the ceiling. Tin or aluminum tiles add a vintage quality to any ceiling. This type of treatment requires good ventilation, with an exhaust fan, to prevent condensation on the tiles, but is a good option when the surface of the ceiling is less than desirable because the tiles cover up the actual ceiling space.

4. Paint stripes on the ceiling. To create a bathroom ceiling that adds interest and drama, paint large stripes on the ceiling, using 2 complimentary colors of paint, and painter's masking tape, for a design that draws the eye up and makes the space feel higher and larger.

5. Add beadboard panels to the ceiling. Beadboard, or wood panels that have thin grooves, is suited to bathrooms where you want a seaside, shabby-chic or country cottage decor. Paint the bathroom ceiling beadboard white, stain it, or leave it rough, depending on the desired decor of the room for a space with visual interest and style.

6. Augment your rustic bathroom ceiling decor with earthy, rough faux beams. These wonderful natural-looking beams are very lightweight, which makes them easy to handle, and they add visual depth to your bathroom ceiling.

Early American Bathroom Tiles

Early ceramic bathroom tiles were handmade.

Colonial American bathrooms featured marble or ceramic tile in the homes of those who were sufficiently well-to-do to afford them. Less wealthy Americans tiled floors and wainscoting and left the upper parts of walls to be painted with oils or covered with decorative paper. Tiles in the 13 colonies were handmade imports from Britain -- luxury items that only the rich could afford to use in abundance. American-made tiles came later.

Early North American Tile-Making

Tile-making is an ancient craft that can be traced back to Centamura del Chianti near Siena, Italy, where an ancient kiln from the 3rd century b.c.e. was recently excavated. European tile makers brought their skills to America in the late 18th century. Tile-producing factories were eventually established across North America in the mid-19th century. Until World War II, most tile was made in brick kilns in small batches. The tile often took 24 hours or more to be properly fired and set.

The Process

Early tile-making was an expensive, labor-intensive process that put the finished product out of affordable reach for most Americans. The tile had to be hand-fed into a press, dried, glazed and fired. Fancier tiles required multiple firings. Decorative work was painstakingly tedious and required patience and artistry. Producing just one run of tile could take days. Temperatures within the kilns were difficult to regulate, and unwanted color differences or defects meant many imperfect tiles had to be scrapped.

Innovation

By the late 1800s and early 1900s, advancements in kiln design improved the manufacturing process. Instead of placing tile within a stationary kiln, the material was loaded on carts and gradually pushed through a tunnel kiln that could be several hundred feet long. Manpower gave way eventually to steam-generated presses and conveyor belts, making tile manufacturing faster and cheaper while increasing uniformity and decreasing waste. Tile was becoming affordable for increasing numbers of Americans.

Early Tile Shapes and Patterns

Colonial tile patterning featured white, 3/4-inch-square tile in a straight or broken joint configuration. This gave way to 3/4-inch by 1 9/16-inch mosaic subway tile, so-called because of its use in underground transport tunnels in the 1880s. Circular 3/4-inch penny rounds became common at the turn of the century, and these and earlier tiles were combined to form elaborate basket weave, herringbone and spiral patterns. More tile shapes were developed in the early 20th century, including the pentagon, hexagon and diamond.

Salvage and Reproduction Tiles

As older buildings were demolished in the building boom after World War II, some American companies had the foresight to salvage old tiling for reuse in restoration or reproduction bathroom projects. As consumer demand for nostalgic design grew, other tile producers began to specialize in reproductions of early American tile to create a vintage look in contemporary bathroom spaces.

Neutral Bedroom Paint Colors

True neutral colors don't appear on the color wheel.

True neutral colors are any combination of white, black and gray. While brown is not strictly a neutral color, designers often include it in the neutral family. Neutral color palettes don't appear on the color wheel and generally serve as a backdrop for more-vibrant colors. When decorating the bedroom, consider using neutral colors as a base and subtly blending other colors, textures and patterns to create bedroom decor that fits any home.

White

White walls in a bedroom enhance natural light.

White paint and fabric generally comes with some kind of subtle tint---usually cool blue or warm yellow, notes Dream Home Decorating. The clean, open feeling of white makes it an ideal choice for the bedroom, especially when the decorator wants to create a serene, peaceful environment. Natural light is reflected off of white paint, making any room seem more vibrant and brilliant. White paint is especially good for small bedrooms because white walls and ceilings appear to recede, making the room look bigger. White works in any color scheme, such as with sunny yellow and orange for a friendly and inviting bedroom or with cool blue or violet for a peaceful sanctuary.

Black

Black in the bedroom can be anything but gloomy.

A bedroom with all walls painted black is generally not a good idea. Black absorbs light and the association with this color on the walls is generally negative. That doesn't mean that black has no place in the bedroom---a black accent wall can harmonize quite well with white, beige or gray walls, according to Good Housekeeping. Black paint on architectural features such as recessed bookshelves, a fireplace surround or a bay window can bring contrast to an otherwise dull, neutral room. Black paint combined with metallic accents gives a bedroom a modern style.

Gray

Shades of gray contrast with one another as well as other neutrals.

Gray has a range of hues that provide plenty of options for a bedroom color palette. From dove gray to dark charcoal, a neutral gray palette sets off other colors well, notes Dream Home Decorating. Try contrasting it with variations of red or yellow---the gray won't provide as much contrast and will downplay the burst of color, according to Good Housekeeping. A blue-gray that resembles gun metal combines beautifully with rich dark brown and gold accents.

Brown

Use all the shades of brown for a warm, neutral bedroom.

Choose dark details in brown to give the bedroom a rich, luxurious feeling. Chocolate-colored walls contrast nicely with lighter linens and flooring. If the walls are too dark, consider adding a tan wainscoting about halfway up, then painting the rest of the walls dark brown, advises Good Housekeeping. In contrast, a cream or beige wall paint best sets off a variety of other colors, such as green, blue or orange. Brown wall paint will lend a cozy, classy feel to any bedroom, notes Dream Home Decorating, and is considered the warmest of the neutral and near-neutral options.

Design A Bedroom Addition

Add a vaulted ceiling to increase visual space in the new bedroom.

Adding a bedroom to your home can enhance the home's value, especially a master suite that includes a bathroom, if possible. Creating this space should appeal to future buyers, since families often need additional space for extended family or in-laws. A spacious bedroom addition can provide room to create a small rental space in the future or as well. Building on the bedroom can be a project the whole family can enjoy.

Instructions

1. Incorporate fresh ideas into your new space, so the room will look cutting-edge for years to come. Make notes about materials and products you find appealing. Make a list of your favorite amenities, window designs, ceiling designs and bath fixtures. Include a bathroom, however small, if at all possible in the new addition.

2. Measure the exterior space you will use for the bedroom. Design the foundation for the new addition to look perfectly harmonious with the existing foundation of your home by using matching materials. Draw the basic design on graph paper to envision how the addition will fit the proportions of the rest of your house. Sketch the addition from a bird's eye view and other angles. Draw each wall from both the interior and exterior perspective. Calculate interior dimensions by allowing 12 inches of depth for each exterior wall.

3. Design the interior ceiling of the new addition to be 9 feet tall, if you don't wish to vault the ceiling. Allow a minimum of 16 feet from floor to top beam of the space for a typical vaulted ceiling. Lay out the room to look as spacious as possible by incorporating large windows or skylights. Sketch a walk-in closet no smaller than 6-by-8-feet and a bathroom no smaller than 6-by-9-feet, if you have room. Include a walk-out door onto a small deck area, if you can allow yard space for a deck.

4. Designate one wall of the bedroom, opposite the bed, for a wall unit that is built-in to help keep the rest of the room clutter free. Design the wall unit 8 feet tall, 2 feet deep and as long as the entire wall. Plan this space for a TV, media players, books and a computer on open shelving. Design closeable doors over certain parts of the space and incorporate a small desk area.

5. Consult with an electrician and plumber to figure out how you will route wiring, ductwork for heating and air, and water pipes into the space. Sit down with a heat pump expert to figure out if you will need to add a larger heat pump to your house as well to accommodate the addition. Draw all drain lines for your bath area in the plans and meet with city officials to determine any building requirements. Obtain a building permit before you actually start construction.

Paint Over Cracked Paint In The Bathroom

Cracked paint in a bathroom is usually due to the underlying substrate (plaster or drywall) deteriorating or flexing with temperature and humidity changes. Bathrooms can be hostile environments for paint because of the high moisture levels. Painting over cracked paint without correct preparation results in an uneven surface and peeling paint within a fairly short time. If you don't mind a little hard work and mess, you can deal with that cracked paint and have a smooth and durable bathroom paint job.

Instructions

1. Prepare the room by cleaning off the countertop, removing the shower curtain, and taking towel bars and switch-plate covers off the wall. Open a window or turn on the fan before starting work to speed drying.

2. Clean all the surfaces to be painted. Use a mild detergent and wipe down the walls, ceiling, and trim, finishing up with a clean water rinse. Make sure the walls are squeaky-clean and free of hairspray residue, soap scum, and mildew.

3. Use a chisel-edged scraper to remove as much peeling and cracked paint as possible.

4. Spread a thin coat of ready-mixed joint compound over uneven areas where you've removed old cracked paint. Use a 9- or 12-inch drywall knife. Since joint compound shrinks as it dries, it may take two or three coats to get a level surface. Sand lightly in between coats to knock down the high spots, and do the final sanding with a medium-fine sanding sponge. Wipe the sanding dust away with a damp sponge.

5. Mask the edges of anything you aren't painting, such as countertops, tile, and baseboards. Use blue painter's tape for the cleanest lines.

6. Prime the entire surface with one coat of oil- or tinted shellac-based primer. Allow it to dry as recommended on the label. Keep windows open or a fan going to dissipate fumes, because these primers are pungent.

7. Paint the bathroom with two coats of good-quality latex paint. Allow at least four hours' drying time in between coats and avoid using the bath or shower for at least 12 hours to allow the paint to dry.

Cool Bedroom Paint Colors

Cool colors include green, blue and purple.

Cool colors are those colors on the color wheel opposite red, orange and yellow. Cool colors are generally refreshing but lacking some of the glaring intensity of the warmer colors. When painting a bedroom, feel free to use the brighter colors that present real personality. After all, this is your personal space. Pick something that you love and that shows off who you are.

Lime Green

You have to really like lime green to want to put it on your walls. All the same, it's so bold and fresh, it really makes a statement about you. It's necessary to match this particular color to the furniture, the curtains and other room accessories. Maintaining a limited palette allows you to pull this look off without creating visual overload in the room. Lime green and white make a good combination, so white furniture looks fabulous against lime green paint. By breaking up the color on the walls with white shelves, or by installing white paneling in the lower half of the wall, the green becomes less overwhelming.

Sky Blue

Sky blue, a light to medium shade of cool blue, brings cheer and personality to a room. This color works well with other shades of blue or when combined with honey-colored hardwood floors and white trim. Sky blue is a flexible paint color with a contemporary attitude that is sophisticated but relaxed, excellent for any child or adult bedroom.

Deep Fuchsia

Fuchsia is basically a pink color, but deep fuchsia has a dusty-gray quality that makes it closer to a desaturated blue-violet. This feminine and exciting color, when paired with shades of gray, becomes regal but recessive and peaceful, making the bedroom the perfect place to relax at night.

Change A Bathroom Tub Into A Shower

Change a Bathroom Tub Into a Shower

Converting a standard bathtub into a shower can be done in several ways. The existing tub can serve as the base for the shower with certain amenities added. For example, acrylic walls can be attached around the existing tub. Or, the tub space can be revamped to accommodate a pre-molded shower with walls. By reviewing different options and weighing them against a given budget, it's not that hard to decide the best method for conversion.

Instructions

1. Measure the bathtub space to determine if a single shower rod or curved rod around two sides can convert the space to a shower inexpensively. Use a long single rod and curtain, if the tub is enclosed on three sides. Attach the shower rod to walls or the ceiling. Install a shower-head unit about 5 feet above the standard tub faucet.

2. Consider using a curved shower rod along two sides of the tub, if the tub is open on two sides. Add two or three curtains to the rod. Attach the long, curved rod to the ceiling with wires or metal holders made for this purpose. Install an adjustable shower head or add a faucet with a hand-held shower spray unit.

3. Convert a bathtub with a good finish into a shower by installing clear, fiberglass sliding doors. Add metal hardware for the sliding door unit to the bathtub on one of the longer sides. Enclose one or more of the other three sides, if needed, to complete the shower enclosure. Run water lines to the upper shower head through the interior wall above the shower faucet, through the attic or from a bathroom in an adjoining room.

4. Review the option of having a new, pre-molded tub with walls built in. Enlist the help of professionals who can measure and refit the bathtub with a one-piece fiberglass unit that functions as a shower-tub combo. Install this type of unit if it would be time-consuming or messy to remove the tub. Select this method to turn the existing bathtub space into a shower in a single day.

5. Tear out the bathtub and replace it with a pre-built shower unit that is close in size, if the bathtub is old or broken. Buy a pre-made shower unit that can be assembled in sections on site. Purchase just a shower base and tile the walls around it, if the walls are smooth enough to accommodate new tile work. Make the space look a lot larger by installing two clear Fiberglas doors that open outward into the bathroom. Add the doors to provide more light inside the shower area, especially if a handicapped person lives in the home.

Make A Luxury Bedroom

Create a relaxing, luxurious bedroom in your home.

It is often said that a person's bedroom is her sanctuary. A luxurious bedroom will be a place a person wants to escape to every night after a long and stressful day. When you are planning your bedroom, think about the touches that are typically included in high-end hotel suites. Creating a luxurious bedroom might take a bit of money, but it is something that most people can handle without a professional designer.

Instructions

1. Install thick carpeting in your bedroom. Soft carpeting will feel nice on your feet when you walk barefoot. If you like the look of hardwoods, choose large, soft area rugs for the space. Be sure to place a rug beside the bed so that you don't have to step out of bed onto cold floors.

2. Select furniture for your space, including a bed, a side table, a dresser, a vanity and a chair or two. Select a large bed with a large headboard. Make sure that the mattress is comfortable. Choose furniture that is not too fussy and is large enough to hold all of your items. Make sure the furniture remains clear of clutter.

3. Place sheets with a high thread count on the bed. Add a duvet that is thick, soft and warm. Choose muted colors for the bed, such as pure white or earth tones, for a more elegant look. Place lots of comfortable pillows on the bed so that you can stay in bed and read or relax.

4. Avoid bright lights for your luxurious bedroom. If you desire an overhead light, select a chandelier with small light bulbs that are not too bright. If the bulbs are bright, consider installing a dimmer on your light switch. Otherwise, select lamps for your side tables so that the lighting in the room will be low and warm.

5. Include entertainment in your luxurious bedroom. Tailor the entertainment options to what you enjoy doing. For example, consider creating a reading nook in a corner of the room beside the window. If you enjoy watching television or movies, place a television and DVD player in the room. However, be sure to place the electronics inside a cabinet so that you can hide them and their wires when they are not in use.

Use Krylon Spray Paint For Bathroom Cabinets

Krylon spray paint is an ideal option for refurbishing bathroom cabinets.

Cabinetry is an important part of a bathroom redesign. It helps create the basic structure of the space and provides storage to keep the place in order. When undertaking a bathroom remodel, there are two main options regarding cabinets: refurbish or replace. Replacement cabinets often consume a large chunk of a budget, making refurbishing an easy, inexpensive option ideal for cabinets that are still in good condition. A number of paint products will work in the bathroom, and Krylon brand spray paint is among them.

Benefits of Krylon

Krylon was first marketed in 1947 and was the first manufacturer of aerosol paints in the U.S. Today, the brand has several hundred colors to choose from and a variety of paint types depending on the intended use of the piece. The Krylon Fusion for Plastic works on plastic products without priming while the Krylon H20 Latex is ideal for children's furnishings. This product is intended for indoor or outdoor use and will not nick or chip, ideal for use in the bathroom. Spraying should be done outdoors whenever possible, or the room should be well ventilated. Once dried, Krylon products are all nontoxic.

Replace or Refinish

Most cabinet materials are designed to last several years and will stay looking good with very little care. Replacement is only necessary if the cabinet body is in poor condition or damaged. If cabinet faces are outdated, a moderately priced option is refacing, which replaces existing cabinet and drawer doors with new pieces. Painting is a simple option and will give the existing cabinets a whole new look. Spray paint will work well in the bathroom, is quicker than traditional paints and, as long as it's sealed properly, will withstand the additional moisture present in the bathroom.

Painting Cabinets

Whether using traditional latex paint or Krylon spray paint, preparation is an essential element of the process. A thorough cleaning is the first step and will help remove any debris or gunk from the surface. Most man-made materials do best with an ammonia-based cleaner, while wood should be wiped down with a mild soap and water, and stone requires a pH neutral cleanser. A light sanding will remove any surface stains, nicks or scratches and creates a rough texture for the primer to adhere to. All paints require that a layer of primer be laid down with a foam roller. Krylon spray paint is available in a number of colors and textures which are ideal for bathroom use. The formula of the paint will stick to just about any surface without streaking or running. Once the paint has dried, a layer or two of polyurethane should be applied to prevent scratching or other damage.

Decorative Paints

When updating an old cabinet, a new countertop will complete the look. Krylon paint offers a line of products that will help create a faux-stone countertop for a fraction of the cost. The Make it Stone! line of products creates a stone-like texture in just a few hours. These paints come in a wide range of colors and will create a semi-glossy texture ideal for most d cor. A granite look is also possible by combining three different colors in contrasting shades. The base coat is applied and then flecked with the other shades to create the characteristic look of granite. This stippling is done using a sea sponge or textured roller to achieve the pitted appearance of stone.

Teenage Boys' Bedrooms Color Ideas

Blue is a traditonal color for a teenage boy's room.

When decorating your teenage son's bedroom, color has nearly everything to do with the decor. The easiest way to inject a dose of color into your son's bedroom is to start with the walls. You can mix and match the furniture, as well as the accessories, to complement the walls. Give your son a voice when choosing the paint color for his room. Work closely with him to ensure that his space is exactly how he wants it. You can choose from several variations of colors that would be fitting for a teenage boy's room.

Traditional Blues

The color blue is, traditionally, a color chosen for boys. If your teen wants to keep in line with the color blue, there are a wide variety of blue shades to choose from ranging from dark to light. For a twist, paint two walls a dark shade of blue and the two remaining walls a light shade for contrast. Furniture and accessories in shades of blue, white and cream will work well for the space.

Bright Bold Neons

Bright oranges and neon greens are the ideal hues for a teenage boy who enjoys the energy of vibrant colors. You can paint all the walls in the same neon shade or paint each wall a different color. For the furniture and accessories, select funky pieces that will go hand in hand with the brightly painted walls.

Rich Earth Tones

If your teenage son is a bit more mature, he might prefer rich earth tones, which are common shades that an adult man might choose for his clothing or home d cor. Rich browns, burgundy and various shades of gold are the types of colors that might work well as paint colors for the room. Paint the walls in the same shade, and use gold paint for stencil work or accents. For the furniture and accessories, select antique pieces that will coordinate well with the richly colored walls.

Glow-in-the-Dark

If your teenage son is a science-fiction buff, a room that glows in the dark might be a good choice for him. A wide variety of glow-in-the-dark paints are available in paint stores. You can choose to paint all of the walls a dark shade, such as black, and then paint designs or pictures on top of it with the glow-in-the-dark paints. Alternatively, you can paint two or more walls with the glow-in-the-dark paint exclusively. For the furniture and accessories, select simple pieces that will not overwhelm the already bright walls.

Paint A Small Bedroom

Paint a Small Bedroom

Painting can be an easy and inexpensive way to freshen up a space. When choosing paint colors, be sure to take into account the size of the space as well as the amount of natural light. A larger space or a space with a lot of windows can handle a darker or richer color without being overwhelming. In a small bedroom space, it is best to stick to lighter colors. If a darker color is a must, consider painting just one wall in the darker color as an accent wall.

Instructions

1. Prepare the room. Remove all artwork from the walls including any nails. Remove all hardware from light plates, electrical outlets and window coverings. Move the furniture to the center of the room and drape with drop cloths or old sheets. If the room is too small to do this, furniture may need to be removed. Put a drop cloth or plastic over the floor. This can be taped to the floorboard to avoid movement and paint seeping through to the floor.

2. Prepare the walls. If the walls are dirty, consider washing the walls before painting. This will ensure a smoother application of paint. Apply filler to any nail holes, allow to dry and sand to produce a finish even with the surrounding wall. If the current wall color is darker than the new paint color, prime the walls first to prevent bleed through or multiple coats of the new paint.

3. Tape the woodwork. Using painter's tape, tape off all woodwork that will not be painted. This includes baseboards, crown molding and wood around doors and windows. Take your time with this step and be sure that woodwork is covered well to avoid having to touch up the woodwork after painting is complete.

4. Paint the room. Cut in around the borders of the room and in corners with a small brush or a cut-in roller. Using a large roller, paint the walls by drawing the letter "M" repeatedly. This will avoid paint lines and streaks in the paint that often occur if up and down strokes are used. After the first coat has been applied, allow the paint to dry. Inspect the walls to determine if a second coat should be applied. Apply the second coat, if needed, in the same way as the first.

5. Pour leftover paint in small glass jars and label it with the paint name, manufacturer, date and the room where it was used. This will make touch-ups at a later date easier to accomplish.

Teach Children Proper Bathroom Etiquette

The bathroom can be a breeding ground for germs, but it can also be a place of intrigue and interest for children. Of course kids can find a way to entertain themselves just about anywhere. As offensive as it may seem to adults, children may like to play in the bathroom. It is important that parents teach children good hygiene and proper bathroom etiquette at an early age.

Instructions

1. Teach children the importance of hand washing, especially after using the bathroom. Germs are often spread through lack of proper hand washing. Young children tend to stick their fingers in their mouths. You don't want your child doing this or getting something to eat with unwashed hands. Unsanitary practices can cause illness. Stress the importance of hand washing to your child.

2. Accompany young children to the bathroom. Young children may tend to play in the toilet, flush repeatedly or let the water run in the sink or bathtub. Young children may also flush small objects such as toys down the toilet which can lead to a big mess and an expensive plumbing bill.

3. Prevent accidents from happening by taking small children to the bathroom and waiting either inside or outside the door until they are done. Not only can young children make a mess in the bathroom, but injuries can occur as well. A small child playing in running water could slip and fall if the floor becomes wet. He may also try to stand on the bathtub, or he may climb up on the toilet and fall. Don't let an unsupervised child remain in the bathroom for an extended length of time.

4. Teach children to clean up after themselves. If you start teaching your children to clean up after themselves at a young age, they will develop good habits that will last a lifetime. Teach your children to flush the toilet after each use, dry their hands and throw tissues and paper towels in the trash can.

5. Teach little boys to lift the seat when using the toilet to prevent accidental drips. Remind them to put the seat back down when they have finished. The females in the family will appreciate the consideration.

6. Teach children to knock before entering the bathroom in the event that the bathroom door does not lock or the person has forgotten to lock it. This is a good habit to put into practice in public restrooms as well.

7. Make sure to use sanitary measures when your child needs to use a public restroom. Enter the bathroom stall before your child to make sure it is clean. Place a disposable cover on the toilet seat before allowing your child to use the bathroom. Wash both your own hands and your child's hands when done. Use a hand sanitizer to protect against germs.

Bedroom Bedding Ideas

The right bedding helps make a bed the centerpiece of the room.

Bedding consists of sheets, blankets, pillows and skirts that turn a plain mattress into an attractive and comfortable place to sleep. A bed provides the largest decorative area in most bedrooms, and makes the bedding selection a main focal point in the room design. If you're dressing up a plain bed with decorative pillows or switching country-style bedding for modern, a simple change in bedding is a quick way to makeover a dull bedroom.

Casual Kid

Kids require attractive and cheerful bedding that can withstand ample abuse. Basic bedding styles without delicate details, such as lace trim or buttoned flaps, work best for an energetic child's bed. A simple set of dark blue sheets, light blue pillowcases, a red bed skirt and a green-and-yellow striped blanket form a cheerful style that suits a boy or girl.

Cheerful Country

Mix lace and colorful patchwork to give a bedroom a cheerful country flair. Plain white sheets and a white bed skirt with white lace overlay provide a versatile base that matches any quilt colors. A patchwork quilt with matching pillowcases adds a cheerful homemade touch to the bed. White lace decorative pillows complement the bed's skirt and provide a touch of old-world charm.

Fancy Modern

The sleek look of silk and a sharp geometric pattern provide the key elements for a modern bedding style with a fancy flair. Black silk sheets, black silk pillowcases and a tailored black silk bed skirt add a subtle touch of elegance to the basic bed. A tailored duvet with a geometric pattern that includes hints of black complements the sleek sheets and forms sharp lines for a crisp look. Square decorative pillows that match the duvet add detail to the ensemble without disrupting the clean silhouette.

Funky Teen

Bedding with bright colors and a youthful design adds a cheerful and funky touch to even the dullest teen bedroom. An aqua, baby or turquoise blue comforter with white or cream dots adds an amusing accent and is easy to accessorize. White or cream sheets keep the bedding style crisp against the dots and jade or lemon sheets enhance the youthful elements of the style. Any decorative pillows that combine the comforter and sheet colors help tie the style together, such as jade pillows with white-dotted aqua trim.

Romantic Classic

Bring warmth and romance into your bedroom with classic bedding selections that look and feel indulgent. Satin sheets and pillowcases in a soft hue, such as dusty rose or tan, create an inviting style for the basic bed. A matching ruffled bed skirt forms soft lines for a subtle, yet classic, touch.

A thick comforter with satin trim that echoes the sheet tones adds a sense of classic luxury to the rich bedding. For example, a burgundy and dusty rose comforter with a floral pattern matches the rose sheets and provides a traditional romantic appearance. A mocha and tan comforter with a paisley pattern matches the tan sheets and provides a regal romantic appearance.

Window Treatments For Modern Bedrooms

Natural wood shutters are a trendy window treatment for a modern bedroom.

Bedroom windows call for privacy as well as decorative style. The 2010 trends, according to Smith & Noble merchandising manager Kara Roberts, are cleaner lines, less frill and more tailored, urban looks. (See References 1) Add color with tailored fabric toppers, cornices or valances and look toward neutral, natural treatments for bedroom windows.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds or shades are available in many different styles, fabrics and textures. The flat panel folds are tailored and linear---just right for today's look. Available in a palette of colors, Roman blinds can be selected in sheer, semi-opaque or room darkening styles. The blinds are easily layered with a valance, drapery or panels. (See References 2)

Natural Woven Wooden Shades

Bamboo and reed woven shades have, in the past, been seen on porches or in sun rooms, but recently they've come indoors to more formal settings. With their neat, clean appearance and excellent sun-blocking and privacy qualities, they combine a trendy look with function. A grass mat-style window treatment offers a tropical feel. Most woven shades can be painted to match or complement décor---or leave them natural and top with a colorful or print-type cornice or valance. (See References 3)

Shutters

Interior wood shutters are available in many styles. Plantation shutters are a good choice for the bedroom because they can be closed completely or tilted open at an angle during the evening for privacy. They can also be tilted wide open during the day for air and sunlight. Plantation shutters can also be tied at the top and bottom---to keep bottom shutters closed and the top open or vice versa.

Solid colonial panel shutters are another option. While they must be left open to allow in light and air, shutters can be backed with sheers for more privacy. Traditional shutters can be installed as an accent upon window frames. All wooden shutters can be painted or stained to match or complement your room décor. To make your room appear larger, paint your walls a light neutral color and paint your window shutter the same color. (See References 4)

Wooden Venetian Blinds

Wooden slats are the new twist on the old metal Venetian blinds. They are available in different finishes, from wood stains to painted or pickled finishes for a clean, chic look. They can be opened and closed with a chord and their fabric tapes come in a wide variety of colors to match your décor. (See References 5)

Draw Disney Murals In Bedrooms

Disney characters have long been popular in wall murals, especially for kids. Drawing a Disney mural on a bedroom wall doesn't have to be a complicated process. By following the steps from rough drawing to finished product, you should be able to draw and paint a Disney mural on any bedroom wall in your home.

Instructions

1. Decide what kind of Disney mural you'd like, whether it's a montage of Disney images or something that resembles a scene from a Disney movie. This information will help you narrow down the types of reference images you must find.

2. Get reference materials, such as Disney posters, books, VCR jackets or pictures from the Internet. You'll want materials that are iconic, such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck or the 101 Dalmatians.

3. Create several thumbnail sketches in your sketchpad.

4. Draw some roughs of your design ideas in your sketchbook and color them in with the colored pencils. These should look close to the way you want the finished art to look. In both the thumbnail and the color-rough stage, you'll want to work out any design flaws, composition difficulties and color choices.

5. Draw your final drawing in your sketchbook. This is the small-scale version of the drawing that you're going to enlarge for your Disney mural. You'll want to make sure that all the flaws to your drawing and composition are worked out. If they are not, the flaws will show up in your murals.

6. Buy the paint necessary for the job. Bring along your finished scale drawing so that you can compare colors. Disney colors are typically bright. You can use a mix of latex paint for large areas that are going to be painted a single color and artist's quality acrylic for the more detailed areas.

7. Prepare the wall for painting. This might include washing it down, sanding out rough spots or filling in holes. The better the painting surface, the longer the mural will last. You can set up the lights if you think you'll need them at this point as well.

8. Enlarge your final drawing and draw it on the wall. You can use a grid, an opaque or overhead projector. The opaque projector is probably the least amount of work because all you have to do is insert your drawing into it, and it'll project an enlarged version of your drawing onto the wall. You then is trace the lines of your drawing, which are projected onto the wall.

9. Block out the large color areas and paint them. These are typically background or sky areas that might only be one large wash of color. Let this area dry.

10. Paint the smaller, more detailed areas. Let dry. Your Disney image will emerge by the end of this step.

11. Stand back and assess your mural. Correct any areas that need to be corrected.

12. Clean your brushes with turpentine and Dove bar soap. Rinse thoroughly.

Decorate Retro Bedrooms For Girls

Bright psychedelic patterns are popular retro designs of the 1960s and '70s.

Colorful, splashy and vibrant, retro bedroom decor offers girls an opportunity to express a bold personal style in their own personal space. Zebra-patterned, faux-fur-covered sling chairs might co-exist with bright orange shag rugs and rainbow-colored bead curtains. From the bright pinks and polka dots of the 1950s through the tie-dyed flower-powered 1960s and glitzy disco 1970s, retro decor can be eclectic and gaudy in color, fabric and design.

Instructions

1950s Era

1. Choose a 1950s theme that suits your girl's personality. A 1950s theme might depict the birth of rock 'n' roll, with the popular pink-painted walls covered with posters of rock stars, such as Elvis Presley, from that era. Your girl might prefer a "bobby-soxer" theme, with pink poodles, ponytails, ribbons, bobby sox and saddle shoes.

2. Select window curtains and bed linens made from natural cotton in solid colors, polka dots or depicting some element of your chosen theme. Look for patterns with little poodles, musical notes, 45-speed records, saddle shoes or Elvis photo reproductions.

3. Decorate walls with a collage of magazine covers and fan and movie posters from the 1950s era. Include Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Rock Hudson, Gregory Peck and Marlon Brando. Find old copies of "LIFE" and "LOOK" magazines at antique stores and estate sales.

1960s Era

4. Choose a 1960s theme to guide your decor colors, designs and accessories. Include elements of the hippie movement or the "British invasion" of musical and fashion talent, such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Mary Quant or Twiggy.

5. Hang strings of multicolored plastic beads from curtain rods to create a 1960s-era window covering. Cover the bed with tie-dyed bed sheets and pillow cases.

6. Mount a display of peace symbols or oversized daisy flowers in bright lime green, sapphire blue, orange, yellow and red on a shelf or head-board. Create a wall collage of posters and album covers from favorite musical or fashion trends from the 1960s.

1970s Era

7. Integrate elements of popular 1970s culture into your bedroom decor. Replace an overhead light fixture with a sparkling disco ball for a 1970s look. Paint walls a glittery silver. Hang sequined curtains in the windows.

8. Place a lava lamp on a bedside stand. Cover the floor in a bright, thick shag rug. Drape a faux-fur animal-skin or psychedelic patterned bedspread atop brightly colored bed linens.

9. Choose wall displays from popular 1970s television shows, such as Scooby or Shaggy from "Scooby Doo" or The Fonz from "Happy Days." Situate a pair of bean bag chairs across from the bed.

Care For A Veneer Dining Table

Care for a Veneer Dining Table

Veneer dining tables are covered with a thin layer of decorative and functional material (usually wood, but laminate can be used as well). Just by looking, you won't easily tell the difference between cherry-veneer covered tables and solid cherry-wood, for example. Veneer dining tables require similar care and cleaning as wood furnishings. You can use water for cleaning veneer, but avoid leaving standing water on the surface if the veneer is wood.

Instructions

1. Dust veneer dining tables frequently (at least once a week). Dust tends to attract more dust, and over time this will make the veneer look dull.

2. Use place mats and coasters when dining at the table. This will protect the surface from condensation from glasses and heat from pots or plates.

3. Clear and clean the table soon after dining. Spills left untended are likely to leave stains on the veneer--wipe them with a damp cloth as soon as you see them. For hard-to-remove food spills, use a soft cloth to clean the table. Use water and a mild detergent if necessary, and rinse the table well to remove traces of the detergent, or it can leave the finish looking dull.

4. Use a polish that the table's manufacturer recommends for the finish on your wood veneer dining table. If you dust your table frequently with a soft cloth, this should be sufficient to keep its polished look most of the time. The Oak Store in Mesa, Arizona, recommends polishing only once every six months.

Laminate veneer should not require polishing (except with a soft cloth).

What Is Dining Room Interior Designing

What Is Dining Room Interior Designing?

Planning a dining room that looks good and functions well can be a daunting task. Learn a few tips and tricks before you go shopping to make sure you select the right items for your room and avoid costly mistakes.

What's the Purpose?

People often look at dining rooms as an afterthought and think as long as a table and chairs fit in the room, that's all it really needs. A well-planned dining room can provide a haven from the outside world, draw the family together and make dinner something to linger over.

Where to Start

Build a scrapbook filled with pictures from magazines of things that seem appealing as well as things that seem appalling. The reason for this is that many people "think" they know what they like but then go shopping and find it an exercise in frustration. Pictures can convey much more of an idea of what you can and can't live with.

Needs and Wants

Make a list of wants and needs for the room. Needs would be a table and chairs. Wants would be area rugs and window treatments. Focus on the needs first, then address the wants. Don't be frustrated if you have to purchase items one at a time. A well-designed room looks like it developed over time, not purchased all at once.

Key Components

A table with leaves can accommodate extra guests, and have at least two additional chairs. Use an area rug under the dining table and chairs. Lighting can make more of a statement than almost any other piece in the room.

Finishing Touches

Many big-box stores have high-end designers selling collections geared to the masses that sell for reasonable prices. You can often purchase a service for eight that looks like the ones sold in high-end boutiques less than $40.

Fun Fact

Hundreds of years ago, the master of the household always had his own special chair, and food provided to guests was called the "board." Over time, this position of power changed in the English lexicon and became "chairman of the board."

A Frame To A Bathroom Mirror

Upgrade that boring bathroom sheet of glass with a framing kit.

Framing the bathroom mirror will spruce up the entire look of the room. Many contractors for homes, condominiums and apartment buildings will use a plain sheet of glass glued to the bathroom wall as the standard mirror. While this type of mirror is functional and serves its purpose, the look it creates remains boring and bland. Anyone can frame that boring sheet of glass and turn it into an elegant mirror with mirror framing kits.

Instructions

1. Draw a rough diagram of the mirror on a sheet of white paper. Measure the top and bottom of the mirror--the width--with measuring tape. Add these measurements to the top and bottom of the mirror on paper. Measure each side of the bathroom mirror--the height--and write these measurements down on the diagram as well.

2. Order your custom mirror frame online or in home improvement stores. Give the mirror measurements to the associate, or fill-in the online form at the mirror framing kit store.

3. Replace the bathroom mirror's big clips with the kit's included smaller mirror clips. Unscrew each old mirror clip, one at a time, with a screwdriver. Screw the new smaller mirror clips in place after you remove the old clips.

4. Clean the mirror with window cleaner to remove all dirt, smudges or oils that may be on the glass.

5. Place the four pieces of the mirror frame on a flat surface, with decorative side facing down. Match up each four corners with the corresponding frame piece. Most framing kits will label their pieces with 1, 2, 3, 4 or A, B, C, D.

6. Tighten the corner joints and screw the pieces together with the framing kit's included screws and a screwdriver.

7. Enlist a friend or family member to hold the mirror frame in place over the bathroom mirror to test for fit. Remove the frame and set aside.

8. Refer to the framing kit's included instructions for epoxy glue placement. Most frames will adhere to the bathroom mirror by placing quarter-sized dots of the included two-part epoxy glue onto the bathroom mirror glass. Glue placement will be on the bottom and both sides of the mirror glass, evenly spaced apart.

9. Place the mirror frame back over the mirror glass with the included top frame hooks fitting over the top of the bathroom mirror edge. Using your helper, apply pressure to the frame over the glue locations. Keep this pressure applied to the frame over the mirror until the epoxy glue sets up firm, about a minute to two minutes time.

10. Remove your hands from the mirror slowly, while watching for frame displacement. Apply further pressure if mirror frame pulls away from the bathroom mirror.
