Creative Ideas To Decorate A Bedroom

Decorating a bedroom takes a little bit of creativity.

Redecorate your boring, lifeless bedroom with ideas that will make it look like it came straight out of a magazine. You'll find dozens of ways to decorate your room using different accessories or themes. Simple materials, such as paint, can even transform your entire bedroom. With easy projects that you can do yourself, it's a snap to create a stylish bedroom.

Headboard

With a bit of creativity, you can create your own headboard in different ways. If you want to make own upholstered headboard, place a thin piece of foam over plywood in any shape that you like and use a staple gun to cover it with fabric.

Another idea is to have fabric hanging down from a valance above your bed. If you find an large, decorative wrought-iron grill or paneled screen, these can be used as headboards as well.

Wall Art

Instead of the usual posters or painting, decorate your room with different kinds of wall art. Find an image or photograph that you like, have the image enlarged, cut it out in even squares and hang it on your wall like tiles. Or stretch fabric of your choice over a frame (found in most craft stores in varying sizes) using a staple gun. Likewise, you can create a triad of stretched fabric over canvas and hang the art work side-by-side on your wall.

Themed Bedroom

A theme can either be a style such as a country, Asian, tropical or nautical bedroom, or by decorating with a specific pattern or color in mind, such as a blue-themed bedroom. A theme for a bedroom allows you to focus your creativity when it comes to choosing almost everything that you'll need to decorate your room, such as the furniture and accessories. For a nautical theme, for example, instead of a regular bed, you might want one shaped like a boat. Or for a country-styled bedroom, you might opt for lace curtains and heart-shaped wall art.

Painting Walls

Painting your walls to decorate your room can be achieved in a number of ways. Paint vertical or horizontal stripes in a room with almost as many colors as you like. Stripes can be painted using varying widths or equal widths.

You can also use magnetic primer that you can paint over to create a magnetic surface on a wall in your room that you can use to attach photographs. Additionally, find paint that creates a blackboard surface, which is a creative idea when painted along the bottom half of a kids' bedroom, so they can draw on their walls.

Problems With Unsanitary Restaurant Dining Rooms

State health standards require restaurants to maintain sanitary dining conditions.

An unsanitary restaurant dining room is a health hazard for customers and workers. It also greatly diminishes the appearance and overall professionalism of the establishment, signaling to customers that the ownership doesn't care about how the place looks or how the business performs. Customers who choose to dine in such conditions are doing so at risk to their health.

Dining Room Problem Areas

The dining rooms of most restaurants across the country are cleaned by servers at the end of the evening. These employees may have already worked over eight hours before cleaning, and this fatigue may cause them to miss certain spots that become problem areas if left unchecked over time. When sitting at a table, observe the levels of condiments--if salt and pepper shakers have been refilled and rotated. Discolored salt or encrusted pepper shakers are often an indication that these have not been properly cleaned or rotated in some time. When sitting in a booth, run a finger or napkin in the crevice where the seat cushion meets the seat back. Food particles and other objects often accumulate in this space. A quality service staff will clean these areas nightly to avoid unsanitary conditions in the dining room.

Risk of Foodborne Illness

An unsanitary dining room increases the risk of food-borne illness for patrons as well as restaurant workers. Improperly cleaned surfaces, silverware and plates can easily transmit harmful bacteria if guests are allowed to eat using them or if restaurant workers are not properly washing hands in accordance with the United States Department of Agriculture mandated health and safety standards. A 2009 study published in the "American Journal of Tropical Hygiene and Medicine" found that 20 percent of desserts tested at Houston, Texas, restaurants were contaminated with coliform and E coli bacteria. These bacteria can cause severe flu-like symptoms and even death if ingested.

Reporting Unsanitary Conditions

The largest problem with reporting unsanitary conditions in restaurants may be the state health department's ability to respond to them. The 2007 closing of a rat-infested restaurant in Greenwich Village, New York, illustrated that the Health Department lacks appropriate avenues to respond to multiple-complaints of a single restaurant. The New York Health Department's own assessment of its responses to complaints was termed "inadequate" even when one person complained of a rat bite while eating at the establishment. This is because the system is designed to ignore multiple calls about one establishment and looks on them as "redundant."

Miosha Standards For Public Restrooms

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) does not have jurisdiction over public restrooms. However, they do regulate toilet facilities for employees.

Toilets

MIOSHA requires employee toilets to have an open-front, hinged seat.

Toilets must be provided for all employees. The facilities must be separated by gender unless the toilet is in an individual room that locks from the inside. MIOSHA provides charts to calculate the necessary number of toilets and requires that gender be taken into consideration as well the number of employees. For instance, four toilets are enough for up to 80 employees, but if 78 of those employees are female, it is not legal to place only two toilets in the women's facility.

Urinals

In a men's only facility, one-third of the required toilets may be replaced by urinals.

Sinks

Sinks with hot and cold running water or tepid running water must be provided. The number of required sinks is determined by a chart similar to the chart for toilets.

Other Considerations

In a multiple toilet facility, each toilet must be in a separate stall with enough space around the toilet to allow for easy cleaning. Toilet paper, soap, trash recepticles and hand towels or air dryers must also be provided.

Make A White Bedroom

Use white to create a romantic feeling in a bedroom.

Your bedroom can be your own personal oasis, and a white bedroom can create a Zen-like, peaceful environment. A monochromatic white bedroom opens up a small bedroom and pulls together the elements of a large room. To add interest to a white-on-white color scheme, mix it up with variety of textures and patterns. Vintage pieces and soft lighting can add the ideal finishing touch.

Instructions

1. Choose a white paint color for the walls. There are a wide range of whites to choose from and the color you choose can add to the atmosphere you are trying to create. Use crisp, brighter whites for a cool, contemporary look, and pale cream for a softer feeling. Gray whites can lend an air of sophistication, while a pink-tinged white will create a romantic ambiance. If you feel adventurous, try painting different tones on different walls to produce depth.

2. Position the bed so as to create a focal point and make it attractive with white linens, fluffy pillows and textured bedspreads. Mix all-white patterns for an impressive look. Use a vintage white metal headboard, a white-painted wicker headboard or consider a tufted upholstered headboard for dramatic visual impact. Use a mix of periods for the other white furniture in the room for an interesting and stylish impression.

3. Cover the floor with plush carpeting in a creamy white color. Use area rugs in shades of white if you have beautiful hardwood flooring. The contrast between the dark wood of the flooring will make the whites in the room stand out even more.

4. Accessorize with white lamp shades and throw pillows. Add vintage furniture like an antique white wicker hope chest, writing desks and white metal chairs to add character to the room. Hang shabby chic chandeliers to give the white room a dreamy look with soft lighting.

Renovate A Dining Room Hutch

Renovation turns your old hutch into an heirloom.

A beautiful hutch serves as the showpiece of your dining room, so it should be as beautiful as the treasures stored inside. If yours looks shabby or out-of-date, consider renovating rather than replacing it. You can return your hutch to its former glory or give it an entirely new look. You can re-stain a wood hutch or one with thick veneer. You'll get better results if you paint a hutch with thin veneer. In the end, you'll have a beautiful, custom piece of furniture and the satisfaction of knowing that you did it yourself.

Instructions

Prepare the Hutch for Painting or Staining

1. Remove the hardware, including drawer pulls, knobs and door hinges using a screwdriver. Store the hardware in a zip bag for safekeeping. Purchase new knobs and drawer pulls if you'd like to replace the existing ones.

2. Use painter's tape to cover the edges of any glass sections to protect the glass from the paint or stain. Leave all of the wood exposed.

3. Sand the hutch to bare wood if it's made of solid wood or thick veneer and its finish is stain. Begin with a coarse sandpaper to remove scratches and scuffs, then use progressively finer papers to smooth the surface. Dull the finish with fine sandpaper if the hutch is stained and its surfaces are thin veneer. Wipe off the sawdust with a damp cloth.

4. Strip the hutch if it's painted or if the stain has a shellac or polyurethane finish. Apply a paint stripper according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the stripper to remain on the furniture for the length of time the manufacturer recommends. The paint or other finish will begin to bubble when it's ready to be scraped away.

5. Scrape off as much as you can with a putty knife. Scrub crevasses that the knife can't reach with a wire brush. Allow the wood to dry.

6. Sand the hutch to remove remaining paint and to smooth the wood's surface. Use fine paper for thin veneer. Begin with coarse paper and progress to fine if the hutch is solid wood or thick veneer and the surface is damaged. Clean the wood surfaces with a damp cloth.

To Stain the Hutch

7. Stain the hutch with a one-step product that combines stain and polyurethane. Use a good-quality, natural-bristle brush. Dip the brush about 1/2 inch into the can of stain, then apply it to the wood in a very thin layer using even strokes that run with the grain. Allow the stain to dry for the length of time the manufacturer recommends.

8. Scuff the surface with steel wool to dull the shine and prepare the finish for a second coat of one-step stain/polyurethane. Wipe off the dust with a damp cloth

9. Apply a second coat of stain. Brush on a thin layer, as with the first coat, working with the grain. Allow the finish to dry and cure for the length of time the manufacturer recommends before you place heavy objects on the surface.

To Paint the Hutch

10. Paint the hutch with an oil-based primer and a latex paint using a good-quality brush. Prime the hutch using light, even strokes that run with the grain. Apply a second coat to obtain even coverage, if necessary. Paint the hutch in the same manner. Brush on thin coats that run with the grain. Allow the paint to dry for the length of time the manufacturer recommends before repainting.

11. Distress your painted cabinet, if desired, by adding stain over the paint. Brush the stain on the hutch, working the stain into the recesses and joints. Let the stain sit for a moment, then wipe it off with a soft, dry cloth. Allow some stain to remain in the joints and recesses. Continue to apply and remove stain until you've achieved the desired result.

12. Apply a topcoat of polyurethane using a good-quality paintbrush, if desired, to protect the painted surface. Brush on a thin coat of polyurethane in the direction of the grain. Allow the polyurethane to dry thoroughly. Scuff the surface with steel wool. Lay an additional coat of polyurethane to even out the finish.

Decorating Ideas For A Rustic Bedroom

Hardwood floors look lovely in a rustic bedroom.

Your bedroom should be your haven and your respite from the world. One lovely way to decorate your bedroom is in a warm and rustic style. This interior decorating style incorporates colors and textures found in nature. Use wood and warm colors such as brick-red, gold, terracotta and green. Tuscan style incorporates a lot of rustic decor.

Natural Materials

Use natural materials such as cedar to make the bed. Paint the walls in a very soft brown color or a dark cream color. Add a leather bench at the end of the bed. Also, use colors found in nature for the linens and window treatments. Use colors such as green and sage green.

Log Cabin

A master suite that is reminiscent of a log cabin will make you feel as though you are on vacation all of the time. Incorporate wrought iron in the bed. Add vintage items throughout the room such as old clocks. Vintage chests in this room add to the rustic appeal. Hardwood floor is ideal in a rustic log cabin. Exposed wood beams on the ceiling finish off this look.

Vintage

Create a vintage style rustic bedroom with a white bed, dresser and desk. Hang pink mosquito netting above the bed and put a soft, sage green comforter on the bed. Gold paint with a green accent wall adds to the rustic and vintage decor. Place wall decals on the walls and ceiling in the shape of stars.

Tips For A Decorative Trim For A Framed Dining Room

Complicate trimwork should be well supported by good framing.

A framed dining room is the dining room at the stud or framing stage. At this point the room doesn't have drywall installed. This is the perfect time to think about, plan and install the blocking you need for the finish trims in the dining room. Most trims require solid wood inside the wall to nail to. Frequently this step is overlooked and drywall is installed over standard stud walls. When it's time to install the trim, the carpenter is only able to find the occasional stud. This just doesn't work for elaborate trims which may consist of more than seven pieces for a single molding.

Trim Selection

Dining rooms are often the most highly decorated and trimmed room in the house. Many people use more expensive finished materials in the dining room because they intend to sit in the room for long hours with their guests. The planning stage for trims should begin when the home is being designed, and all of the elaborate trims should be approved prior to framing. A single crown molding that is hand built can span 15 inches and include seven or more pieces of trim material. When this type of molding is designed, there is a substantial void behind the trims that should be used for support framing for the trim.

Designer Framing

By designing the framing to coordinate with the trimwork, the finish carpenter has a solid surface to nail the trim to. This allows the trim to be installed so that it is tight to the wall. In many homes, construction adhesive is the current solution to differences between the trim and drywall. This indicates that the walls are not level and straight and that inadequate trim framing was installed at the time the house was framed. It means the trim was an after-thought. When you look closely at the trim you are likely to see slipped joints, an overuse of caulk to hide poor seams and trim that is pulling away from the wall.

Straight and Level

Each stud in the framed dining room should be checked for straight and level. Blocking should be added for the smooth support of drywall or other wall finishes. Additional framing should be installed by positioning mock-ups of the finished trims at their future locations and developing the correct framing to support those trims later in the finishing phase of construction. This may require bringing in the finish carpenter to work with the framing carpenter to develop and install the correct blocking and framing.

Clean Design

Trim moldings look best when they are balanced and evenly spaced. When the dining room is in the design stage the architect and the finish carpenter should discuss the finish trim ideas. In this type of design, everything counts. The placement of light switches, outlets, sconces and other features has great impact on the finished look of the trims. When possible the actual size of the room is carefully scaled so that panels, doorways and windows are exactly positioned and balanced to prevent awkward or orphaned sizes and placements. When the dining room is framed, each detail of the preplanning should be double checked to make sure the framing is spot on and that no detail has been missed.

Bathrooms Of The 1940s

Many older homes still have 1940s bathroom fixtures.

Only 55 percent of American homes had indoor plumbing in 1940, according to Lone Star College. People of previous decades perceived the bathroom as a utilitarian room. However, in the 1940s, homeowners decorated the bathroom to reflect their favorite style. Some bathrooms had only a sink and toilet, especially if the home did not have running hot water. Newer construction, however, included a bathtub and running hot water.

Colors

Muted colors dominated early 1940s bathrooms, even though they included reds and blues to show support for the war. Lavender, rouge, autumn brown, old ivory and spring green were also popular during this time, according to Kohler. Peachblow, ice green, cerulean blue and Tuscan shades remained popular colors throughout the decade.

Floor and Walls

Tile and linoleum were the main flooring materials. Bathroom walls displaying tiling from floor to ceiling in the tub area was another new trend. Previously, all four walls had tended to comprise part tile and part wallpaper. Glass-covered prints and wall sculptures added decorative touches.

Lighting

A standard ceiling light fixture was common in most homes. Track lighting did not become popular until the 1960s. Etched floral patterns adorned many of the light covers. Bathrooms that did not have windows, as was common in row homes, had skylights for ventilation. These bathrooms had wall lighting.

Sinks

Sinks were freestanding rather than enclosed in a vanity. Some homeowners made use of the potential storage area under the sink by enclosing it with a skirt. Some bathrooms had a very small second sink that the family used as a tooth brushing station. Builders in the 1940s started including a medicine cabinet as a standard feature.

Bathtub

Bathtubs in the 1940s resembled our modern fiberglass tubs, with both shower and tub. They did not have feet nor were they freestanding. Lightweight plastic bathtubs had not yet been invented. Shower curtains had floral patterns.

Modern Master Bedroom Ideas

The master bedroom should reflect your personal style.

Creating a modern look in the master bedroom can often be accomplished using existing furniture and sleek sparse items. Although a total room make-over may be ideal, it also may not be in the budget. Integrating small changes can create a huge difference in making the master bedroom look fresh and more modern.

Clean Lines

A key component of modern decor is clean lines. Choose bedroom furniture with flat, straight edges and surfaces. Avoid excessively detailed or carved wood furniture. Choose pictures, mirrors or wall art that is geometric in shape and not overly detailed.

Use Color

Add color to the bedroom. Formerly, bedrooms were generally painted in calming subdued colors. You may choose to paint the walls a bright color. Even if the walls are a calming pale color, you can add a bright new comforter or new pillows in the seating area to brighten up the space.

Natural Lighting

Natural lighting in the bedroom is very common in newer homes and structures. If possible, consider increasing the natural lighting by adding ceiling lights to the room. Increase the existing natural light by getting sheer curtains, or blinds that can be left open during the day.

Minimalist Decorating

Minimalist decorating is common in modern decor. Avoid filling the room with clutter and excessive decorations. Choose furniture and lighting that reflects the decor and colors you want. With the proper look and placement of furniture, extra decorative items are unneeded. If you want to include art in the master bedroom, choose one or two pieces, and make them the focal point of the room.

Clear out the Clutter

Clean and clutter-free is a common theme in modern design. The Good Housekeeping and the Fresh Home websites provide multiple pictures for viewers to see examples of modern design. One of the common themes across each picture is that the rooms are well organized and clutter-free.

Exterminate Ants From A Bedroom

You can't exterminate an ant colony just by killing the ants you see.

An ant infestation in your bedroom is a nuisance, and if you have one you won't stop it by killing the ants you see. To completely eliminate an infestation, you have to destroy the nests and kill the queens. Nests are almost always hidden, and while you may be able to find the general location of one by following the ant trail to its source, pinpointing its exact location can be difficult. A more effective extermination strategy is to feed the ants poison so they can take it to the nest themselves and feed it to the queen.

Instructions

1. Identify the ant species. Collect two or three adults in a plastic bag and either compare them to pictures in a book or on the Internet, or take them to an extermination expert in your locality. Different species have different food preferences, and knowing the species will help you choose an effective bait.

2. Remove all sources of food from the bedroom to which the ants are attracted, but do not disturb the ant trail.

3. Place a container of ant bait next to the trail near the food source to which the ants were attracted. If you have a large infestation, place one or more containers along the trail at strategic locations.

4. Allow the ants to congregate around the bait, but do not spray them. If you kill the ants that are eating the bait, you'll prevent them from taking it back to the nest and feeding it to the rest of the colony and the queen.

5. Caulk the baseboards or floorboards from which the ants were emerging after the infestation subsides to prevent further infestations.

Bedroom Colors

About Bedroom Colors

Taking on a redecoration project can be a little intimidating, but if you understand combine different colors so that they complement each other in some way, it becomes more of a pleasure than a chore. There is no place in the house where proper color schemes are more important than in the bedrooms.

Function

A bedroom is more than a bedroom these days. It is a retreat, a place you can escape to at the end of a long day. It functions as a reading room, an office, a place to enjoy a cup of coffee in peace. The way you decorate your bedroom, especially the color scheme, will do more than reflect your taste. It will make it a peaceful oasis or a vibrant energy source.

Features

Bedroom colors need to complement each other, but your favorite colors might not work well together, no matter how much you like them. You need to use a color wheel to determine which colors go together. There are three ways to combine colors using the color wheel. You can choose a monochromatic color scheme, using different shades of the same color such as green, mint and olive; you can pick colors that are next to each other on the wheel, like green and yellow or blue and green; or, if you want to create a dramatic room, choose colors that complement each other, the ones directly opposite on the color wheel like yellow and violet or red and orange.

Types

For a relaxing atmosphere, neutrals are the way to go. Light shades of green, such as sage, fern and sea mist, are nice base colors with accents in browns and golds.

Ecology is a popular theme with blue for the sky and green for the earth.

For a bedroom that is both dramatic and relaxing, a room done is shades of pink is all the rage. You need a big room to carry this off right, or the single color can become overwhelming.

Considerations

Small bedrooms need extra considerations. Lighter colors will make it seem bigger. Use bright colors for accents. If you want darker walls in a small room, compromise and paint just one wall dark. The contrast between the light and dark wall colors will create an optical illusion, making it seem as if the darker one is farther away.

Effects

The use of color can create any type of space you want, and it can also add to the marketability of your property. The more a buyer can feel like your home creates a harmonious atmosphere, especially in the master bedroom, the greater the likelihood of your house being sold.

Paint Ideas For Wainscoating In A Bathroom

Wainscoating is paneling, traditionally made of wood, that starts at the floor and rises to 36 or 40 inches in height, with paint or wallpaper covering the upper spans of wall. The wainscoating is generally topped with chair-rail trim. It was originally used in dining rooms and kitchens to protect the lower walls from the backs of chairs, and in bathrooms to protect the lower walls from moisture and mildew from the sink and tub. It can still be used for these purposes, as long as high-gloss paint is used, but it's also a great decorating detail.

Old-Fashioned Beadboard

The classic look for bathroom wainscoating is thin-patterned beadboard in a white or cream gloss paint, with a darker, colorful wallpaper above it. If you do this, go all out and make it look like something out of an 1890s apartment house, with heavy floral wallpaper and big, bold chair rail and baseboard trim around the wainscoating. Make sure the wallpaper is moisture-proof, which may not be completely in line with the old-time theme but will help prevent it from steaming off the walls.

The Library Look

If you're going to use real wood in your bathroom, why not go all the way make it look like real wood? Use square raised panels on the waincoating instead of beadboard, and stain it a deep, rich brown or reddish shade, like a formal library. Make sure you cover it with three coats of good polyurethane gloss to protect against mosture. Top the chair rail with a wood shelf and put a few old books on it. Complete the look by painting the upper wall in a deep, rich color like wine red or dark blue.

Mosaic Sunrise

For a fun conversation-piece of a bathroom, use flat, plain wainscoating and paint it an ocean-blue color, with hints of green in it, so it looks like a straight horizon of water. On the wall above, use small mosaic tiles to fashion a mural scene of a sunset over the water, complete with a lighter-blue sky, clouds and birds. Lay a few brushstrokes of yellow onto the blue-green wainscoating under the tiled sun to represent the setting sun's reflection on the water.

Decorate A Small Bedroom With Two Beds

When you are faced with the challenge of decorating a small bedroom with two beds, examine the total available space before placing furniture inside. Look for furniture pieces that can do double duty, such as an ottoman you can sit on that opens up for storage, and pieces that are tall in height yet small in width. Build up the wall and use all the vertical space in the room to your maximum design advantage.

Instructions

1. Arrange the beds in the room. A side-by-side arrangement gives the option of sliding beds together into one large bed for a guest room, while an L-shape setup allows each occupant a little more privacy and more space in the center of the room. You can free up more floor space with a trundle bed, which slides below another bed, or bunk beds, which take up vertical space but little horizontal space.

2. Maximize the storage space. Place both beds on risers so you can slide wheeled drawers or plastic containers with wheels beneath the bed. Fill these drawers with shoes, seasonal items, winter clothes, blankets or toys for a young child. Build bookshelves around window frames to hold books, baskets of toys, trophies and framed photographs.

3. Create different zones within the room. Claim a small corner or the space between two tall dressers for a workspace. Stack plastic containers underneath the desk to hold supplies, while shelves above the desk hold books, backpacks, computer programs and school supplies. A comfortable chair at the foot of the bed or a small fainting sofa off to the side allows for a reading nook.

4. Paint the room. A light-color paint will give the illusion of a larger room, while a darker color paint makes a room appear cozier and smaller. Vertical stripes make a room look taller, as does painting the ceiling and wall the same or a similar color.

5. Dress both beds in similar fabric themes for a pleasing design. Pick opulent fabrics, such as brocade, a raw silk duvet cover or a down comforter for the bedspread. Put a high-thread-count sheet set with a matching skirt and sham on both beds. Pile several comfortable pillows on the beds, including a neck roll pillow.

6. Accessorize the room's tiniest details to give the room a designer touch. Replace the standard light-switch plate with one that coordinates with the d cor. Bring in curtains that highlight the colors in the room and bedding. Add an alarm clock and a box to hold pocket items on the nightstand. Find a good piece of artwork for the walls.

Paint Dining Room Furniture

If you have dining furniture that is marked up or worn looking, but you do not want to spend thousands of dollars replacing it, you may paint it to give it a fresh new look. Painting dining room furniture is an easy way to spruce up an area and it's an inexpensive alternative to refurnishing. It takes only a few tools, a little time and some attention to detail. In one weekend, you can have what amounts to a whole new dining set.

Instructions

1. Move the dining furniture to a well-ventilated area such as a garage and place each piece on a drop cloth. The area should have adequate ventilation but should not be overly breezy to keep dust from clinging to the paint.

2. Fill any holes, grooves and scratches with wood filler, using a putty knife. Sand the furniture with fine-grit sandpaper. Sand enough to smooth the wood filler and to rough the furniture just enough for paint to adhere. Brush each piece with a unused paintbrush to get rid of the sawdust.

3. Apply a coat of primer to each dining room furniture piece with a paintbrush. Prime each piece evenly and completely. Let the primer dry for six to 12 hours or as long as directed by the manufacturer.

4. Apply the first coat of paint to each piece with a paintbrush. Be mindful of edges, the underside of each piece, and the groves and joints. Allow the first coat to dry for about 12 hours. Look on the can for drying time suggestions.

5. Paint a second coat if the first is too thin or the paint is not dark enough. Let the second coat dry, then seal the dining room furniture with paint sealer, using a paintbrush. Let the sealer cure for at least one day, then move the furniture back into the dining room.

Clean An Athenee Dining Table

The Athenee dining table comes from the Kathy Ireland collection of furniture. The Plaza Athenee pedestal dining table is designed in the style of the baroque movement of the 17th century. The table has an inlay of marble at the top and two pedestal legs at the bottom. The wood is polished and stained a medium brown color. After use, the Athenee dining table may need cleaning to return it to its former glory.

Instructions

1. Dampen a cloth with warm water and wipe down the table. Scrub gently to remove any sticky places or food spills.

2. Dab 1 to 2 tsp. of neutral soap or stone soap onto the cloth. Rub the soap onto the table's marble top with the cloth to remove any stains.

3. Rinse off the cloth and wipe down the table with it to remove any soap residue.

4. Wipe off the table with a clean dry cloth.

Clean Wax Buildup On A Dining Room Table

Wooden table

Waxing your dining-room table on a regular basis keeps it looking its best. Over time, wax can build up and dull your table's finish. Trying to apply more wax will just make the situation worse. The excess wax needs to be removed from your dining-room table. Removing the buildup will allow your waxing product to once again work and bring your table to its intended shine.

Instructions

1. Wipe down your dining-room table to clean it of all dirt and debris that is resting on the surface.

2. Open your windows if possible. You will be using mineral spirits, and want to work in a well-ventilated area. Put on gloves.

3. Dampen your cloth with a generous amount of mineral spirits. Rub in the mineral spirits along the grain of the table to remove the wax buildup. Allow the mineral spirits to dry.

4. Buff the table with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove any residue. Touch up with more odorless mineral spirits if needed.

5. Apply a paste wax to your dining-room table with a lint-free cloth, in a circular motion. Paste wax will hide any small scratches and works to repel dust. Wait 15 minutes, then use another cloth to buff the top of your dining-room table to a high shine.

Displaying Collections In An Already Small Bedroom

Utilize wall space for displaying many types of collections.

People who collect stamps, butterflies, art, boxes, medals, miniatures, rocks, shells or other items don't want to hide their "treasures" in a closet or garage. It's ideal when you can display your collection, but it might take a little time to plan how. When you only have a small amount of space to work with, such as a small bedroom, you can still display a reasonable sampling of your collection by getting creative.

Frame and Hang

Find your flattest collection items to group into a collage you can frame. Another approach is to hang your items on the wall directly, atop a black or colored cloth background or with none. School pennants, posters and card collections can either get tacked to the wall, or you can frame them using simple arrangements. A faux frame can even be assembled using slender wood, plastic or fabric strips to outline different elements.

Shallow Shelves

Gather simple bookshelves 4 or 5 inches deep and attach them to a wall using the simplest means possible. A staggering presentation is more interesting than side-by side shelves. Arrange various collection items on each shelf. Small and not too heavy 3-D objects work well with this display.

Shadow Boxes

Another way to show off 3-D collections is to employ the shadow box concept. These are sometimes enclosed, small boxes with multiple sections suitable for one item each. Certain types of shadow boxes enclose all items within one or two sections. The sizes vary, or you can make a customized form if you have the right tools handy. Some shadow boxes have glass or thin, plastic coverings while others don't have anything but the box itself. Several of these grouped together with similar items not only saves space but shows off your collection with ease.

Other Ideas

Arrange collections on top of dressers or other firm-topped furniture. Hat racks work for showing off hat collections. A strip of coat hooks can display fancy scarves or shawls from your travels or be used for your jewelry collection. String up your miniature-flag collection and drape it like a swag from the ceiling. Use the floor or under the bed too. For example, you can glue items such as shells or gemstones to a thin piece of wood and tuck it under your bed. When you want to see or share it, simply slide it out.

Cute Young Adult Female Bedroom Ideas

A beach-inspired bedroom is a good fit for a young woman with a causal style.

Decorating a bedroom for a young woman who has just entered her teen years or is heading off to college can be challenging. She has likely outgrown the decor that she loved as a child and now wants a room that feels more grown-up and sophisticated. However, a mature, sedate bedroom look may not pass muster since young women usually want their room to feel funky and playful as well. Finding a decor style that encompasses all of these elements can be difficult, but there are several options that may fit the bill for the special young woman in your life.

Hollywood Glamor

Hollywood-inspired décor is ideal for a young woman who prefers a glamorous style. Inspired by movie stars of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, the décor is all about luxurious materials and elegant furniture. You can start with a black, white and pink color palette or black, white and teal depending on your preference. However, include silver accents as well. A canopy or four-poster bed fits the theme well, but choose a bed frame with a black lacquered finish and use satin or silk bedding for a luxurious look. To add drama to the room, set a velvet upholstered chaise lounge in front of a window with bold velvet curtains for a look worthy of a movie star. You can also add a vanity or dressing table and decorate it with vintage perfume bottles to recreate the look of a starlet's dressing room. Line the walls with framed photos of Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn to tie the look together.

Coastal Decor

For a young woman with a casual style, coastal décor may be the right fit for her bedroom. However, avoid obvious, beach-inspired murals and accessories that may make the room feel a bit immature. Instead, opt for a simple, understated look. Choose a crisp white, light blue or pale yellow color for the walls, and use the other shades as accent colors. Hardwood flooring is ideal for simulating the look of a beach home, but you can add throw rugs made from natural fibers, such as jute, seas grass or sisal, to add warmth. Wooden furniture with a light colored stain or pale colored paint helps keep the room looking bright and fresh. Sheer white curtains on the windows provide a bright, airy feel and allow plenty of natural light into the room. Simple cotton bedding with a blue and white stripe pattern fits the theme well and provides a chic, casual look.

Bohemian Style

Bohemian décor is an ideal option for a young woman with a creative, free spirit. It is also a stylish choice for anyone on a budget because flea market finds work extremely well with this style. Boho chic décor has no set rules, so you can choose any color palette for your bedroom. However, include black and white elements to help ground the space. You shouldn't be afraid to mix patterns, so try pairing a floral bedspread with striped throw pillows or polka dot curtains with a paisley rug. Antique furniture is ideal, but you can mix pieces from different eras. For example, set an art deco nightstand beside a Victorian style headboard. Decorate the walls with eclectic items like tapestries, oil paintings and vintage concert posters for a whimsical, unique look.

French Country

For a young woman who wants a relaxing bedroom retreat, consider a French country look. Start with a soft color palette that includes shades like sage green, dusty pink, pale yellow, light blue and gray, but include neutral tones like ivory, beige and tan to balance the look. A distressed wooden or a wrought iron bed frame is an ideal focal point for the room, particularly when covered with toile or calico bedding. Lace accents add texture and dimension to the room, so use lacy curtains to give your window a delicate look. You can hang an antique-style chandelier in the center of the room for an elegant look, and decorate the walls with vintage porcelain plates for an authentic French country look.

Decorate Bedroom Themes

Decorate your bedroom with a theme or color scheme that relaxes and revitalizes you.

The theme you center your bedroom decor around should include something that's peaceful, enjoyable and beautiful to you, because that's the space where you start and end each day. Your bedroom should ultimately serve as your safe haven, where you can escape to when the need arises. The theme you use for the decor should also serve your lifestyle and the needs of your partner, if you share your room.

Instructions

1. Choose the theme and color scheme you wish to use in your bedroom. Pick a theme that you find comforting and relaxing. For example, a soft Victorian theme is typically feminine and romantic, a Moroccan theme is usually vibrant and romantic, a beach or nautical theme tends to be relaxing and an Asian-inspired theme often results in a minimalist, modern design.

2. Set the stage for your themed room by painting the walls. If you are unable to paint for any reason, such as renting your home, hang fabric or large artwork instead. Use a softer color or shade for the walls that goes along with your theme. If you want something bold on your walls, consider going bold on one wall, which will be your accent wall.

3. Place your furniture in the room. The furniture should not overcrowd the room, and should relate to the theme. For cottage, French country or themes centered around certain time periods, get authentic furniture from that era if possible. If not, purchase mock furniture that fits in with the theme.

4. Draw upon your theme when selecting chairs, bedding and curtains. For example, a nautical or beach themed room might include a white comforter or duvet with a navy blue border with three rows of navy and white pillows. Use a blue pillow with a white anchor, or a bright red color for the center pillow. A navy chair with a white pillow and white or navy curtains (the color opposite the walls) would complement the room.

5. Accessorize the room with small items and artwork that pull the theme together. For a minimalist Asian themed room, consider black and white framed pictures of inspirational Chinese words, such as "love" and "dream." Add a red pillow to the bed or chair and a white or bamboo area rug. For a jungle themed room, add a house tree, zebra print rug and leopard print pillows. Candles, vases, flowers, lamps and other small items should complete the room. Lava lamps and bright shag rugs could accompany a retro '70s theme.

Spice Things Up In The Bedroom

Romance in the bedroom can be yours again.

Many marriages get into a rut in the romance or intimacy department, but passion doesn't have to be a thing of the past. Spicing things up in the bedroom can also spice things up in your marriage as well. Follow these tips to learn what you can do to excite your partner and probably yourself in the process.

Instructions

1. Set aside some time that you and your partner have alone time together. If this means getting a babysitter or making sure that the kids stay in their own beds, plan your time and make certain that everyone adheres to your schedule. Make the time together intimate time. It doesn't necessarily have to lead to sex but lay on the bed next to each other. Hold hands and just talk.

2. Schedule dates together. Although spontaneity is exciting, careers and family tend to get in the way. Set aside a day or two, or even three, each week to spend a little more quality time with your partner in the bedroom.

3. Leave your partner love notes telling him what he can expect during your next "date night." Be descriptive and don't be afraid to use a little imagination and share with your partner what you fantasize about. A spicy little note can keep your partner going all day in anticipation of what is to come. Tell your partner more about your plan in person when you meet next or on the phone later that day.

4. Role play with your partner. Dress as a nurse or a doctor and ask him if it is time for his next checkup. Make certain that he gets a lollipop. Some couples like to meet in bars and pretend to pick each other up. Costumes can be found in almost any adult store and can be used multiple times during intimate moments.

5. Be generous. Feel free to guide your partner and tell her what makes you feel best. Give as much or even more than you get from her. The key to good loving is taking care of your partner's needs and making certain that your other half understands what your needs are.

6. Break the routine. You may be so used to your everyday life that when you fall into routines it is sometimes very hard to break out. Surprise your partner with an afternoon tryst or wake him up with a little morning love. A little surprise can go a long way to spicing things up.

'70s Bedroom Ideas

Decorating in 1970s style is fresh and original today.

The 1970s was an era characterized by bright, vibrant colors and wild patterns. While many people may associate lava lamps, Led Zeppelin posters, disco and Farrah Fawcett hair with the decade, decorating was about more than cultural iconography. It was about freedom of expression, wild textures, modern streamlined furniture and bold choices (think carpet wallpaper). Channeling the 1970s in decorating will lend retro creativity to your bedroom.

Colors

The colors that epitomize the 1970s are orange (bright or tangerine), brown, beige, blue, green (avocado) and yellow. These colors often were displayed in loud combinations that reflected individual taste. Pick two or three colors from this palette that appeal to you and use them for walls, molding and doors. Or go monochromatic and pick different shades of the same color for a tied-together look.

Textures

Textured fabric was a popular choice for bedspreads, upholstery and wall hangings. Pick up a new or used chair, low-slung or egg shaped and upholstered in carpet fabric, velvet or velour. Classic '70s egg chairs hang from the ceiling, offering an instantly recognizable iconic period design. Interesting textures add a tactile feel to a bedroom, and can make the room extra soft and cozy. Pick up one of your grandmother's needlepoint works as a wall-hanging for a truly '70s piece of art.

Patterns

Once you have your room painted in '70s colors and filled with interesting textured fabrics, pick a pattern of bold dots, orange plaids or geometric lines for curtains, linens and accents. Paint dots on your lampshade to match your bedspread, or on your ceiling fan for an original and functional moving sculpture.

Small Bedroom Storage Tips

Most people don't have a massive bedroom with ample space.

Many people don't possess a massive bedroom that looks like photographers should photograph it for a home and garden magazine. Many people have small bedrooms that can just barely hold a bed, desk and dresser. When it comes to smaller bedrooms, you can still keep them extremely tidy by using your space strategically.

Under the Bed

In nearly every bedroom, the bed is the piece of furniture that sucks up the most space. Take back the space that the bed occupies by utilizing the area under the bed for storage. For example, store items you don't use often in large, low baskets, and slide them under the bed. Or purchase a bed that has built-in storage. Many platform beds come with shelves or drawers already attached, making the need for a dresser obsolete. Other platform beds come with a hydraulic lift system so that you can store larger items directly under the mattress.

Along the Walls

Even if your bedroom lacks square footage, it definitely doesn't lack wall space. Take advantage of the ample wall space that you have and put it to use. For example, install shelves of all different sizes and shapes for your various storage needs. Standard bookshelves are suitable for books, binders, journals and other materials, whereas shelves with glass or wood doors are more appropriate for the things you want to store out of direct sight. Screw hooks into the wall for an additional place to hang clothes.

Maximize the Closet

Once of the issues with small bedrooms is that they often come with small closets, and the contents of the closet can easily spill out onto the rest of the room, making it appear cluttered and even smaller. Prevent this by maximizing your closet's potential. For example, install a second closet rod either above or below the original one. Use this either for clothes that you don't wear often or for low hanging clothes like trousers. Install a top shelf to store out-of-season clothes or hobby apparel that you don't use often like a bicycle helmet or roller blading pads. Install hooks on the available wall space for items like belts, bags and ties.

The Use Of A Gfci Breaker In A Bathroom Circuit

Electrical codes require ground-fault circuit interrupters in bathrooms.

The National Electric Code requires certain locations like bathrooms or other places with wet or damp conditions to have special power receptacles called ground-fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs. GFCI outlets prevent you from being electrocuted due to malfunctions or accidents involving an appliance. The NEC requires that any receptacles on a kitchen countertop, in a bathroom or within 6 feet of any sink be GFCIs.

Electricity and Circuits

Electricity flows through a circuit through a pair of wires--one "hot" and one neutral. The hot wire carries the current from the source--usually a circuit breaker or fuse box to the appliance or fixture. The neutral wire returns the "unused" electricity back to the source. Touching the wires in a circuit will cause a shock, but shocks can also happen due to overloaded or short circuits.

Ground Faults

A ground fault occurs when, because of a short circuit or overload, an electric device becomes an unintended conductor of electricity. In most instances, a ground wire protects you from faults by providing a pathway back to the service panel or to an electrode contract with the earth. If the ground is connected to the service panel, the fault trips a breaker or blows a fuse.

The Danger of Faults

Ground faults can cause electric shocks that are painful, harmful or even deadly. Normally the flow of current between the hot and neutral wire is fairly equal. Faults occur when the flow of electricity through the neutral wire is less than that of the hot wire. Shocks occur when you come between the two wires and the current flows through your body. If you are in contact with water or dampness, the effect can be deadly.

Function of a GFCI

A GFCI outlet contains a microprocessor that constantly measures the current flow in both wires. When the GFCI senses a difference in the flow, it opens the circuit--interrupting the flow--in as little as four-hundredths of a second. When this happens, the red reset button on the GFCI pops out. Once the fault is corrected, pushing the reset button on the receptacle closes the circuit.

Installing a GFCI

GFCI receptacles are not more difficult to install than standard receptacles, although there are more terminals on the GFCI. One set of terminals is the Load; the other is the Line. Current comes into a GFCI through the Line. A GFCI installed as the first receptacle in a run provides protection for all standard receptacles in that circuit. The wiring for the rest of the run is connected to the Line terminals.

Shortcomings of a GFCI

A GFCI receptacle can only work when a fault occurs. If you come between the hot and neutral wires and are not grounded, the flow of current remains equal--except it is flowing through your body. Since the GFCI does not sense a fault, it does not trip.

Types Of Small Dining Tables

A small dining table can provide exquisite dining.

Selecting a dining table for a small dining space can be a challenge. Many people don't realize, though, that an abundance of different kinds of small dining tables can fill their dining needs and dining space perfectly. These smaller tables are packed with features and styles that maximize their functionality and create a pleasant dining atmosphere.

Table with Separate Leaf

A round or square dining table style often is available in small dimensions to accommodate limited dining spaces, and a 12-inch leaf may be available at a minimum price to expand the table for additional guests. Some dining tables with the optional leaf feature have an underside storage space for the leaf. That feature makes it convenient and simple to pop the leaf into place when it is needed.

Drop-Leaf Table

A drop-leaf table offers a functional and stylish option. Two or four of the wood table's sides are attached to the center portion of the table. The sides can be lifted and locked into place when additional table space is needed. They are permanently attached to the table and look attractive and are functional in either position.

Multifunctional Table

The multifunctional table style is actually a hardworking table that takes on several jobs. A small game table with a "flip top" that serves as a flat-surface dining table on one side and a chess, checkers or poker top on the other side serves two completely different purposes. A dining table with a built-in bottom shelf or shelves under its center provides additional storage for items such as dishes, baskets of necessities and fresh table linens.

Dinette Table

A dinette table comes in a variety of materials and small sizes. Glass-, marble- and wooden-top models with a decorative metal or wooden base are economical and popular choices. These tables usually don't include options for expansion, but they can be re-purposed in another room.

Gate-Leg Table

The gate-leg table has a lot of potential in a small dining space. This compact table has two leaves that drop over the side of the table and legs that can swing out like a gate to support the leaves when additional table space is needed. Generally composed of wood, a gate-leg table is available in a variety of decorating styles and is useful as a side table as well as a dining table.

Decorate A Shared Girl'S Bedroom

Designing for two doesn't have to be drab.

If you are on a mission to decorate a room for two girls with two different styles, fret not. It can be done with ease and an end feeling of satisfaction from everyone in your family. Sharing a room with a sister can seem like it is the end of the world for a child, but by designing the room through consesus and imaginative ideas, it is possible to have a succesful outcome .

Instructions

1. Conduct an interview with each girl to determine what key ingredients they would like included in their space.

2. Keep the room unified. Do not attempt to divide the room into two separate spaces with bulky furniture or makeshift dividers. Instead, give each girl a defined space within the larger area. Use colors which were chosen by each girl in their interview, to divide the space.

3. Think bold color for the main, shared area. Paint the walls one color that each girl can agree on. In their individual areas, build up the colors and a theme to match each girls interest.

4. Give each girl a space in the room to display their own photos, posters, knick knacks, and toys. Creating a space that they will feel comfortable in and like it's theirs will reinforce the idea that this room is for each of them.

5. Individualize a work desk in each girls space. In a shared room, it is important to encourage maximum focus tools for their studies. Because they are always going to be in the same space, distractions are going to be higher than in individual space.

6. Give the girls the tools to keep the room clutter free. Clean up will be a breeze if everything has a place. Use small, medium and large baskets to designate a home for every item.

Styles Of Dining Room Chairs

Leg and back details can help determine the style of dining room chair.

Next time you're looking for a conversation starter at a dinner party, you may be sitting on it. Don't be quick to overlook the story behind most dining room chairs. Each curve and carved detail of a dining room chair begs to tell of its origins, designer and beliefs behind its craftsmanship. Learn all you can about dining room chair styles to add interest to dinner conversations and to help you add style to your own home.

Shaker

Shaker style chairs were crafted in the late 1700s to the early 1900s by a religious group, primarily residing in New England, that called themselves Shakers. Believing that their work was a form of prayer, the Shakers took great care to make ornament-free furniture known for its simplicity and extreme durability. Shaker-style chairs have straight legs and are often called ladder-back chairs because of their characteristic group of three ladder rungs or "rails" on the chair backs.

Duncan Phyfe

Duncan Phyfe chairs, also known as Regency or Empire chairs, were popular from the late 18th century to the middle 19th century and are named after the famous cabinet maker Duncan Phyfe. Their legs are tapered to look like a cavalry saber (sword) and they typically have carved backs which scroll outward. Duncan Phyfe chairs have strong neoclassical appeal.

Queen Anne

Queen Anne chairs were made between 1700 and 1730 and are characterized for their vase-shaped splat or center back support. Queen Anne chairs are sometimes upholstered and often have curved cabriole legs with ball and claw feet.

Chippendale

Named after British cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale, Chippendale dining room chairs made their public debut in Chippendale's 1754 publication, "The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director." Similar to Queen Anne chairs, Chippendale chairs have more elaborate carving details and display evidence of Gothic, French and Chinese influence.

Windsor

Windsor chairs are named after the town of Windsor, Berkshire, England and were first manufactured in the late 1600s. They have a very simple appearance with bow or hoop backs. Spindles are their most notable characteristic and are driven into holes in the seat to form the back support.

Art Nouveau

The early 20th century brought fresh furniture designs including the sleeker silhouette of dining room chairs. Art Nouveau chairs vary widely in appearance but typically have upholstered backs and seats, intricately carved ornamentation and arm rests that curve outward.

Chic Bedroom Ideas

Above all, your bedroom should reflect your own personal style.

The bedroom should be more than just a place of escape and repose from the rest of the house; it should be a place where you feel the room reflects your own personal style. Chic decorative accents can turn your bedroom into a place you feel excited to relax in. Luckily, such accents don't need to cost a lot.

Revamp Your Bed

You can drastically transform your bed from an ordinary place of sleep and rest to a destination point in your room. Invest in a range of quality throw pillows that complement the decor of your room. For an ultra chic look, use pillows that come with a range of fabrics and textures. For example, silk and satin are standard throw pillow materials, but now manufacturers are creating pillows made of faux fur, leather, suede, corduroy, denim and velvet, with decorative additions like buttons, ruffles, bows, beads, and other ornamental items. Purchasing six or more pillows in a range of designs will give your bed an effortlessly chic look.

Walls

According to Carol Endler Strebenz and Genevieve Strebenz, authors of the book, "Faux Chic: Creating the Rich Look You Want for Less," the color of the bedroom walls is like the tone of voice. Soft colors like pastels are whispered, soft tones, whereas bright colors and daring patterns are like shouts for attention. You can create a richer sense of chic by painting the walls of your bedroom in stripes with painter's tape to give it the chic look of wallpaper. Alternatively, you can color wash the walls: this process refers to painting the walls with tinted glaze over a base color to give the walls a more intense look. You can control how intense the look is by how many coats of tined glaze you apply. Regardless, the technique helps to establish a sense of sophistication in the room.

Lamps

Lamps wield an enormous influence over the look of a room. For example, a near effortless way to achieve a sense of chic in a bedroom is by hanging a large chandelier in the middle of the bedroom. The chandelier can be classical, modern or even shabby chic; regardless, it will give the room an inherent sense of sophistication. Table or bedside lamps such as hand-painted ceramic ones or lamps with beaded shades help to complete the look.

1930s Hollywood Bedroom Furniture

A fainting couch adds authenticity and glamor to a 1930s Hollywood theme bedroom.

For a romantic, elegant bedroom, few decorating themes can top 1930s Hollywood. Also known as the Hollywood Regency decor, the style celebrates the glamor and sophistication of 1930s movie star homes. Furniture pieces display clean, simple lines and upholstery with sumptuous fabrics. When recreating a 1930s Hollywood bedroom, focus on a few key pieces which are a must for capturing the elegance and drama of the period.

Lacquered Bed Frame

To capture the glamorous feel of 1930s Hollywood, choosing the right bed frame can make all the difference. Black lacquer furniture is a staple in Hollywood Regency decorating, so a dramatic four-poster bed frame with a black lacquer finish adds an authentic touch to your bedroom. Opt for a frame that features a canopy for a romantic look or an upholstered headboard with quilted velvet or satin fabric for a more luxurious feel.

Dressing Table

Another furniture item that adds an air of authenticity to a 1930s Hollywood theme bedroom is a dressing table or vanity. It will evoke images of glamorous movie starlets like Fay Wray and Myrna Loy as they readied themselves for their close-ups and give your bedroom a luxurious, elegant feel. Opt for a black lacquered dressing table that matches your bed frame or a vanity with a mirrored finish to brighten the room. Decorate the table with vintage perfume bottles and a silver brush and mirror set to maintain the period feel.

Fainting Couch

If you plan to add a sitting area to your bedroom, a fainting couch can add the right touch of 1930s Hollywood glamor. A fainting couch is a small couch whose back is higher on one end than the other. As a result, it has only one arm and provides a simple, elegant look that is appropriate for a Hollywood Regency inspired bedroom. Look for a fainting couch upholstered with a luxurious velvet or satin fabric -- black or red fit the Hollywood theme well, but opt for any shade that coordinates with your bedroom's color palette. If you can't find a fainting couch that you like or fits your budget, a chaise lounge can provide a similar look.

Wing Chair

In a small bedroom that doesn't have room for a fainting couch or chaise lounge, use wing chairs to create a sitting area with authentic 1930s Hollywood flair. Wing chairs are upholstered easy chairs that feature distinct winglike sides along their back and armrests. Opt for chairs covered in velvet, satin or silk fabric for an elegant, refined look. Accessorize your chairs with large, patterned pillows in similar fabrics to add dimension to the room.

Decorate One Bedroom With Two Single Beds

Two beds in a bedroom cuts down on the open spaces.

Decorating a bedroom with two single beds is not complicated. Keep in mind the use of the room when deciding upon colors and decor styles. If the room is a guest bedroom or for the use of one occupant, the design of the room will vary then if the room has two occupants that share the bedroom area. Two beds in one normal-sized bedroom can visually decrease the size of the room, so it is important to use decor that will maximize the space.

Instructions

1. Use matching bedding for the single beds. This creates visual flow and prevents breaking up the space. Avoid monotony by having different coordinating throw pillows for each bed.

2. Place a nightstand in between the two beds. This allows for each person to make use of an alarm clock or reading lamp.

3. Position the beds as close to the nearest side wall as possible to allow extra walking space in the bedroom.

4. Paint the walls in a pale pastel or light neutral shade. Pale colors visually enlarge the area.

5. Use two different paint colors on the side walls of the room if you have siblings that need to express their individuality, but choose colors that complement, contrast or are in the same color family. Paint the wall behind the head of the beds -- the focal point of the room -- with vertical stripes. Form the stripes by placing masking tape on the wall to form stripes that are 6 inches in width. Paint the focal wall with one of the colors and paint the stripes the other color in the room. Remove the tape once the paint dries. This allows the individuals to have their own color choice and the stripes make the colors blend in a creative way.

6. Place an area rug in between the two beds that coordinates with the bedding and wall colors.

Decorate A Countrystyle Bedroom

Country bedrooms feature warm, soft elements with muted colors.

American country decorating style is all about down-to-earth comfort and warmth. The lines are simple, the colors are muted but rich and the decorating elements are sparse but comforting. If you want your bedroom to feel cozy without a lot of clutter, a country-style makeover is probably your best bet.

Instructions

1. Paint your furniture to match your new country style. Paint your bedframe French blue or warm cream. Coat chairs and dressers in rust reds, warm browns or buttery yellows. You may not need to paint wood furniture as long as it's real wood and not laminate.

2. Cover your bed in a large patchwork quilt. Find a quilt that hangs down to the floor to eliminate the need for a bed skirt. Cream-colored sheets and pillow shams complement the patchwork quilt without being too obviously country.

3. Scatter twined rugs over the floor. These rugs are made from fabric and twine; they're usually oval and come in rich, muted colors. Place one on either side of the bed, one in front of the door and one under each chair.

4. Fold and place country-style blankets over the backs of chairs. Place another on your footboard. Pin lightweight blankets to the walls for insulation and softness.

5. Decorate the tops of bureaus and windowsills with ceramic pieces and candles. Place a pitcher and bowl in a sunny window. Cluster a few candles on a ceramic plate and set it on your nightstand.

6. Replace gilt or metal picture frames with wooden or cast iron frames. Simply transfer your pictures and prints over to the new frames to make them country-style.

Be A Successful Dining Room Manager

Managing a dining room requires teamwork and determination to ensure a pleasurable dining experience.

Dining room managers oversee the day-to-day operation of restaurants and dining halls. They are present during peak serving times, help to ensure that diners have a pleasant dining experience and they troubleshoot any problems or complaints from patrons. Dining room managers are also responsible for estimating how much food the restaurant should have on hand, for generating reports to upper management, for overseeing cooks and servers and for performing administrative duties such as paying bills, payroll processing and employee scheduling.

Instructions

1. Make sure your employees understand the mission, vision and goals of your establishment. Have them repeat them periodically to keep everyone working together to meet the company's desired outcome and to create a good dining experience. Hire people who are excited about working in the food service industry and who share your work ethic.

2. Motivate food preparers and servers. Restaurants can be fast-paced and hectic at times. Giving incentives for meeting certain goals can motivate the staff to go the extra mile for the customers. Start each shift with a motivational or encouraging word for the employees.

3. Set a good example by completing your own tasks in a timely manner. Other managers, especially those who could help advance your career, want to see that you have initiative and the perseverance it takes to manage successfully. Doing so may increase your chances of getting a promotion.

4. Be available to talk with customers. For many companies, this may be a requirement of the dining room manager. Inquire about their meal and their service. Be sure to give them your name and be visible in the dining room throughout the shift.

5. Direct your staff, but also work together as a team. Show employees that you are a worker, too. Make sure you are sometimes seen doing the same jobs as the cooks and servers. Deliver an order to a table, help with cleaning the dining room or help prepare an order.

6. Maintain a professional manner at all times. If you encounter an angry customer, be flexible and level-headed as you work through the issue. Try to come to a reasonable compromise that is best for the customer and the restaurant without attracting the attention of other patrons.

7. Refresh your knowledge of the job regularly. Search online sites and trade publications to see if there are ways you can improve your restaurant processes or procedures.
